Both of my older daughters are woodwind players, and I have encouraged them to parrot the sounds they hear on several albums we have: Ellington's greatest hits, Glenn Miller, etc. They are having a blast. If they never play anything serious, I don't care. They really like the blues and swing of these big band pieces. When they started, they thought, 'Oh, it will be years before I can play anything like that." Well, if you go the traditional route, I guess that's true. If you just have a strong desire to play and you listen to it really well and practice, it's amazing what you can play. That's how I started playing people like Brubeck and George Shering. If I had waited until I was "ready," I would have probably NEVER played that kind of stuff.

Yes, that's the children's verse, but Mairzy Doats was actually the name of the popular song.

LOL!! Thanks for posting that.

BTW, that song has always irritated me. It's like The Song That Never Ends.

This makes me think of a speech class I took in college -- voice and diction. The first day of class the teacher wanted to make a point about our lazy speech patterns, so he put this on the board:

"Gee chet?"

"Nuh."

"Esqueet."

Translation:

"Have you eaten yet?"

"No"

"Then let's go eat."

If I may pretend to have any eloquence, it goes out the window when I open my mouth to speak. The ragin' cajun ain't got nuthin' on me. I have the thickest, hickiest accent, and it's A LOT better than it used to be (I attribute the improvement to working with a bunch of Yankees for years on end. ). So I needed this class desperately. It certainly didn't solve the problem, but it did help.

Martin,

I love swing, so I can't help but like big band. I got to see Bob Crosby's orchestra when I was a kid and got to meet him too. I would have LOVED to hear Duke Ellington live.

yeah our whole family loved to swing. My mother and father used to win contests. :) And my aunt used to dance on table tops when she got going, it was the rage. Clean fun too. They nicknamed her Jiggaboo! She's gone now or she'd whack me one for telling. hehe

This teacher also told us how screwed up the English language was by spelling G.B. Shaw's version of the word fish --- ghoti. Gh as in rough, o as in women, and ti as in nation.

that's just downright wierd. Hawaiian is very straightforward. We pronounce all the vowels and pronounce them the same every time except for an ocassional slight slurring of two together. And we pronounce all the consonants. A is ah. I is eee. O is oh. E is long a. U is a u. simple, eh. If you get frustrated with English , just move to Hawaii.

Around here, it's Gullah (or geeche) and it's easily catching...pretty soon, don nobody know what you're saying...

It's even hard to write...but here's a title of real book by the American Bible Society. De Good Nyews Bout Jedus Christ Wa Luke Write: The Gospel According to Luke in Gullah Sea Island Creole with Marginal Text of the King James Version

On a different note (and IMO much funnier note ), the following is something we passed around every so often during the 15 years I worked in the hotel industry and this is probably the funniest thing I ever read: (it is NOT meant to be offensive, but a humorous comparison of language.) You gotta read it out loud! LOL

Room Service (RS): "Morny, Ruin Sorbees."
Guest (G): "Sorry, I thought I dialed Room Service."
RS: Rye...Ruinsorbees...morny! Djuwish to odor sunteen?
G: Un...Yes...I'd like some bacon and eggs.
RS: Ow july den?
G: What?
RS: Ow july den?...pry, boy, pooch?
G: Oh, the eggs! How do I like them? Sorry, scrambled please.
RS: Ow july dee baychem...crease?
G: Crisp will be fine.
RS: Hokay. An san toes?
G: I don't think so.
RS: No? Judo one toes??
G: I feel really bad about this, but I don't know what "judo one toes"
means.
RS: Toes! Toes!...Why djuw don juan toes? Ow bow inglish moppig we
bother?
G: English muffin!! I've got it! You were saying "Toast!" Fine.
Yes an english muffin will be fine.
RS: We bother?
G: No...just put the bother on the side.
RS: Wad?
G: I mean butter...just put it on the side.
RS: Copy?
G: Sorry?
RS: Copy...Tea...Mill?
G: Yes, coffee please and that's all.
RS: One minnie. Ass ruin torino fee, strangle ache, crease baychem,
tossy inglish moppig we bother honey sign, and copy...rye??
G: Whatever you say.
RS: Tenjuberrymud.
G: You're welcome.

ROFLOL!!

I wish I could find the story I have on the guy who complains about having no soap in his hotel room. No matter how many times I read that, I still get sick laughing. If I find it, I'll send it to you.

Baseball, yeah!!! Who's on first? What's on second?

My only claim to fame is I got the see the Basie band (with the Count) in Honolulu once. They were great!!! I have a CD (my folks have the records, remember them?) of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross putting lyrics to and singing some Basie Tunes. Sing a Song of Basie. I love it.

Here in Hawaii, I have a copy of the New Testament transalated into Pidgin. It's........different. And there was a local comic (definitely NOT a christian) who recorded a bit called "Room Service" where some tourist is trying to order food. For those who understand pidgin, it's hilarious.

The Old Buzzards Thread? Well, it takes one to know one

BTW, mabel, I think BIG guys skating around with sticks trying to hit a little rubber puck, is WAY more dangerous than baseball

LOL---is only dangerous if they catch you!

All I know is when I stand out in center field (yawn) swatting at skeeters and knats I'm thinking "If I was playing hockey right now I'd be moving"!

BTW, ye old timers here, how old does something have to be before it is an antique? 50 years, 75 years, 100 years?

If it is 50 .......

Just how far is the vintage stage from vinegar?

I ask because some of you seem closer than others to reaching that next level of maturity.
