Hi I'm new here, but was wondering if anyone could help me out with a few questions. I know that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our works. But than Roman's 6:16 says "Don't you realize that whatever you choose to obey becomes your master?" I feel like I often go overboard with makeup and become a slave to it. But if I wear none, I become a slave to kind-of a "no makeup" religion. A friend of my quoted Galatians to me, "Oh, foolish Galatians! What magician has cast an evil spell on you? For you used to see the meaning of Jesus Christ's death as clearly as though I had shown you a signboard with a picture of Christ dying on the cross. Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by keeping the law?" Also, as a separate question, I know we are saved by grace, but do you think we have to earn God's respect in anyways? Perhaps by having faith?

Welcome 12357! You've got some good questions there, tho I wish you'd asked them separately so we could focus on each one without getting jumbled. I'm going to speak to one of them, tho. Makeup. Love it! Need it! Used it for about 44 years now. Jesus said: Matthew 6:16 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. I think the issue would be if we wore makeup to attract men other than our husbands.

I was going to try to answer your question about make-up but then I realized that I don't know what the question is. What is your question? I don't wear make-up but that is because I never think about it, not because of "no make-up religion". If you don't wear it then why would you be obsessing about it? If you like it why not just use it in moderation?

For us to earn God's respect would imply that God does not know us and our character. He knows us intimately, so we cannot make Him think differently about us.

We should be striving for more faith, more love, more patience, more boldness, and anything else we need to become more like Jesus.

About makeup - In all honesty, I've had problems with thoughts in my head telling me to "take it off", then the desire to put it on to cover my moles and problem areas.

Thank you for your answers about respect. I had a thought in my head telling me that "I need to earn his respect". But wouldn't that be like trying to earn God's favor?

We earn God's favor when we are covered by the blood of Jesus, forgiven! An adopted son or daughter in God's family. As for make-up there is nothing wrong with making ourselves look pretty. Just don't go overboard (I'm thinking of Tammy Faye Baker).

I guess that's o.k.. I've made far too big a deal out of makeup. The thing is, I have a pale face which makeup makes quite a difference on, so part of me feels like as a Christian, I shouldn't want to look that much better or something.

i think you're getting a bit obsessive over makeup. I wouldn't worry about it. If you want to wear it, then wear it. If not, then don't. I really don't think God cares if you wear it or not. I just wear undereye coverup and blush, that's it. I don't think my skin is that bad, so I save money by not buying the foundation. It's kinda nice not wearing it. And being a christian doesn't mean you look like a pig with dirty clothes and messed up hair. It means you look the best you can b/c you are representing Christ. does that help? quote:

I may be wrong but believe your friend quoted this to you, because you made a law for yourself with make-up. People make up laws and rules and sometimes follow them religiously. Which was Jesus complaint with the pharisees, they kept making laws that they didn't even follow. (Jesus died to fulfill the law and to live by them means to you His death is/was in vain.) I personally do not wear make-up ( maybe on occassion) however I look at it like a man who will grow facial hair, what are you trying to hide. You can not hide from God, He is the One who perfectly created you and He didn't use make up. Using it is not a sin, but why are you making it a law for yourself? BTW: God is not a respector of persons and having faith is a choice.

Thanks - your post helped clarify things. I have been making it a law for myself. But I'm just so afraid of loosing Christ, even though I feel that he has said to me "I will never leave you or forsake you". I don't believe he will really leave me, but what if I leave him in some way? Is the only way to leave him to deny him?

ORIGINAL: tw12357 but what if I leave him in some way? Is the only way to leave him to deny him? We have all strayed at some point in our life, but that is the great thing about the God we serve. He will always wait for you with open arm when you find your way back. (See the story of the Prodigal son, it gives you the best example of your fear.) Maybe you should read some more or have a study with some friends. Peter denied Jesus 3 times even after he said he would not! Imagine how he must of felt when Jesus was walking across the yard looking at him. But..... the Lord forgave Peter. See the Lord knows your heart and desires. Do not let a little issue of make-up hinder you. If it bother you than *you can change it. There is a prayer that has been around for eons called the Serenity prayer. Think about it: God grant me the Serenity to *accept* the things I 'can not' change and the *courage* to change the things 'I' can, and the Wisdom to know the difference. He always remember His promises are true, "He will never leave or forsake you' hope that helps you
