Wow, do I ever relate. This sounds so familiar to me.
One thing that has really amazed me is how God really will step in and take care of things like this. Usually not on my time table, but He will. And the times when I've remembered to include the child in taking the issue before God, then that child has seen God work and grown in their faith, too.
Here are some things I think I might try if I were in your situation.
1) Go directly to the teacher. Tell him the issue and that he is about to lose a student if something can't be worked out. Ask if the Thing can maybe be a "helper" in some way, for instance, so that he has a service to do that gives him some encouragement and takes care of the boredom for the time being.
2) Definitely pray about this specific problem with Thing 2. Daily, if necessary. Make it a team effort to search the scriptures for possible solutions. If he sees YOU relying on scripture for answers, he'll more likely use that method as he matures. And learning to find the answer in God is a skill set that we often do not teach our children--so here's your opportunity.
3) Remind Thing 2 that God is his Daddy. He can ask God to do for him or give him anything he'd ask an earthly father to do or give. So encourage him to take his relationship with God very personally and just see what God does with that! You'll likely be very amazed!

Thank you John and Grace-N-Mercy. I appreciate your prayers. I just turned in the paper - hopefully my professor will accept it since it was due on midnight (actually it was due on Wednesday but he gave me an extension). I prayed for you Grace-N-Mercy - I don't know if you are still up.

I'm in the middle of an extended fast, and yesterday had self defense training, so I'm really hurting today. Please pray that I feel better to be able to do today what needs done at work.

Please lift Gloria up in prayer. I just got word that she is in an induced coma after having given birth - a very difficult delivery. During the birth, her doctor discovered a hole in her liver. She is losing an incredible amount of blood and they are unable to operate or close her up until she stops bleeding. She is in critical condition.

I am meeting with a pain management specialist/micro surgeon Thursday. It can't come soon enough. Right now even the narcotics aren't touching the pain radiating from my back into my legs. Please be praying for wisdom for me and the doctor, that I will be able to convince the doctor that this is effecting my life and keeping me from really living it and that my family and boyfriend will accept any decisions I make relating to this.
Praying for everyones requests.

Request:
Due to finances, our school district might have to shorten our school year. Of course, the kids would love it, it would save the district money, however for employees it will cut our income. We should know the whole story for sure within the next week. Please pray, I don't believe that it is good for the students to miss those important instruction days, and there are many in the same position as I am & cannot afford such a cut in pay.
I know that the Lord already knows what is happening and has already begun a plan for me... but it does tend to make me rather nervous.

tlims, I will pray for you and all involved. I have substitute taught on and off for years and I truly understand that teachers are already underpaid! To worry about a pay cut would be so stressful. Please let us know how it all turns out.

The pain has gotten very bad. I'm working on filing the paper work to have the option of medical leave. I can take intermittent leave so when the pain is under control I can work but when the pain is more than I can take I can be off work without risking my job. Please be praying that the pain will lift long enough for me to finish my shift today and that the doctor will be willing to sign the paper work for my FMLA.

He asked me what was wrong and I told him I was just stressed about it. So when he said his prayers tonight he prayed, "Mummy and I will learn more about you and that she won't be so stressed because we know you already have this taken care of for us. And if you want me to help with the class that you tell my teacher it's okay." *tear* 
I just got it turned in a little bit ago, but I see he hasn't graded our discussion posts and he knew about my situation, so I feel pretty good that if I lose any points, it'll only be 5.
