I don't see it as a great thing at all. I have no issues with the Duggars' and their large family, but I would never want my family put on display as nothing more than entertainment for nosy people. I don't like any shows that do do that with families, especially when they have young children. I wonder if it's ever occurred to them that when their children are older they may resent having their childhoods and private family life laid out for the world to see. That I have issues with.

I think they're brave, given the number of people who despise them and look for any reason to tear them apart.

I wonder if the reality show will actually give a more "real" impression of their family, as opposed to the specials which have to be heavily edited just by their nature.

You mean brave for allowing cameras to record everything for a reality show?

I like the Duggars and respect them. As a homeschooler, I make sure my kids get out and do things....but, I only have 3 and can't imagine dragging 16 kids around to a gazillion different activities. All homeschoolers do things differently. Most are doing a good job, but there are a few whackos out there(and they always seem to end up on Wife Swap!) that give the rest of us a bad rep.

I didn't know about the Bill Gothard thing. Interesting. We do not let any church or denomination dictate to us how we homeschool. I do it because God told me to. And that's that!

I wish the Duggars the best, but, like another poster said, I worry what all of those pregnancies are doing to her body. And she has them close together which doesn't let her body rest in between. It's got to be hard on her system.

I do admire her organizational skills! I could learn a lot from people like that....as I'm organizationally challenged!

I homeschooled my son until the 7th grade. I did keep him separate from the world. Our activities were usually around church or homeschool groups. When I put him in PS I was terrified he would not fit in because of the the hype people gave me about homeschool kids did not fit in because of the lack of socialization. Ha he is one of the most popular kids in high school right now. He does about as well academically at school as he did at home but socially no one believes me when I tell them I homeschooled until 3 years ago.

And yet, miraculously, she doesn't look at all like she's on the verge of shattering into a million pieces or melting into a puddle. Michelle Duggar looks way better than me, even though I'm at least a decade younger and have only 3 kids.

Why do people worry about *her* body? If her uterus falls out after her next baby and has to be removed, it will have done it's job (and done it well! ) and who's concern is that anyway, but hers and her husband's?

Right now my concern has nothing yo do with her uterus, the size of their family, the buddy system or anything like that. I'm just really hoping all the siblings get included in the wedding so that no one feels left out...if you peek back into my thread in parenting, I wrote about it there. AW...Maggie, ya already left..that's what happens when I have to type one handed.

I dunno, but if Jim Bob has a job that supports a house full of chirrins like that and if Michelle is just wonder-mother of the year with everything...then I guess the question is "who cares?" and "why?"

I'm not quite sure what you mean...I don't know what particular aspect the "who cares," and the "why" reference. Could you please explain?

I think she's wondering why anyone cares how big the Duggar family is and whether it continues to grow.

Although if no one cared, there would be no reality show. (Which I just noticed was mentioned in the son's bio on that wedding website.)

Yeah, most of my kids activities are around church also. Thank the Lord for churches with great kids programs, sports, music, etc!

I wouldn't want those cameras following me around. I'm too loud and too flawed. (which would actually make a great show! )

I wonder how real this reality show will be. Are they going to show the good, the bad, and the ugly or just the nice dressed up clean kids they always show.

they are a "Bill Gothard" ATI family......as a result, they know how to "perform" when necessary.....to put on an act "for the public"....

this shouldn't be any stretch for them at all.

my guess is they are doing this for Gothard (probably not "directly"...but, that's what MAY be in their minds)......and are thinking that having this show, will put renewed interest into the diminishing "ministry" of bill gothard....

neither would I....but, that is a characteristic of many ATI/Bill Gothard families.....it's putting that whole "we're such good Christians for having 20 kids....and look how happy we are" charade on display.....because Gothard teaches ALOT about "superficial appearances"....

I have an issue with that. None of us are perfect. None of us are always happy and joyful. I think we set other's up for failure when we try to be something we aren't. I can't tell you how many folks though once they got saved, everything was supposed to go great and they were supposed to always be happy, etc only to get hit hard in the face with reality. And it usually wasn't pretty. And if they became Christians for the "fake Christianity", they usually left the faith pretty fast. That's why I am a strong proponent of being real and what we see on TV of the Duggar's simply isn't reality. No family is that happy, that "together", that clone-like (ok, I know that's probably not a real criticism, but I was raised to be an individual - not a "Mini-Me" of my parents so I like to see kids who are "different").

