If so, what kind of work is it, and what do you do?

(I put this here because I wanted it to be ladies only. [8D] Sorry if it's a repeat; I remember seeing a similar thread, but it was so long ago that I figured it'd died already.)

I *used* to volunteer, until they decided that I should get paid. =)

I work with children... I'll go to any age that they ask of me, but I prefer little ones... =)

I'll answer my own question. :)

I used to volunteer at a women's/children's shelter, mostly dealing with clothing....which sounds easy, but it wasn't. That was mainly because I was usually working alone and everything within the donations were disorganized. Working with the actual clients/people was fine.

The only work I'm doing now (I'm really a "visiting student," which sounds awesome), is in a biomedical research lab (not here at my home university, but I'm doing both simultaneously)....helping him and his post-doctorals (and whoever else) with their own projects, then after a while, I can start my own if I am ready. I hopefully will get the lab mice used to human interaction so they can be experimented on without them being used to being handled by people...and we will do experiments on certain proteins, that, if removed from the DNA/genome, give the mice something similar to schizophrenia and memory/synaptic problems... (the mutated mice have no memory and no social skills). So we take those, do experiments, look at the brain slices/channeling, etc. to figure out what this protein does to affect the mice this way. Hopefully, his lab will figure it all out and be able to help humans with those problems (depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's...and anything else that this protein/gene {SynGap, RasGap} may affect in the brain's biochemical pathways). But, I hope that, already, this shows people that proteins (or the lack thereof) can have a drastic effect on the brain and behavior.

I volunteer for the local chapter of a national organization dedicated to fighting a children's disease (I know that's vague, but I don't want to get too specific for privacy purposes.) I sit on the planning committee for the annual fundraising walk.

I started 3 years ago when I wanted to get experience in the field I was at school for. I loved it so much, that I keep going back every year. I mostly do promotional stuff, and I try to volunteer in the office doing any little thing that needs to be done, but that's harder to do now with a small child.

I plan to volunteer at school once my kids start. As well, when the kids are older I want to have the whole family volunteer at the food bank.

I volunteer at a few different places. I volunteer at the Rescue Society for the animals and at a Ministry outreach program called Willing Hands.
What I want to do is to get back to volunteering at the Rape and Crisis Center.

DH and I both volunteer for two different campaigns, and another political organization. We also do re-builds for disaster areas within our community.

I do one shift per week at a local crisis pregnancy and post-abortion counselling centre. I also work for Wycliffe Associates, putting Scripture translations in all the languages of Babel on computer (fun!).

I volunteer every Monday night at my local Rescue Mission doing a program with the children while their parent is in a chapel service. I provide a BIBLE lesson, christian childrens movie, & a craft for them to do. It is a fun time working with these children.

3cappuccinosmom -> RE: Do you volunteer? (8/9/2008 7:56:49 AM)

Yep. Children's ministry at church. I teach SS every other month, volunteer as a helper on my "off" months, and take on whatever jobs need to be done while my children are in activities.

Oh, that is AWESOME!!! I would so do that forever without pay, LOL.

As of right now hubby and I are the youth directors at our church, and it's on a volunteer basis. We love it and feel led to do it. I teach the teen SS class and hubby and I lead a teen Bible study on Wed nights, among other things.

I'd love to volunteer more, at the local rescue mission and crisis pregnancy centers, the local children's home, etc. but it's hard while my kids are small. I don't have anyone to watch them them while I do those things. Hopefully, when they get older, we can all volunteer together. Since we plan to homeschool, I really want to involve them in things like that.

My mom and brothers volunteered at a Missions Memorial Museum a few years ago. That place was truly awesome (as in -- going through it I would be completely awed). They also volunteered at Voice of the Martyrs, as it's published nearby them. I wished I could've done those things with them.

You can! Get in touch with Wycliffe Associates (you're in the US, I suppose?) and ask about Scripture keyboarding. I'm not sure whether they still have separate American teams because here in the UK they've just overhauled the system to do everything by computer, so no postal expenses anymore.. You don't need to know any foreign languages. PM me if you like to know more.
