I know there are a few voice teachers here, and every now and then I throw a question out there to see if there are tips or advice. It is weird to have a better ear for music than my voice can reproduce. It's incredibly annoying, but better than the reverse, I suppose. Anyhow, I've been noticing something in my voice that I'm not quite sure how to get rid of. When I am going from a low note to a higher note (like the first "night" in "O Holy Night"), I often start slightly flat on the higher note and sliding into the center of the pitch. I have figured out that if I make a clean cut between the notes, completely stopping vocalizing after (say) "holy" and starting fresh with "night," I'm less likely to flat "night." I've heard other untrained singers—and even a few trained ones—do this from time to time. Any ideas on how to avoid it?

The way my voice teacher taught us was to visualize the note. Instead of thinking going up to it from the bottom, think going over the top to land on it.

Eating lemon is bad for your throat! The only time you need to use and excess amount of lemon is when you have mucus build up. The acidity in the lemon is not good for singing, especially in heavy amounts.

It will make your vocal chords raw. The only time I ever use a lot of lemon or lemon juice is when I have mucus build up and need to be able to sing. I pair it with honey though to help soothe.

Had a judge at a talent contest tell me, "You have perfect pitch, a half second into the note." I am very bad about sliding into the correct pitch. I know instantly if I'm off but I have a hard time internally visualizing exactly where to start some times. And yes, Daniel, it does happen most often when there is a significant gap to a higher note.

Daniel, In a demonstration about how to avoid sliding up to a pitch, my choir director in college would set a chair at the front of the room. He'd place his foot on the seat of the chair and say something to the effect that you have to visualize your voice coming from the top of the note to hit it correctly. If you think about coming up to it from below, then you'll go flat and maybe slide up to it. Then, he would reitorate try to put his foot on the seat again, but this time by bringing his foot underneath the chair, causing the chair to flip over. "You won't hit the pitch if you come from underneath." Strangely enough singing (correctly) is a largely visual process. That's why in choirs it helps for the choir leader to be a conductor, giving you hand signals that tell you when to get louder or softer or whatever. I use the same thing mentally when I sing. Sometimes when I practice I do my own gestures that help me even more. Another means of getting the pitch is a lot of breath support. You have to give your whole singing/breathing appartus a boost to move from the lower note to the higher note. Without appropriate breath support you will almost without exception go flat. (This is also very important when hitting notes in the upper portion of your range.)

May sound funny, but raise your eyebrows when you sing. It really helps with tone and to offset notes that are flat.

Funny that whoever seems to be teaching you that we all get different answers. That bothers me because some are getting great tips and some are getting wives tales. Who is to know what is right and what is wrong? I was taught that breathing is very important, but that it takes no more breath to hit a note correctly than it takes to talk normal. You shouldn't slide into a note, but I was taught to "flip" from your natural range into a head tone to nail the note. This takes no more breath than hitting a normal note. I learned this through the Brett Manning's Singing Success CD set. It is great if you enjoy listening to instruction by CD...was a little boring for me. I like hands on instruction. An example of flipping would be Arthur Rice. He hits notes in the tenor range and his expression barely changes.