And what does that teach? Be like us and you will be perfect too? No, I'd rather watch a real family with real conflicts learning how to navigate the real world. That is something I can learn from - not how to organize a pantry for a family of 20. That's why I'm not a proponent of putting on a "show". And why I have an issue with sweep all the bad stuff under the rug and pretend it's not there. You aren't teaching anything by doing that. You aren't teaching your kids (or your non-believer neighbors) how to resolve conflict in a godly manner when you never disagree in front of them (I'm not saying you should have a childish tantrum in front of the kiddos by the way). You aren't teaching your kids how to how to forgive or seek forgiveness when you never let them see it's needed. You aren't teaching your kids how to handle failure when you never need to seek their forgiveness or confess that you screwed up. To me that's real life. That's something I can learn from. That's a witness of what the Christian walk is all about. Simply pretending to be perfect and inserting some "religious" comments into your talk isn't going to win any hearts to the Lord anymore than wearing a "Jesus Loves You" tshirt will.

And that's why I hope this new show isn't more of the same.

Sorry about that...what I was asking if there is no controversy with Jim Bob supporting his family (meaning the state isn't paying them and they're not getting tax money or welfare or whatever) and Michelle is just a normal mother with kids (meaning no controversy) then why does anyone care what their family does...other than the initial shock of at least one baby a year.

I guess the only reality shows I've seen have controversy in them or bizzaro behavior that attracts much like a train wreck.

I come from a fairly large family...most everyone had 10 kids, cept my mom. She was the oldest of 8 and did not want the dependency on her children that her mom gave her. Prolly another thread

A perfect family acting perfectly day in and day out is bad for TV. So I have a hard time believing that's what you'll see (I say 'you' as I don't have television, so I guess I won't be watching, lol). If every show were like that, every show would be alike, and it would run for maybe three weeks and that's it.

After all, people watch soap operas in this country. My great-grandmother's explanation was, "I think people like soap operas because everyone on the show is so miserable that it makes them feel better about their own life!" and she was a wise woman.

I tend to agree. I don't know if I'll get to watch it either, though--we get three channels and one of them is fuzzy.

They are both licensed realtors and I think I read they have commercial properties. He's also been a state representative and ran for the US Senate a few years ago. They did the Dave Ramsey or Larry Burkett courses early on and have been debt free for years.

OK, Mrs. Duggar needs to update her hairdo. LOL! That's my only beef with them. Grow her bangs out or brush them to the side or something. Brings back memories of the 80's.

One person made a reference to them dressing all the same all the time. I went and looked at the pics. Yeah, they all wear long skirts, but it seems like the girls kinda have their own style. They all have long hair, but style it differently. And, different style shirts. Cute sandals, shoes, etc. It was obviously picture day then too, so I'm sure they probably look a little different everyday.

I purposely dress all of my family in similar ways when we go out....girls dressed alike or in the same color, and boys either in the same color as the girls or a complimentary color. It is easier when I try to scrapbook any pics if everyone matches already.

I actually like when siblings match. I think it's attractive...I admit I haven't always liked everything about the Duggar dress code (I thought wearing dresses horseback riding was kind of extreme), but the matching each other part never bothered me. I think matching looks better that having one kid in hot pink and one in cherry red..besides I'm sure the matching clothes are more for pictures/outings...they probably don't have to match every day at home. And when I see family or children portraits, to me the ones where everybody matches (or at least coordinates) are always more attractive, then say a formal portrait where one is in plaid and another is in a floral print of totally different colors, lol.

I used to make sets of clothes for my boys. For one, it's so hard to find good boy fabric that when I found it I bought a lot, lol, and for two, it was quicker to sew two similar outfits than two dissimilar outfits.

That only worked when they were younger, though. Now I have who wears only 5 pocket classic jeans, and one who wears only khaki/camo/olive cargo pants. One likes button-down shirts and one won't wear anything with buttons.

Clearly they never look alike, and since they don't even look alike naked, there's no matching going on! LOL

Oh sure, a lot of us could (hopefully) say that, but I'd be mighty suspicous of kids who have great attitudes all the time. That would be a little unreal. Even the best of couples have moments when they're a little be tiffed at each other. Would they show Michelle and JimBob getting snippy with each other? I doubt it, but we'll see.

I think the show is supposed to start October 1st.

Well, it is going to be pretty hard to pretend in front of a camera 24/7 so it will come down to the editing. I am not sure what would be better, showing a family who lives in harmony at all times, or letting them see real life, but personally, I think that family has their own reality and I am willing to bet that most of the time, they are what you see. They might not be happy on the inside all of the time, but they seem to have been conditioned to be happy on the outside all of the time. And if that is the case, that is pretty sad.

On what do you base that? It seems like you simply can't believe the kids could be content, lol.
