My grandma swears by flylady, and yep its probably because she lives alone and doesn't really have to worry about anything else like kids and stuff. But for me it was a lose lose situation. I'd never get everything done so my house was still mess and then I'd feel like **** cuz i didn't get the whole list done ect. I try to have a place for everything and everything in its place (like dirty dishes in the sink NOT UNDER IT! - Thats was the thing that irritated me the most).
I have two dressers and a tall plastic drawer cart thing for my sewing stuff and specific drawers for specific things. I have three toy boxes. One for my step daughter when she's here and one for my son - both of which are upstairs in dradyn's room. And then I have a smaller box downstairs for dradyn's "play with all the time toys" This is the box my serger came in just to give you perspective on the size. I try to rotate the toys for the upstairs box to the dowstairs box everyonce in a while so he feels like he got new toys. Also dradyn never plays with the upstairs toys unless i'm up there sewing and then when we are coming back down we pick them up immediatly. Another thing that helps me with the toys is I pick them up three times a day. Once at nap time ,once a dinner time, and once at bed time. Also doing one load of laundry a day helps too cuz then it doesn't seem so over whelming. Oh and dishes twice a day too, once after breakfast and once after dinner. Now my tupperware cupboard - open carefully or you might get stuff flying at you - I just throw them in there!
Oh and I know what you guys mean by a room having alot of purposes. I live in a small 2 bedroom townhouse and My living room at one time was the living room, family room, sewing room, office, and dining room all in one. We did move all the sewing stuff up to our bedroom which helped alot. Try to find a room that only has one or two purposes and move somthing in there out fo your living room. It helped mine tremendously.

Oh yes...that is my next task...the clothes. And we live in an area where it will be warm and beautiful mid-day, but will be 20-30 degrees cooler in the evening and morning, so I have to hang on to the warm weather clothes a little longer and combine them with sweaters.

I definitely like a lot of FLylady's tips - but yes, that dirty dished under the sink idea I found ridiculous too!

What I like about her....
perfection is not necessary, any cleaning blesses my family
just do it! (Ok, that's Nike, but she has a similar principle)
baby steps - don't try to change everything all at once because you won't be able to keep up with it
swish n swipe the bathrooms - this I like. I don't do it consistently every single day, but most days I do.

Sarah - about the toy buckets - is that a hard rule to enforce? Our kids love playing these imaginative and elaborative games where they take their stuffed animals to school (or whatever) and it always involves a whole bunch of different types of toys.

yeah mine do that sometimes too. Mine love to do packed backpacks, and take their dolls to the grocery store, or church, while wearing their dress up clothes, etc .....my rules for that kind of play are.....
*they have to start with a perfectly cleaned room
*they can't dump buckets to find the one toy they want...they can only pull out that one from the bucket
*they aren't allowed to have more then three sets out at once...and that only if both rooms are spotless beforehand. If only one room is clean beforehand then I limit it to two sets out at once.
*they have to joyfully clean up after they are done or else next time I will not allow them to do it again.

Mostly it's a matter of me staying on top of it and when they are done making sure they clean it all back up properly...takes all of ten minutes on my part and saves me lots of headaches later on down the road.

Hi organizing extraordinaires!!!!! Just reading through and have come away with some great tips, thanks! As peculiar said about January, I know The Container Store has a MAD sale in January so you might want to check that out. And similar idea to (I hope I can post this here) craigslist is freecycle*dot*org. You're not guaranteed the item and it may take some extra time to get what you want but hey, pppft, it's free!
