OK, here's a substitute for the food threads, only today we are featuring Hawaiian foods, er foods eaten in Hawaii

Ah, poke. I think Trishy explained it pretty well. Now that is a Hawaiian food, the sashimi we were speaking about earlier is more Oriental, or I guess Japanese. The Japanese don't have a lot of cattle on their islands, so they eat a lot of fish. And tofu. Which contains a lot of plant estrogen for you female types.......

Breakfast in Hawaii - Portuguese sausage and eggs. Or chicken (we eat the losers, whoops don't know if I should say that ). Rice, always rice. Brown or white, with shoyu and ume (Trishy, you eat ume?) French toast Hawaiian style with Portuguese sweet bread and lilikoi jam. Or there's all kinds of Chinese, Filipino, Korean (spicy hot) even haole (usually caucasian) foods too!

Fruits, do we have fruits. Mango, lilikoi, guava, pineapple, mountain apple, starfruit, local strawberries, poha, ah the list goes on.....And for you vegetarian types, Hawaiians eat a lot of poi (well, so of us do) made with taro. Babies fed a lot of poi are well nourished

I know I'm forgetting a lot, will try to remember so more later......

Enough already! I didn't have breakfast with my coffee and now it's midafternoon and I haven't had lunch! The fruit sounds delicious. The other delicacies (sp?) well - on my Hawaiian vacation, you'll have to entice me...

YEAH!!! I just completed taking my test, checking it multiple times, and sending it in. I feel somewhat freer. I have a final comprehensive exam to take as soon as they'll let me and then I'll be truly excited!

Thank you for praying for me!!

ROFLOL! Too funny! Hey, I'm really hungry too right now. How about this then, why doesn't everyone just say a little something about the cuisine in their neck of the woods? How does that sound?

Randy, yes I eat ume. My uncle from Japan sends us the real good kind- meaty, some with less salt, some with honey. They don't have that kind here and it's really expensive.

((((((((((((((((PRUNED)))))))))))))))) Woo hoo! I know what's it's like to finish an exam. Now will this exam be beneficial at your present job or are you planning to get into something else? I'm so excited for you and all this food too. I think I'll jump in the water now. Wanna join me anyone?

BTW, Trish, be sure to bo back one page. I did respond to your previous post I myself often forget to go back because this new forum doesn't leave you where you left off automatically.

Don't know that I could bring myself to have tofu. I like most vegies though. I'm already on vitamin supplements, as I can't eat all the things that I should be having, due to the surgery I had last year. I'll eat chicken and pork as much as I can though, along with the vegies.

Good morning Lori and everyone

My weekend was pretty good. I went to a Juice Plus information session. It was pretty good and I like the product.

How is everyone doing today?

Good Trishy!
Juice Plus is in OK too.
My friend loves their juices and is always talking about the products.
Are you still thinking of selling it?

Can I pick up a couple of pounds of macadamia nuts while I'm here?
That pineapple was delectable!

Have a great day in the Lord Trishy!
Lori

I'm planning on buying the capsules in both the veggies and the fruits. It's a great supplement- all natural fruits and veggies, especially cause most Americans don't eat enough it on a daily basis. I don't think I will be selling it though- not right now. You know, I was watching Good Eats on the food network one day and there was a show on herbs and one on spices. I thought about it and I am facinated by it. To think how God made these specific herbs and spices all too flavor food. Isn't that awesome? I mean, it's so common that we don't really think about it. But I am trying to see if anyone in Hawaii has a class on herbs and spices. I may explore it and see what kinds of blends I can come up with. It's certainly not something new or uncommon; but when you think of it in a way that just facinates you, who knows what kinds of blends you can come up with.

Hi Ms.O! Glad you came!

Do you live in Hamakua Coast? I know it's always rainy there. I stayed in Honokaa for about 10 weeks a few year ago. Hey that's a cool smiley! Would you like some condensed milk with that shave ice? Man, I know it's going to be a hot summer. It's already 89 degrees here and it's still Spring.

