Cool ez, I bookmarked the adorama.com site. I haven't really decided what I'll do yet, but I do know I need some extra padding in there.

Say a prayer for self discipline before you go shopping on Adorama's web site. It can be very dangerous to your credit card! The only place I've found that's better is B&H Video, but they tend to be a little higher pried.

Watch me smile for a few days/weeks maybe- I drove by the barn that burned and it is scorched but the exterior is that tin stuff and it is still more or less standing. I figure the interior wood and the roof rafters are well toasted. A stiff breeze may do it in and the fire marshal may have it condemed and call for it to be bull dozed. BUT for now... it remains. i sure hope the kids don't climb on the shed roof to paint though. It may certainly fall.

ANYWAY there are a few more chances for photos. I imagine the kids will give a few more pretties if they start talking about bull dozing it too.

My local camera store has a big sale in February. I have bought bags and lens pouches at good prices there.

*bump*

I never come in this folder, I completely forgot there was a photography thread!!

I have been having tons of fun with my Rebel, I have been doing pictures for lots of friends and family and even a few paying customers now, it's so exciting!

I have a question about black and white photography, how do you decide which pictures should be in black and white? I rarely do any pictures in black and white because I can never decide which ones look best without colour.

Just about anything that isn't totally dependent on color works in B&W. By that I mean shots of flowers or fall colors won't do too well in B&W, but most anything else will. Especially high contrast scenes and scenes with long shadows.

If you have Photoshop or a similar program you can take any of your photos and change them to "grayscale" to see what they would look like in B&W.

hello, i have been shooting with a DSLR since december 2005. it has been very fun learning and taking some great shots. i was kinda surprised i didnt see any threads on photography...i had to do a search for this one.

anyways, i use a canon 30d, and i have six lenses with that. lately i have been using only 3 of them, though. i like taking pics of people mostly, they are the most interesting and unique subjects. candids are a lot of fun! i also shoot photos for my church, documenting certain events or services, and shooting photos for them to use in powerpoint. my church has its own flickr page that me and few other people upload to.

Hi folks, I really like flickr but Yahoo is going through business stuff and I am waiting for the dust to settle before upgrading to a subscription so I can make more groups.

IN the meantime, what are some good alternatives? My sis sells her work on Photoreflect. I haven't opened a page there yet.

Hi techno-

I will gladly accept the gift of the lenses you do not use I think I am about the only other canon user in the place here. No wait- BeckeyZ has an XTi like mine. I guess I will share with her. I also am the "unofficial" official church photographer. I do all of the baptismals, baby dedications, and other event that we have. a Fave is Vacation Bible School. Baptismals are challenging because of the hole they have the baptismal in. all this nasty dark honey wood above and on the sides. The stuff just seems to SUCK the light right out of my flash.

My use a EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM as my walk around most everything lens. I rarely use the kit lens. I also have a EF 50mm f/1.8 II (Nifty fifty) the cheaper version of the lens- not the f/1.4. I really like using it on my dSLR- it is closer to a 80mm with the conversion and all. It makes a soft pretty up close portrait- I like this bunch I did of my 15yo in her fave hat outside at sunset. The DOF being so thin gives it a soft focus that feels very intimate and sweet to me. This is not a lens to try to nab candids with.

-------------------------

Tooney- Lemme know what you hear about Yahoo/flickr.

ezri, those are some nice shots of your daughter. i used to have the 50mm f1.4, but i didnt use it much and i sold it to a friend. the lenses i dont use so much are my 100mm f2.8 macro and 85mm f1.8. i probably use my 35mm f1.4 L mostly, and lately i have been using my new 135mm f2 L. my only zoom, the 17-55mm f2.8 IS, has also gotten some use lately. i usually shoot candids with my 35L, even at f1.4. it is tough to get the focus right, since the dof is so narrow though. but when i can get it spot-on it is wonderful. i also shoot in low light often, so the wide apertures are great - i rarely use a flash.

anyways, if you want to check some of my photos, here's my flickr page:

your nifty lens will capture nice candids if the aperture is high enough.

Matt,

100mm f2.8 macro Drools... macro... Ooooo LOVE! and my rose garden is about to BUST with blossoms!

Loved the photos- I will have to get back out that way again- I only made it through the first 6 pages. That one of the top of the parking garage made me dizzy just looking at it.

Mrsdash

I have found with my fifty that I go too soft on candids with the wide aperture. I like it close in. the further I get out, and the more people in the shot, the harder it is to get the focus just right- especially on moving targets. Then you lose the whole shot because everyone looks like they are in a fantasy fog. *shrugs* i guess that would be great if that was my aim.

the fifty is a dream close up, true. but close it down to at least 5.6 better 7 or better, and you can get shots of everything everyone in focus. different type of shooting for sure, but at times it's handy when wanting to shoot different types of shots with one lens.

Ezri, when i first got my nifty i looked through pages of this:

http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=50mm&m=discuss&s=int

it expanded my concept of what the lens could do. i should probably peruse it again.

Some very nice stuff there McBain. Isn't it nice to be able to experiment with angles and odd composition, etc?

McBain was doing awesome stuff with a Point and Shoot- the dSLR has only given him more Pixels to do it with.

I just spent 30 minutes looking through the 50mm stuff at Flickr. Lots of cool stuff there. I have been shooting the 50mm on my Pentax. I need to bring my book home and scan some of my stuff I have printed in the lab at the college.

We went to a Sculpture garden this past weekend and I was so overwhelmed at the sheer number of cool things to snap that i limited myself to 3 shots of each cool thing. I shot almost 5 rolls of film. I now know what I LOVE and want to go back to run through film like water and Memory cards just as fast. BUT I had a mission this past weekend. I needed two reflections and two shadows. One of my faves of those was called "The Fall of France"

Hi all! Hope you don't mind me joining you - I'm a certified photo nut, although most of my pictures are of my daughter. I have taken some shots of birds and plants in my yard lately and really enjoy that as well. I use Paint Shop Pro 9 to play around with different effects - and I use Photobucket to store my photos so I can share them with my friends and family. I have two digital cameras - one is a Sony Cybershot; the other is a Canon Rebel XT. So far, I just have the lens that came with my Canon; I'd love to have a different lens for it someday, but for now, I'm content with what I have. This picture is one I'm really proud of - it's of my daughter and her horse, Copper. I played around with settings to get the effect I wanted.

edited for typos

Great picture, tx. There seems like there is some blueish gray in her face and front side, though. I think it might look better to brighten it up, just a tad, with a little color.

Melissa,

do you have more than one computer? if you do check the photo out on the other one. the color changes from one monitor to the next and so on. Most of mine had a orange hue to them til i got a monitor calibrator and started checking it monthly. Of course if you had the money for the calibrator and were anything like me you'd spend it on a lens.

I did not get the calibrator until I started looking at the possibility of my actually selling photos happening weather I wanted to or not. Friends have a way of pressing me into service for family photos and portraits. Now that are insisting on paying me to do it. It is scary and neat all in the same breath.

Ezri,
I only have one computer that can go online, although I do have a portable hard drive that would let me view the pic (as well as future pictures) on 2 other monitors. I may think about doing so.

I am like you in that I would spend the money on a lens if I had it. I am to the point of thinking of asking for one as my next year's Christmas gift.

I do often put photos onto CDs and take them to be printed to see which color variation I like best... it's been a really interesting experiment, especially when I share them with friends and strangers alike and get their feedback. I hope someday to be at the point where folks offer to pay me for my work or to do photography for them. Congratulations - and good luck in your endeavors - let me know how they turn out!!
