Geek U.S.A. - Smashing Pumpkins.
The guitar solo is about 15 seconds long and it's awesome.

That could be it. It has been a long time since I heard it. The tuba sound was on Paul Clark's 3rd album (don't remember which track)

Since we have moved away from the "pop" genre, but simply songs that got radio play. The greatest of all has to be Van Halen "eruption."

Although this song never got any airplay, it is one of the most awesome solos I have ever heard.

Whoa!! Talk about digging deep! Great slide work in this song.

Brian Setzer did some sweet stuff with the Stray Cats. Stray Cat Strut and Rock This Town are two of my favorites.

Not sure who the guitarist was either, but how about "Running With the Night"; also by Lionel Richie.

Ah, that was Steve Lukather (Toto).

I think that was Kerry King from Slayer.

If we're sticking to radio hits, I'd add Separate Ways by Journey, Wanted Dead or Alive and Dry County by Bon Jovi, Black Cat by Janet Jackson, Still of the Night by Whitesnake, Owner of a Lonely Heart by Yes, Rosanna by Toto and anything by Queen!

He had the Brian Setzer Orchestra going for a few years, with a great brass section. Did he bring back the Stray Cats again?

BSO is still in existence. He's done a couple "solo" albums along the way.

Stray Cats reunited a couple years back for the Hootenany.

My earliest memories of AM rock radio were the guitar solos in the following songs:
"Doctor, My Eyes" by Jackson Browne
"Jackie Blue" by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils
"You're No Good" by Linda Ronstadt
"Reeling in the Years" by Steely Dan
"Hocus Pocus" by Focus

Other great guitar solos in pop songs...most EVERYTHING by Steely Dan, like Peg, My Old School, Deacon Blues, Do it Again (ok, it's a Coral Sitar solo. Still...), Black Friday, Kid Charlemagne, and so on...any of .38 Special's hit tunes, like Hold on Loosely, Fantasy Girl, Caught Up in You, and Back Where You Belong...David Bowie's China Girl, Modern Love and Let's Dance, all featuring SRV on lead guitar.

Honestly, a list like this could go one for days at least and I gotta go get some work done...

Bill,

Grant Geissman is definitely awesome. I didn't realize he was the one who did the guitar solo on Feels So Good. I'm getting him confused with another guitarist -- Steve Khan. Khan is the one I saw with Tom Scott, and yes, it was Geissman who was with Mangione. Both guys would blow people away. They make people like Eddie Van Halen almost look like a novice.

Search You Tube for Allan Holdsworth... Mind boggling...

Eruption got played more as an intro into You Really Got Me(even though it's not) than on its own... For radio play, Eddie's solo on Jackson's "Beat It" probably tops them all for his work... Along with Panama, Hot for Teacher and even Jump... Of course some of his best solos are on songs that you'd hardly hear on the radio... For instance just about anything from Fair Warning besides Unchained...

Radio Play...

Steve Lukather's solo in the Tube's hit, She's A Beauty

Angus Young's solo Hell's Bells

Joe Perry's solo on Sweet Emotion

Jerry Cantrell's solo on Man in a Box

Neil Schon's Wheel in the Sky

Alex Lifeson's solo on Limelight

Randy Rhoads solos Over the Moutain and or Crazy Train

Jimmy Page solo on Ramble On

Clapton's solo on Strange Brew

Keith Scott's sols on Run to You (Bryan Adams song)

Hagar's solo on Can't Drive 55

Carlos Cavazo's solo on Metal Health

Kirk Hammett's solo on Enter Sandman

George Lynch's solo on Breaking the Chains

He doesn't have much in the way of commercial success, but I have to agree the guy's amazing. Then again, if my hands could stretch two octaves on the neck I think I'd be pretty good, too. His hands are abnormally ginormous.

If we're not restricted to popular songs any more, I nominate Stanley Jordan. On his latest release he plays piano with one hand and guitar with the other. He is one of the most innovative musicians I've ever seen.

Jeff beck - Blow by Blow album

Well, it was a popular hit with me anyways.

There's a better version on The Secret Policeman's Other Ball, live with Clapton.

I prefer a more "controlled" Beck. Blow by Blow and Wired were great albums because of that, IMHO. But, it's all good.

Peace

Looks like I'm not the only one busted for driving under the influence of rock n roll!

I thought Van Halen was at their peak during "Women and Children First" and "Fair Warning" I thought they had a rawer, less polished sound than on the previous two and especially "Diver Down" which was the beginning of the over produced album era from then on. Those are still part of my collection because even if I didn't think them good by VH's standards they still kick over a lot of music that was and is out there!

Mean Street has a short but cool solo.

Yeah, we had no idea a headbanger lurked in there!

"Creeping Death" and "One" by Metallica had some great guitar work. Dave Mustaine and Chris Poland of Megadeth could make their fretboards smoke. Take any song from "Peace Sells..." as proof of that claim with special notice given to the intro to "Good Mourning/Black Friday". Dave Ellefson would keep up with those two on his bass and his intro into "Peace Sells..." is one of those most identifiable intros into a song of all time. Of course, Michael Anthony of VH was one of the most overlooked (overshadowed, more like it) bass players although he was awesome in his own right!

For sure... My pals and I would call the local radio station and complain about them treating it like a intro to You Really Got Me... We'd tell them over and over it's a SONG not a piece of one...

quote:

Yup... He even played live with MJ in Dallas... Check out You Tube... I am sure it's still around.

And if you really want to hear some very interesting Eddie you need to find yourself a copy of the Star Fleet Project. Brain May(Queen) and Eddie with some other folks... Three songs... One a tribute to Eric Clapton.... Very neat.. Couple others are something called Stompin Eight, it was Eddie playing with the SNL band when Val hosted... And the tribute to Les Paul were Eddie was on and then some... I believe you can find them on You Tube...

Eddie even did Ted Templeman a favor back in the day(1978) when they first started by playing a solo on a Nicolette Larson song, Can't Get Away From You. He doesn't get credit on the LP, but its well known it's him and if you ever listen to it you know right away...

I am sure it's apparent I was a VH freak...

quote:

Unchained is probably my favorite song from VH. It's dangerous if I hear that song in the car. I crank it up and tend to speed a bit.

Without a doubt... So This is Love can do that to... It's so fluid... For sonic blast the trailing solo at the end of One Foot Out the Door is cool... And the solo in Hear it About it Later is one of kind... Mean Streets and Sinner's Swing are just awesome guitar work from start to finish... Eddie and his brother, Al are tight in Sinner's Swing. Even the solo work in Push Comes to Shove is great even though it's nothing like anything else on the release. There isn't a dud guitar on that whole CD...

The Dream if Over is probably has the the best solo after the DLR albums...

quote:

Heh... I love my IPod...

I don't think anything as really come along and knocked it off... Trying to think of what has been released that has...

The solo on Hang'em High is worth getting the whole CD... Some wicked stuff on Women and Children First... Romeo's Delight... Fools... The tone on Take Your Whiskey Home is perfect... I have my guitar rig set to that tone... And it helps to have a EVH Wolfgang Special :P

You can feel the sound almost going to far regarding the saturation... It was almost too much...It was amazing he could keep at that peak the whole song...

More than his bass playing was his background vocals.... Something very overlooked... He filled a lot holes with his bass playing and even more with his great voice...

Agreed. I think the solo in Wierd Al's "Eat It" was pretty cool too.