To you too Lori I's looooove to take a swim right now but unfortunately I have to go and look for a futon bed right now. I am moving into my new studio and am going to see if a futon bed is comfortable enough to sleep on everyday. If not, I'm going to shoot for a day bed. I want to have a "couch look" since I don't have bedroom.

Everyone else, please feel free to fellowship on the island even when I am away. I'll leave some garlic/onion macadamia nuts and some shave ice for everyone while I'm gone. Just save a little for me when I get back!

Just checking in before I check out and head for bed. You asked to talk about food in my part of the country? Tonight, at Bible study, one of the women brought the freshest, best tasting sweet firm strawberries you would ever want...Oh, my...I guess the reason we like them so much is that they really are a seasonal fruit and we'd get bored with them if they were available year 'round, but my mouth is still watering...

Some farmers have tried "pick your own" garden plots. Picking a ripe strawberry right off the vine and savoring it on the spot is as good as it gets, isn't it?

Hiya pruned!
Oh my.... Being able to eat a strawberry on the spot when you pick it? Must be sweet! You know, only recently we have gotten decent seasonal strawberries here in Hawaii. Costco has those big ones come in every year. Before Costco and the similar stores came here, I can't ever remember eating too much strawberries. I always thought I didn't care for them too much (fresh) because my experience with them has always been on the tart side. Now I know that they CAN be sweet.

How are you doing today pruned?

Trishy

Mornin/evenin everyone

Well, it's Tuesday and it's time to get the week rollin! It was my boss's b-day yesterday and we went to lunch- Japanese food. I did go do my futon bed searching last night and ended up buying a regular bed. It's way more comfy and better for the back and I am just going to try to make the bed look like a couch. Any ideas? It will be against the wall sideways and I plan to put big pillows on it near the wall. If there's room on the side. Maybe a small side table (those round ones maybe?) on both sides and it will look pretty close to a couch. Hmmm.

I also have a prayer request. My parents, especially my dad is really stressed out and gets easily impatient. There's a story behind it but let me just say that being the only Christian in the family (I am the only child) makes it hard sometimes. My parents need the Lord. The best that I can do is talk to them occassionally about things, help out when I can (like when I have dinner with them), and ofcourse, pray all the time. I have learned quickly that it's difficult to reach out to your own family. Perhaps I should pray also that the Lord brings in some faithful Christians to reach out to them.

Will be praying, Trishy. I have similar issues with my folks and my wifes parents. Buddist on on side and way out in left field on my side. Family should be easy to minister to, but, like you say, often is very difficult.

Have a blessed day. (should have bought the futon )

Thanks Randy for your prayers

I was surprized by the futon beds. They have nice designs but the mattress typically have no coils in them. The last thing I want is a stiff back. I would get one if I had a bedroom and use the futon sofa for guests. But for everyday use? Not recommended.

Wow. So both of your parents on your side and your wife's side are not Christians huh. That's tough.

Trishy

'Sigh'. I can't find anyone in Hawaii who is teaching a class on herbs and spices. Maybe the neighbor islands?

Yes, not too far from Honokaa. Actually, I love it where I live...it's a good mix of rain and sun...I grew up in Oregon, so rain really doesn't bother me that much...HA! Check out the pics of my house.....

Try some natural food stores in your area, they many know of someone who does this. What kind of teaching do you mean....how to grow them or how to use them?

Good Evening!

Yes, strawberries on the spot are sweet. But you'll have a vastly different experience when picking a gooseberry and doing the same thing! LOL!! Gooseberries are also ripe for the picking around here.

Oh - and another seasonal (spring) regional delicacy which some have enjoyed, but I haven't had in years is morel mushrooms. Grab a bucket or Wal-Mart shopping bag, trek out in the woods where it's marshy, when the temperature has been cool, there's been a recent rain and then the temperature spikes up to the 60s and happy hunting! Once they're cleaned and soaked in salt water, batter pan fried and served hot .... mmmm.

Someone told me this year his mother served him something he thought was mushrooms - and they turned out to be dandelion flowers!
