catlady11 -> Older Woman Having Their 1st Baby (8/6/2008 1:03:17 PM)

I'm getting married in 2 days. Huuby to be and I are both 47. We would love to be able to have a baby (adoption is always an options for us). Just wondering if there are any "older" ladies out there who have had or are having their 1st child. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Hi, Catlady!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding -- how exciting! [sm=heart.gif]

I am 42 and had my first pregnancy at 41. Our son Adam was born when I was 42. He is 4.5 months old and a real dream of a kid. It's going great!

If you have questions, ask away. I might be one of the few with first-time mom status at 40-something but I know there are others who have had a child in their 40's, as well as women whose mothers were 40-something when they were born or women that KNOW someone who had a baby in their 40's.

Really, it's going great for us. Sure, we're tired, but so are the other new moms who are 15 years younger than me, and our son keeps us both young (but we were both "young" anyway). [;)]

Jeanie

Hi TwinCity. It's so encouraging to hear about "older" couples having children and enjoying parenthood. It just amazes me when I talk to unsaved friends about it - their response is - well if you find out something is wrong with the baby you can always aboort. That is NOT an option for us. Don't know if we have it in his to deal with a special needs child but then again God knows what we can and can't do - which is essentionaly nothing without Him.

TwinCityGirl -> RE: Older Woman Having Their 1st Baby (8/6/2008 5:02:58 PM)

My parents had my sister (their youngest) when they were 40. She is going to be 26 next month. My mom's doctor was a weird man and he was all freaky about her being 40 and pregnant. Scared-freaky. My mom had had 7 babies prior to my youngest sister (yes, SEVEN) so during the labor/delivery when her doctor was freaking out my mom calmly looked at him and said "You don't have to be here if you don't want to. I can do this on my own." He stayed, but he shut up.

My sister is perfectly normal, happy, healthy and very, very beautiful. She got married last summer and all 7 of us siblings were in her wedding. It was amazing. SHE is amazing, and when I look at some of my peers' parents (who are in their 60's like my parents) my parents seem so young. She really did keep them young.

Don't be afraid of what the world tells you. If the Lord puts a baby in your life, you know He didn't goof up putting it there.

I also thought, when pregnant, that if the Lord didn't want women in their 40's to have babies then He would surely take away their fertility during those years -- which He doesn't -- so there you have it. Clearly the Lord is okay with 40-somethings having babies.

Look at that sweet boy in my avatar. You think he gives a care his mom is 42? He is such a little snuggler and he lights up whenever he sees me. LIGHTS UP. I tell you, that shaves about 15 years off me each and every day....he is beautiful and without question he is a gift from God (as are all babies, no matter mama's age, but you get my drift...)

My aunt was 41 when she had her son, other than some birth complications unrelated to my aunt's age, he is a very healthy 12 year old. My cousin has kept my aunt and uncle young. They really don't seem like they are 53.

Jeanie, I love your story. [:)]

Just wanted to point out that ANYone at ANY age can be blessed with a special needs child. And contrary to what doctors will tell you, the risk does not go up astronomically for older moms.

Also, as with many trials in life...you don't have what it takes to go through it until God asks you to go through it. His grace shows up exactly when you need it, and not a moment before, in my experience. Don't borrow trouble for tomorrow...today has enough of its own.[:D]

Praying God's perfect timing and peace for you as you TTC.

An old friend of mine had her first child at 45 and her second child at 47. That was almost 25 years ago, and things are so much better now than then.

Haven't seen any of your posts in a good long time -- I think we frequent different threads. But it's so good to hear about your baby boy. Congratulations to you and your husband!

The librarian at my school had her first (and only) child at 39. I guess that's not that old, but she's in her mid-40s now and I would never guess she was older than early 30s.

My parents were young parents (had me in their early 20s) and old parents (adopted my youngest brothers in their late 30s/early 40s... I don't remember exactly how old they were [&:]). There were advantages and disadvantages to both.

Hi, Lisa!

Thanks for the congratulations about Adam. He's just a great kid all around. Really, thanks for posting that.

Catlady - how did the wedding go?

I am 36, will be 37 next month. My husband I have not even start trying yet. We were supposed to start trying in Oct, but I am nervous because of my job situation. But I think no matter what I will try in April.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU, DONNA!!!!!!!!!!!! Having a disabled sister, and having had people flat out say to our faces, "it's all because my mom was 38 when she had her," that really hurt. And I knew that wasn't even true because we know women who were 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, and 45 and had healthy babies, and we've known women in their early twenties who had disabled babies. And one of the people that said that went and had a baby at 38 herself (she was married at 32, and had her babies at 34, 36, and 38, all healthy and normal) It really hurts to have people [sm=fireanger.gif] flame you for something that already hurts.

THIS little girl's parents had her very young.

W.O.F. -> RE: Older Woman Having Their 1st Baby (9/2/2008 9:23:03 PM)

MOST disabled children (particularly Down's syndrome children) are born to women in the 20 to 25 year old age group.

The risk MAY be higher for older women...but there are two ways of looking at the stats.

IF at 45, you have a 1 in 240 chance of having a Down's syndrome baby....you also have a 239 in 240 chance of NOT having one....
