Popsi and I were discussing abortion a little on The Easily Offended thread. It made me wonder if other women and men could tell about how they chose not to abort and what happened. I found myself making that choice in 1971, but really, it was hardly a choice. In February, I learned I was pregnant. I was afraid beyond measure to have children because of the way I had been reared, because I did not trust myself not to abuse my child. But there I was: pregnant, crying, and very angry. We weren't going to have children, and we thought we were doing everything right to avoid having them, but not so, according to the doctor. So I cried to my neighbor about it. Ah, but she thought of things I had never considered: just a bus trip away was New York, she told me, and I could go up there and have it taken care of, being back in time for bed. The next words out of my mouth were words I will never forget: "I could never do that to my baby." My baby. Those words were like an alarm clock, and they woke me up -- wide awake. The very next day found me at the little mall, buying yarn, embroidery thread, needles, and little bibs to embroidery. For my baby! And when she was born, she was the most beautiful child I had ever seen in my whole life, as she lay in that glass bassinet and seemed to look right at me. What a gift she has been -- she and her brother! I bless G-d for them. I bless G-d for their lives. I bless G-d for the gift He gave me that I didn't know I wanted, until after I knew they were cradled in my womb.

Thanks Abiyah. This is a great idea for a thread. I was on birth control when my daughter was conceived. Her dad and I had been married about two very rocky years by then. I believed in death before marriage and no abortion. I feared that my child would have to grow up in the shaky household my partner and I had. Let me just say that she is now a wonderful adult! I told her that God over ruled my plans and made sure that she was here. There must be something He wants her to do. What a privilege.

I was 20, in the military and had just decided to tell my then boyfriend that I wouldn't sleep with him anymore. I had gone to the chaplain just to hear one person say that I could be forgiven, even with as guilty as I felt, even with what all people would say. Was working nights at the time so got home around 0200 and then six hours later was being told I was 3 1/2 months pregnant and not to worry because she (the dr) used to work for PP and I still had a couple weeks to get an abortion and she'd give me all the info I needed. I was shocked enough at hearing how far along I was to actually let the thought sit in my mind for a few seconds. Luckily the next lady I had to talk to (because I worked with hazardous chemicals) told me she had two little girls and they were worth all the work and any trouble. Now he's six and I'm still dealing with the guilt and trying to teach him right and church people who tell me he'll turn out bad because of how he came to exist, but he already loves G-d and his prayers are so sweet.

church people who tell me he'll turn out bad because of how he came to exist, What a rude thing to say. Not only rude -- it is a pure, unadulterated lie. The Bible says that G-d will visit the sins of the people through several generations, and what they are saying is a misunderstanding of this Scripture. Look up visit in your concordance, your Vines, your Bible dictionary, ignoring what people may say/write about this verse. What does it really mean? Every family of the earth is plagued by sin, but it is how each individual in the family looks on sin in his/her own life, because of the call of G-d. That is what makes the difference. Taken in context, when G-d says He will visit the sins, it intends that He knows what the familial sins are, but He will look on each individual with regard to that sin. The called will have His mercy, and the indicator that they have His mercy is how they respond to Him and how they respond to sin. G-d will be there for the one who calls upon G-d, and He will visit (take care of, provide help for) that one in love and forgiveness. Your precious child is already calling on G-d, making his prayers known to Him. Now, it is up to you to lead him in the way he ought to go by demonstration and biblical teaching, surrounding him with godly people and activities.

Yeah, I can remember when my baby brother was 19 and my mom and stepdad informed me that I would inherit everything (this is not true any longer, lol) and I said, 'Hey, you didn't like ME much when I was 19, either!' LOL

I do not have any abortion stories with me as a father or anything, but I am the result of an unwanted teen pregnancy, and I am grateful everyday that my young, unprepared mother took me to term, and allowed a young couple, unable to conceive, the opportunity to be parents. The same story is true for my younger sister. We appreciate the consequences of the choice for life quite personally.

I agree - that whole thing about him turning out bad is totally out of line and most certainly a lie! Have you ever read about the birth circumstances of some of history's greatest leaders? Methinks they would also say you're doing a great job!

Truly. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I was 20 when I learned that I was pregnant with Christopher. My first thoughts after finding out, was that I had to get enough money to have an abortion . . . and even endeavored to try to pawn some jewelry towards that. By the time I finally had my pregnancy confirmed, I was 5 months along . . . and back then, it was considered a high risk to perform an abortion at such a late time during the pregnancy; and so such procedure cost even more money. I consider it an absolute gift from Our Lord that I was not successful in my money-gathering task. In fact, after about 3 days, I broke down in a parking lot, sobbing at what I was even contemplating . . . I had always been against abortion. After that, I contacted an adoption agency and began the procedures to place him for adoption after his birth. A couple of weeks later, I told my dad that I was pregnant and what my plans were. You can read the rest of the story HERE . . . written last year on Christopher's birthday.

I am so glad for each one who has lived and for the mothers who let them live. I am sorry that some here were nearly aborted but glad that they lived anyway. I am thankful for the ones who adopted and parented those of you whose parents chose that direction. One of the arguments that the other side has is that if the child is not aborted, they will be abused. Well, that happens. It happened to Jenny-Fair, it happened to Popsi's mother, and it happened to me. I will clearly state: I would go through all of the abuse again, if I needed to in order to have the life I have now. Would you, Jenny-Fair. Would your mother, Popsi? _____________________________ Bless you, WhiteRose, and your child, Christopher. What a beautiful story -- the story of a mother's heart indeed.

At 21 years old I ended up pregnant by a "casual" boyfriend of mine (i.e. I thought it was a serious relationship, he thought it was casual). His first statement upon hearing I was expecting was to tell me he would pay for an abortion. I considered it for about a day and half and then realized that there was NO WAY I could do it. Unfortunately that pregnancy ended in a miscarriage just two short weeks later. Now, I'm married and DH and I are the proud parents of three wonderful children (just see my avvy). --Kat

Kat, that must have been a tough time. I am glad you have your three children now. I never lost a child, so I can only imagine the difficulties and emotional pain.

I think the grief is compounded by the difficult circumstances. I feel horrible for saying it, but part of me is glad that pregnancy ended as it did. I don't think could have stood being tied to that man for life through our child. But at the same time I do grieve the loss of that little one and wonder what he or she would have been like... --Kat
