Trust me, she isn't going to suck your blood. They do drink blood, but almost never from unwilling donors, and they don't just pounce on you, ok? Your only concern, as far as I can see, is that you attend a church that doesn't mind having a vampire for a secretary. That would definitely bother me.

I'm the bookkeeper for my church and while my job may not be directly spiritual as in what the pastors do all day, my job is working for the Kingdom. I can't comprehend doing my job without a deep faith. And secretaries face even more than I do. Our secretaries are ministers too! They take the phone calls of the person who needs Jesus, they are the first ones the person needing counseling runs into at the office. They are the ones who need to discern when to interrupt the pastor and when to refer on. They need to be the eyes and ears for the pastors and know when someone needs some pastoral intervention. They are no less ministers than the "ministers" of the church. All that to say that if you work at a church no matter how "secular" that job may seem, you need to be a believer and you need to be a Christ follower. A vampire isn't.

The British eat blood pudding. Whether it is a vampire cult or football cult, my question would be how a member of any cult could be a Christian. I would find it interesting to open a conversation with such a person and find out what was really going on in their head. BTW -- Anybody remember the guy who used to be on these forums that insisted he was a werewolf?

ORIGINAL: phosadaud Well, crazy for sure.... But seriously, where I work, I am held to high moral standards because my position is working for God's Church. I may not be in the same position as a pastor, but I represent the church and I am on the "front lines". I just don't know how you can do that and be a self-professed vampire - believer or not. I'd talk with the pastor and if nothing was done, I'd be looking for another church (and I loathe church-hopping so that says a lot). phosy, It works the same way in most churches around here, too. In fact, background checks are done on most church employees before they are hired. It is not very productive to have a deacon, secretary, or pastor engaging in affairs, theft, etc. Any time the people make the church look bad, it takes much longer to soothe the hurts and regain respect than it took to lose it.

I am a church secretary and you hit the nail on the head, phosey (of course)! This is one of the reasons that hiring within the church can be a good thing. Then you know what kind of teaching your employees are getting. --Kat

I think that church officers MUST come from within the congregation. However, I don't see a problem hiring employees from a variety of walks of life. I can think of a number of unbelievers who are more trustworthy than believers. It would give a good opportunity to get into the lives of the the community.

I agree Mr. Horton. Although I am not opposed to having some standards I think hiring employees outside the congregation the thing to do. I have been in many churches in my short life of 57 years and I have yet to find one that didn't have their share of gossips and busybodies. It wold be inappropriate to let them have jobs where peoples personal lives were concerned. JMHO

Speaking as someone who works for a church, it's not what most people think it's like. You are smack dab in the center of all the church politics and ugliness. Most folks actually don't last very long - and the ones like me who do, last because we have very strong constitutions. Not one of my "secular" jobs before this even remotely touched the ugliness I see working in a church. Trust me, this job is NOT a way to bring people to Jesus. Now, as far as hiring outside the church, I don't have an issue with that provided the person is still a believer. However, there are benefits and there are disadvantages to going outside your church body. I'm not sure I could say one is better than the other. Just different. And ANYONE who is a gossip or a busybody has ZERO reason to work for the church. If you can't keep your mouth shut, don't even bother asking to get hired.

I am an administrative assistant for a church I do not attend and of which I am not a member. There are definite advantages and disadvantages, but it seems that the advantages are more than the disadvantages. However, before they would hire me, they wanted to know that I am a believer! Why? Because when people call in distress, when they want to be saved, when they are grieving, they need someone who is a believer to answer and someone who can pray. If one is not a believer, I have no clue what they are going to do with those! Someone who thinks she is a vampire, huh? Weird! Glad she is no longer in that position. Perhaps she can get a job as a butcher or something.
