I don't think anyone needs to imitate them. I wouldn't do a lot of things the way they do, either. But I don't find it necessary to make fun of their hairstyle of their clothing choices or any of those things. They don't disturb me. I guess I'm in the middle on the whole Duggar thing. It bothers me when they are placed on a pedestal of some sort of perfect example of God would have us all live, but it equally bothers me when Christians make such mean-spirited remarks about them. They are only trying to raise their family how they feel God would want them to, just like you and me.

This thought has crossed my mind a few times when seeing this family and others like them. It reminds me of those who think that if they follow all the rules and do good nothing bad will ever happen to them and that's just not how life works.

I'm not at all judging them and I like that they seem to give God total control of their family size because I think many of us have/are missing out, but that's just me.

Do they get paid for tdoing the show? I'm sure they could use the money.

Well, Lisa, I've cracked a few jokes about them, but to me, I don't see that as mean spirited. There are some aspects of Duggar life that are downright humorous, and they have placed themselves out there for all the world to see.

I honestly don't "care" about them one way or the other, but in my family it's natural to give each other little jibes every once and a while. That might be seen as mean by some.

I want to be clear that I am not making fun of the Duggars. But I do have serious concerns about how their family will play out on a reality show. I'm not sure what their motive has been in the past, to do the special shows about their family, but I believe "the world" mostly sees them as "weird," not admirable.

Just because someone "puts themselves out there" doesn't mean it's not mean to call them freaks, etc. I don't know if you necessarily have said anything mean, but I've read a lot of remarks that from a lot of people that collectively seem very mean-spirited. I don't understand the animosity I've seen people exhibit towards that family.

What is it that concerns you, and for whom are you concerned? Are you concerned for their children, that they won't grow up right? Are you concerned that they will portray Christians in a negative light?

(Those are stars!)

Next Duggar thread, maybe I'll post a catch-all of all the complaints and accusations against them, and then we can just get that over it.
Too many kids
arrogant and "holier than thou"
bad hair
stupid clothes
robotic kids
their children work (God help them, poor dears!)
the girls are oppressed and the boys are favored and catered to
What else? I'm sure I've missed some.

All that.

I already spend too much time trying to convince non-Christians that Christians are not ___ (fill in the blank).

When it comes to those kinds of issues, I figure God can defend His own reputation.

And I think God puts people in our lives so that we can help them understand what we believe and counteract the hypocrisy they have observed.

I don't think the Duggars are hypocrites. They certainly seem to live out what they believe.

I don't think a family that does things in a way that we may deem strange hurts Christianity or makes it difficult to witness to people. If anyone mistakenly thinks that all Christians are like the Duggars, all they need to do is meet a Christian who isn't like the Duggars and they'll know they were mistaken. All you have to do is explain that certain people believe different things about what the Bible says.

You're correct. On the other hand, it works both ways. These are public shows and they have placed themselves in the public eye so I think it is perfectly acceptible to discuss what we see that we like and what we see that causes us concern or makes us wonder if there is cause for concern. They are presenting how they think things should operate and we have a right to say how we think things should operate. Whether it is merely a fact of editing or whether it is how the family truly wants to be presented (to be honest, I can't comprehend why they would keep doing shows if they are unhappy with how TLC is presenting their family though), how they are being portrayed does lead to some discussion on how we as believers should or shouldn't act.

My problem is that it makes it hard to have a discussion when unless you are singing their praises, you are accused of demonizing them and having all kinds of evil intent in your posts. Look at what happened with the whole happy face thing. Not one person here said that we thought that family was in misery and such, just that we had concerns that all the portrayals of them showed a family with no conflict and everyone down to the 2 year old was just perfect. Like it or not and no matter which side you agree with, that is a legitimate discussion point. It gets old to have to be constantly trying to defend my posts against folks who read into them what was never written and it's a great killer of what could be a good discussion.

The posters who are really being outrageous are few and far between, so can we just get over that and have an actual discussion without demonizing anyone and reading into their posts what simply isn't there just because they see things a little different that we do?

In this case, I can only speak to what the people I spend time with think/believe about Christians.

In general, they think Christians are hypocrites.

Specifically speaking about the Duggars, they think they're weird.

They don't necessarily put Duggar and Christian together, though. That's why I'm wondering how their faith will play out on television. The non-Christians I know cannot be the only ones that think they way they do. I'm wondering what will happen when they make that connection. That's all.

I don't know if the Duggars are a realistic example of all or the majority of Christian families in every aspect. I really don't know anything about them other than what the media has put out there.

I think if I had one critique: how in the world do they have non-Christian or non-churched relationships or even discussions along the lines of the Gospel when they live a life such as they do? Do they attract people who want to know more about Jesus because of them or their family?

Not counting having people brought to them, etc. But, do they know their neighbors? Do they serve them? Do they have community with other believers?

Just the same sorta stuff that God asks each of us to do.

Show should be interesting

People think my family is weird, and we are nothing like the Duggars. But, mainly, since when are we supposed to behave the way unbelievers want us to?

I don't think it's really the particulars that get to people, it's the fact that they appear to go to extremes, I'm not saying they do, I'm saying they appear to....I will get into more detail later, I can't right now as I am typing one handed at the moment...the other hand is feeding my sister....my own personal buddy system, eh?

Ok, I know I said I'd come back later...so it's later(much later), and I have come back...however, at the moment, I am just physically not up to hashing it out right now...I've been pondering for hours just how to express what my feelings are without having anyone think I'm Duggar bashing---(although truthfully, I've seen some people on the internet idolizing them, which IMO, is just as bad)....so when I have had a good night's sleep, and can hopefully breath again(I'm all congested), and when my fingers and hands aren't hurting like crazy...and I've prayed over my post..then I will post my thoughts.

I will say pondering over this thread for the last several hours while going about my duties, did bring out one little impish thought in my mind, which I will dare to say....

Wouldn't it be great entertainment to have a Michelle Duggar/Kate Gosselin episode of wife swap???

Maybe that reality show will tell.

They've already explained that..by Jessa doing the laundry and Jinger doing the ironing.

lol. I didn't mean the hair. I meant that her body has carried that many children, and mine only three, and I'm in much worse shape.

But thank you.

Do the boys do laundry too? I was just wondering if they teach certain chores for boys and certain chores for girls?

Maybe the show will answer all these questions.

I got the impression from the last update that the boys do not do household chores, but I'm not sure anyone came out and said that.

I think the boys do the outside chores, the girls do the inside chores. I remember reading that somewhere.

This is my beef w/ this thread:

Reality show are hardly ever REAL reality.........

I can't get over the fact that people are accusing them of not being a good Christian testimony because they are weird and different and that they should be more "real" like Jon and Kate. Jon and Kate have been caught in several lies, have begged the community, state, and church for handouts, have complained when those handouts have not been good enough, told the state that they were responsible for helping w/ the tups because the state allowed them to have fertility treatments, constantly belittle each other, have no respect of their children, are estranged from almost all of their family members..... YET they are the better testimony? As my three-year old would say, "You've got to be kidding me"

I don't think the Dugger show will last. I don't think they will compromise their beliefs to make a show more exciting, and without that, I just don't think they will have the ratings.
