The only reason I would get "worked up" about the fake fireworks and the lip-syncing girl is that. . .

It makes the Olympics nothing more than a movie. Instead of it being real and raw, it has been generated and phoned in.

It's not a huge deal. Just a little annoying.

knowing acoustics and logistics, it's not suprising that the girl was lip syncing.....the sound quality would have been horrendous if she had a "live mic" (and, the echoing would have been terrible.....in an open-air facility such as that).....plus, if you WERE NOT watching it on TV, and were in the audience, you would have barely seen her anyway....

for me...not a big deal....

still a huge...massive...and impressive show....

The girl was replaced because her appearance was substandard.

As is all that is allowed to be seen by the Chinese government during these games...

Eh... that depends. It's conceivable that Sara Brightman and her co-star were actually singing and that Liung Liung (sp?) was actually playing the piano. Given the level of detail put into everything else, I'd expect the Chinese to have factored acoustics into the design of the stadium (if they can dampen the reflections in the water cube, they should be able to do it in the bird's nest). If you've got a strong voice and good mic technique, it shouldn't be that hard. Whether or not a 7 yr old can do that...

I got an e-mail yesterday from the Voice of the Martyrs. The Chinese pastor who had been behind the idea of the Olympic prayer band (it's advertised on this site) was arrested the day the Olympics started, while he was trying to bring medicine to his sick wife. His wife was also arrested, and so was another pastor. I've been reading on the VOM website, and many Christians have been arrested during the duration of the Olympics. The Chinese have opened an investigation on the prayer bands that were distributed to home churches within in China. These bracelets --shown here--remind people to pray for China.

any who... I was watching FNC this morning, and there's brewing controversy, or at least legal speculation as to what are the actual ages of the Chinese female gymnast team (16 is the minimal age for the IOC's standards). Questions regarding China fibbing the birth documents or what not, are being raised...

Yes but the number of people in the country may have something to do with the athletes you will have in each and the more you have, the more chance there then is to get a quality one, Geez, I thought this was obvious!

How about Mark (or is it Michael) Phelps making history. Pretty good for him with 11 gold medals for his achievements. I heard he was a loner at school and he is not very sociable and used to get picked on. He has an amazing story.

And, success is the greatest "revenge" for people who have gone through situations such as that....

I was the same as him in school, as well.....and, I have become quite successful in my career (and, my best years are ahead of me)......

and, I can say that the getting picked on/bullying makes success just that much more "satisfying".....

Why don't people like the Olympics?

I'm excited to watch it! :)

People don't like the drug factor and the fact that the athletes are now mostly professionals who devote full-time to their sport. In the old days (pre-'84 olympics), the US athletes were mostly college students (especially the basketball team), and for most of them it was their one shot at glory. It was more pure, at least on our side. It was always the American kids going up against the drugged up, amateur-in-name-only Russians and East Germans, who always seemed to have a judge or two in their pockets.
quote:

I also love the human interest stories about the athletes.

This is another thing that drives a lot of people crazy. All these 'up close and personal' profiles of the athletes (from childhood - a budding talent, olympic dreams, tragedy, injury, failure at a previous olympics, renewed determination, a second chance at glory, cue the music, fade the background, sniff!) They're all basically the same story lines. Meanwhile, there are events going on we'd like to see. You hardly ever see boxing or wrestling much anymore. ABC used to show as many events as they could. I miss Jim Mckay, too! Now, you get gymnastics ad nauseum, swimming, beach volleyball (with shots of Misty May's tramp stamp), ten thousand commercials and, of course, personal profiles.

Nodding head firmly in agreement! If some of these folks had to hold down full-time jobs & train, like those who competed before the 1984 games, they wouldn't be able to compete. Just think about those from the 1932 or 1948 games. WOW!

I say, I say, boy . (blatant refrence to your avatar! )you hit that nail on the head! They haven't been the same since NBC has been airing them.

He just made history. Michael Phelps is the first to get 8 gold in one Olympics !

Drew Ginn and Duncan Free (Aussies) won gold for the rowing pair event.

Hey another two got gold in the men's rowing pair for the Aussie's! Forsheim and Brennan are the two.

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!

Yeah, but you didn't get the men's coxless four, that still belongs to the Brits!

I watched something this week about the 1908 Olympics and the US were one of the few (if not the only) who had intensive coaching.

It's truely amazing that there was so much concern over the pollution and humidity but records of some kind or another are being smashed left, right and centre.

NO, I am not watching any of it. I don't think the US should be there and I think it is a tragic to put on such an outward show of pride and glory when we KNOW how terribly persecuted Christian's are in China.

Why would I look to them for entertainment? Plus the whole water diversion issue is a tragedy in and of itself.

Water diversion--that reminds me. I remember watching before the Olympics about how most of China is in a drought, and how the farmers won't be able to grow their crops because of the water being diverted to Beijing. I've also noticed that Beijing is getting a lot of rain. Does Beijing always get a lot of rain? Are the farmers getting rain, too, or are they still in a drought?

We may be talking semantics here but intensive coaching is different from being paid to do your sport/train.

Before the 1984 games, most athletes were college students or had jobs to contend with in addition to training. Families had to make financial sacrifices to buy equipment, or to attend to the games.

Then there were the London 1948 games. Games taking place just 3 years after the end of WWII. How many of those athletes had the opportunity to have professional training?

Speaking only for the Brits, because I haven't a clue about other countries, the women had to make their own shorts and vest.

Most athletes were college students, but many of the Americans had access years before other countries to coaches and training. I am not saying it is wrong, I'm just saying what happened.

Even now the Brits struggle for funding ~ but when invested (and I'm not saying it should be just dished out), it's worth it.

Bolt is something else. Wow. I don't think he was even in top gear. He'd be even faster if he kept looking ahead!

And I think he's in the 200m in a few days.

Over here IF you can gain the eye of a sponsor, usually a corporate sponsor, that takes care of your funding. In fact one of the USA's beach vollyball players was wearing sunglasses without the lenses because of confilct with his corporate sponsorship.

Not sure who's sponsoring Michael Phelps, but I think he has several. (Think I'll do a web search on that later.) The press over here has been pretty mum about it, but it's what has allowed him to train like he does.

All this discussion has me looking at the pre-1980 games with a different perspective than the most recent ones. I'm thinking of how much harder it was for them then as opposed to now.

Sorry, if I sounded like I was debating with you, actually I'm admiring those who participated in the 1932 & 1948 games. My thinking is they had greater obstacles to overcome.

You didn't sound like that. I'm thinking the obstacles change over time. First was training, then funding, now we expect our competitors to win against the odds and give them a hard time if they lose or come second. There are few who will smile as a silver is placed round their neck. Katie Hoff didn't, Richard Thompson did after the 100m ~ he just loved being part of the history.

And that's what it's all about isn't it? Wherever someone is placed, they have a place in history, they are amongst the best in the world. Second or third or last is not failure. They were good enough to race against the best in the world.
