Well, a GED certainly might affect you if you're trying to get into a good, competitive college. And I happen to think that for many (not all) adoption is the better choice, but obviously it's not well supported by either the secular or the Christian community.

I don't think it's realistic to expect a teen mom to go to a good, competetive college. But if she really needed to for some reason, it would be quite easy after two years at a junior college. Seriously, people don't seem to understand that there's a trade-off. If you are a pregnant teenager and you want to keep your baby, then you have to grow up, and the consequences of this sort of thing is giving up a lot of what you want. That's what parenthood is about anyway. I wanted to go into the honors program at University of Puget Sound. Oh, well. That is not conducive to parenthood. Years in school prolongs the time between when she has the baby and when she has any earning power. Who is going to support her in the meantime? Welfare won't--they will tell her to flip burgers instead. Her parents? I doubt that lasts long.

And if she doesn't go to college, what are the odds she'll have a decent earning potential? What are the odds she'll get a low paying job with just a GED and child to support? There are programs out there to help single moms who want to further their education, and I totally support them. I think I've said before that my brother (who went to a decent college) was friends with a single, teen mom who was getting government help to support her during her college years. That will pay back dividends in that the mom should be able to command a higher salary once out of college, and therefore pay more in taxes.

I am saying exactly that, Ruth, that she needs to get to college as quickly as possible rather than wasting a couple more years in high school. And, I don't know how long ago it was that your brother was friends with this girl, but trust me, the gov't won't pay your bills while you go to college anymore. You HAVE TO work, and I have worked two or three jobs at the same time as going to college, but it just about killed me and it totally wrecked our family life. And I was in my 20s at the time. (did not get my GED and go to college until I was divorced)

Well, if the college in question will be okay with a GED, then you could have a point, depending on when the girl gets pregnant. If she's a senior already, it might be just as well to finish it out. If she's 14 or 15, then many colleges don't want them that young, unless they are prodigies or something. As for my brother's friend, it wasn't that long ago (less then 10 years). I think they gave her grants to attend college that could be used for tuition, fees, books, whatever she needed, but it's possible she also had a part time job.

I think it's obvious that not all girls who get pregnant in high school are the same. They have different backgrounds, family situations, etc. and for many girls, the daycare works out perfectly. For others, obviously not and they go and get their GED and college and move on as well. I do believe the daycare is a good thing to have in place for those girls in need of it.
