Biblically this a no brainer. But a recent clip from a sermon enlarged my perspective (see below) of just how the Scriputres and we should view the church.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDChA3sGbnU

So what are your thoughts on the necessity of the church - particularly in light of the decline of the Western Church?

Super... more theology from YouTube. Is it time to toss out our Bibles and just wait for YouTube revelations?

In answer to your unasked question: Nope, I didn't view the link. Ain't gonna. Can't make me.

Jimbo,

I'm normally right there with you, but did you actually watch the video before tossing that out? There was a ton of Scriptural inference (in context no less) embedded in that clip.

So you judged before you listened (and saw).

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry - James 1:19

Jimbo, it's a less than three minute clip taken from the guy's pulpit. Indulge this brother if you really want to know.

The flash player on my computer will not work and cannot be fixed without a complete overhaul.

So please list the points you wish to discuss and I will discuss them with you.

Thanks

Well, Jesus established His church and set people in leadership positions like shepherds over a flock of sheep. Much of the NT tells us how to live together, and tells us to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together. Pretty central.

rcjames, I don't have time to transcribe the video for you and there is simply too much there to summarize. Please feel free to tackle my question without the context of the video.

I watched
I listened

Yes, the church is important as in the body being the church proclaiming Jesus to the world.

If this man was going elsewhere as in the church as a tradition being important...well, there might be a conflict or two there.

doinkdom,

This pastor is a huge Piper fan, so I doubt there is any issue with church tradition.

While there is certainly a lot of junk on You Tube, there are videos by john macarthur, rc sproul, john piper and the like. Being on YT doesnt take away from their doctrinal soundness, there is a lot of good to be found there. As to the video in question, he makes an obvious point, and he is right that the church is the principle means of spreading the gospel.

I watched. The necessity of the church? The church IS. God's people ARE. And NOTHING can prevail against us because we are His. And our purpose is to proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.

Much of what is portrayed as 'church' isn't.

I love Piper, too.

So when you asked, "So what are your thoughts on the necessity of the church - particularly in light of the decline of the Western Church?"

Are we talking about the awful and spoiled American church with it's tolerant gospel and mamsy-pamsy attitude?

Cause, imo, one of the greatest and most neglected mission fields is in our own backyards. And it doesn't require "the church" universal to reach it.

Amen. The question: Can anything good come out of YouTube? is yes. The follow up question: Does it happen everyday? certianly no.

Quoting scripture at me won't con me into doing something against my better judgment. Satan used the same tactic with Jesus.

Are you unable to summarize this... significant message?

Ephesians 3:10

To put that in context, verses 9-12:

8 To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ,

9 and to bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God who created all things;

10 so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places.

11 This was in accordance with the eternal purpose which He carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord,

12 in whom we have boldness and confident access through faith in Him.

Is that, then, the point of the video?

Sorry to be such a stick in the mud, but this is a text forum, not a video farm and not a chat room.

I'm also partial to posts in proper case instead of all caps.

I'm also a dying breed in that I don't have a cell phone and get along quite nicely without one.

In any case, I still think that a brief summary of the message isn't too much to ask.

All people need community. This is true for Christians as well. And that’s why developing, fostering, and creating community is the most important role a church can provide. Because the institution itself doesn’t make a difference in the world – the people who make up the church do. Short of divine intervention…

No one can be led to God if a friend doesn’t bring them to church.
No one can be fed if someone doesn’t give financially
No one can be healed if there isn’t anyone to do the healing

There’s a phrase they use at my church when someone makes a suggestion for a new ministry. Someone on staff says, “Great idea! Go. Be the church.” God didn’t intend to establish countless layers of bureaucracy to help the poor he wanted believers to act.

So yes the church is hugely important. But “the church” is much more than the buildings we worship in.

Yep. And Blackberry is a fruit you use to make pie or jam - or Baptist deacons use to make homemade wine.
