These people at PETA have obviously never used a breast pump before. I cannot imagine pumping extra to sell to give/sell to produce ice cream. I know some women have a overflow; lucky them, but I never did.

I have heard it said that the quality of the milk can be affected by the emotional state of the cow. They have tried such things as soothing music, etc to make the cows happier.

I wonder if it matters what women listen to. How would the milk be affected if they are listening to, let's say, The View as opposed to Rush Limbaugh?

Yuck!!!

I'd rather listen to Rush than a bunch of cackling hens. *shudders*

I cannot even begin to fathom the thought of a bunch of lactating women locked in a room hooked up to a machine.

And you know they wouldn't use American or European women...they'd build sweatshops across already poverty stricken areas.

Also...don't you have to have given birth recently in order to lactate? I mean, the last time I gave birth was almost 9 years ago...I think I'm not quite in the nourishing state.

It'd be another American industry outsourced.

Actually I think increased demand would lead to mass production bringing the price down.

Can you imagine what the "mama dairies" would be like? Would they use machines similar to those used on cows, I wonder? Would they work an 8 hour shift? Would they unionize? I wonder?

I wonder if this is some sort of stunt by PETA for people to start thinking along those lines. If people think it would be awful to treat women like that, then it must be awful to treat cows like that, too. That sort of thing.

Nope. It's a lot easier if you've just given birth, but women who've never been pregnant or not for a long time can lactate. It's a pain in the, uh, chest to do it though. And women who nurse or pump frequently can keep it going for years at a time.
The human body is pretty amazing.

However, the fact remains that it is a stupid idea.

The latest PETA stunt in our area was two naked young women "taking a shower" in a downtown square to encourage people to shower instead of doing some other environment killing something which I can't remember. I was kind of distracted by the thought that those silly girls were putting themselves out there like that. The newspaper photo showed them barely covered by a "modesty" panel, surrounded by leering males with their cameraphones clicking away.

I often wonder what solar system some people hail from. This is probably one of the most disgusting ideas I've heard in a very long time.

All I can say is that for all of its hippie credentials, even Ben & Jerry's still got some common sense to say female breast milk (for ice cream) is by far the stupidest thing ever conceived... no (thematic) pun intended

But as for the women in the milk-pumping imagery... the whole notion of having feminists and PETA squaring off seems all too familiar...

*hint: Michael Vick, or the whole nonsense when PETA (or its like-minded ilk) made racist, anti-Japanese cartoons over reinstated whaling policies, and yeah; when PETA likened caged elephants to antebellum-era slavery!

Consecrated2God - that was the first thing I thought when I started reading this thread. It seems to me that the whole point is to come up with something so outrageous (although it is actually being done in one restaurant in Switzerland - don't want to eat there ...) that it gets us to start talking (like the women in the shower in the middle of the city). Would we even be talking about PETA at length here if it weren't for this? My hunch is they don't actually want to use breast milk in ice cream, but rather for us to think about what happens to cows in the dairy industry - because they know that if they simply said - cows are being forcefully impregnated every nine months to maintain milk production (at least this is what their materials say) - very few people would care or listen. My guess is that they want us to put ourselves in the animal's place - they obviously do - so that we think about this every time we buy ice cream - and perhaps we might decide not to buy it.

I think it would be a lot more cruel to force the cows to get jobs to support themselves and pay rent and clean their own houses. I don't think they would really want to be treated as equally as humans.

NO, way at all, I do not have time to read all replies, and someone may have suggested this, but what safety measures are in effect for using breast milk? many things such as Aids can be passed through breast milk, and medications.

Absolutely not. But PETA sickens me even more than this idea. I fully agree with free speech but if I had to construct an argument against it PETA would be the featured example of the downside of free speech.

PETA has succeeded in one thing. If I was about to collide with a moose or a PETA person I'd swerve to miss the moose so we're in agreement there.

That was a joke. Human life is always worth much more than moose, even PETA members.

BTW: this is directed at radical PETA members only, I have no problem with animal lovers, vegans or otherwise. Its PETA's methods that disgust me, not their wanting to "humanize" animals (thats just goofy).
