Interm reports came home today and all three of my kids in school had comments about having difficulties with being organized, losing things, forgetful behavior like that. They have all the items they should need to stay organized-- folders, pencil boxes, backpacks, etc. Here at home, the rule is do your homework at the table, get it checked, and back into the folder, into the backpack, and backpack on the hook by the front door. Their playrooms and bedrooms are "uber-organized" as my husband puts it with containers for each type of toy, labelled, and places on the shelves, and they do a good job keeping up with it. My oldest is a straight A+ TAG student and yet this organization thing continues to be a problem each year with him. Any advice on how to make it work?!?!? I'm thinking we need to start a reward/punishment system. I've always let this area be one of those "natural consequence" areas before (You know... you left your homework on the kitchen table? I'm sorry. There's no time to go back home. I guess you have to deal with the conseqences from your teacher." type stuff...)

Have you talked to the individual teachers about why they made these comments? I think that's what I would do to find out exactly what they mean. I say this because sometimes disorganization has more to do with how a kid responds verbally to instructions or just to the teacher than it does with how their things are arranged. Not saying that's what going on with your kids, but it might help to find out. BTW, some kids can just be shy and overwhelmed by answering a teacher and it can appear to be disorganization in their thoughts when really they're just intimidated by a teacher. This happened to one of my kids. Just something to think about.

I agree with Bzirk. Honestly, I don't know how a student who wasn't fairly organized could get straight A+ grades, so I am wondering if the teachers' expectations are unrealistic, or if they simply have nothing else to say that is negative and feel they have to put something there.

I know. My son is in 4th grade. His report card/progress reports have always had the "needs help with staying organized" box checked. Last year, his teacher and I had a running joke about the things that must live in the back of his desk behind all the mess. And he's never got below an A- in his grades... My 2nd grader and kindergartner are different stories... Special needs of various degrees and just no common sense. My 2nd grader would lose her nose still attached to her face...

I was the most disorganized kid whoever walked, and I graduated from k-12 with an 'A' average. I also had no problem in college, and I flew by the seat of my pants the first two years. When I finally got a real job and had to get organized to some degree, I did. BTW, I'm still not all that organized in my household. I HATE housework and just generally despise maintenance of any kind, but I do it somehow. If you looked at the bookshelves in my house or at my desk or at my dresser drawers, you would probably freak. Nevertheless, I've run three businesses successfully, homeschooled successfully, and run a number of volunteer programs successfully -- sometimes all at the same time. I guess I just don't put that much stock in a neat desk -- if the job is getting done.
