If anyone has heard this group recently, please give an opinion as to how their present group/style of music compares to that of one year ago. I have heard that they do lots of Praise and Worship style in the first set. They used to be my favorite group, but I have been upset as to all the changes in personnel.

You're not alone, I don't like it at all. I saw them once where they did a morbidly slow 7 or 8 minute melody of severall praise songs. BUT, I guess the bright side of this is that they had severall songs in that melody, instead of doing one P&W song that was 8 mintes long. Don't get me wrong, this group has the talent to easily continue the PSQ legacy. But it's my opionion that they should refocus those abilities towards mainstream traditional Southern Gospel music. But that's just an opionion. If this is truley where God is leading them, then more power to them for embarking into unknown territory for the group. I'll wish them well. As for those of us who like the old PSQ, at least we sure have some great recordings to cherish. I love the PSQ recordings with Brian Carter, Kerry Beatty, Tony Peace, Jeff Pearles, Jerry Kelso/ Andrew Ishee. The best music in recent memory from that group came from that lineup, closley followed by the songs that John Rulapaugh, Kerry Beatty, Tony Peace/Rick Fair, Aaron McCune, and Andrew Ishee performed.

Agree with you there. "It's Setteled" was phenominal. But I thought "Knock,Knock,Knock" was their only one to reach #1 ? quote:
ORIGINAL: danielmount Both of the lineups you mention are top-notch. Even though I think the late '90s group had possibly the best sound, my favorite PSQ project is 2004's It's Settled. It has the group's only two #1 hits, and several other songs that could have gone to the top.

We've heard them twice. The first time it was a lot of P&W. The second time they got back to a lot of the Palmetto State songs. They had Kerry's dad Woody filling in for the Baritone that night. They were a lot better the second time we heard them. If they will continue with the old Palmetto State songs and Southern Gospel Songs I believe they will do a lot better than singing so many P&W songs.

This is just my opinion for what it is worth. I fell like they have lost 2 or 3 steps. They have some talent and a very good bass but I think that could be the problem also because he is part of management now.

I've always found it interesting that people either like SG -or- P&W but not both. It's like they're mutually exclusive. I like both, but I feel I'm the only one that does. *shrug* However, my idea of P&W doesn't involve a male quartet. I would think more like mixed trio or something like that. So in that regard, it might be a bit odd to go to a "SG" concert that has the "cliche" male quartet and they break out P&W songs for 1/2 the concert.

I've never heard them live. My Parents heard them again recently and said that they were not good at all. To each his own I guess.

Thanks for the input. The comments verify what I have heard. I will try to get Kerry in a corner at the NQC and find out where the group is headed. I agree that they were the best when they first re-organized with Jeff, Kerry, Brian, and Tony. I think Kerry has changed interests, and in my opinion, not for the better.

Actually the only time I really like Praise and Worship songs is when they are sung by a male quartet. For example, I really like the Lefevere Quartet's "Total Praise" CD and it is all Praise and Worship songs. I have heard other people sing the same songs (original artists, praise singers at my church, etc) and did not really care for them.

I love to hear SG quartets singing Southern Gospel. If they throw in some Praise and Worship it is more than fine with me. I love both venues. I was really surprised when my children became teens and listened to alot of Contemporary Christian. I think I let myself enjoy it, too. Southern Gospel is by far my favorite music, but I have room for others, too. DC Talks "What If I Stumble" is awesome Everything by Code of Ethics is great. Barry Blaze is an awesome young man.

I saw PSQ about three weeks ago. I was pleased with the new lineup. I certainly don't recall any P&W music. I'm sure my father, who is one who complains about "7-11" songs would have had a negative reaction if they had, but he was very happy with them, as well. I was a little apprehensive about the new lineup based on what I'd heard here. So unsure that I didn't buy their new CD until the intermission. I think the group has basically the same big sound they've had for the past ten years. Perhaps some of the individual parts aren't quite as strong as past singers, but how many singers come close to the talents of John Rulapaugh or Rick Fair? Still, each singer is quite talented and up to the task. Certainly there were much weaker singers in several of the big-name, nationally known groups who were at that concert series. It takes time for any new lineup to gel. They are still at the point where they are singing songs from earlier albums that followers of the group will associate with earlier singers. In time they will make those songs their own, and/or find their own material. They definitely are already very enjoyable, and they have the potential to be wonderful soon. It's like a sports team being in a building phase. The crowd had a wait-and-see attitude. The consensus was that they needed to prove themselves. This was evidenced by the total lack of activity at their product table before the concert, but that completely changed by intermission. I had trouble getting close enough to the table to buy my CD after the first half of the show. Casey, the new piano player was a huge hit, a real crowd pleaser, and that is saying a lot for somebody playing where Andrew Ishee's big personality is remembered. Casey was getting a lot of favorable attention at the product table during the break. They did some classic material, like Get Away Jordan, that had the crowd on their feet. I think they were received as well or better than the headliner, BF&A. (Before the BF&A fans get upset, let me say that group was "off" that night because they were missing a singer.) During the second half, Woody Beatty came out and did some classic songs with them. He sang some, and played the piano while Casey played his saxophone. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing them again in the Spring.

PS closed out the 2008 World Premier last night. They rocked the house. I was very impressed with them. Individually and collectively they are as good as any group on the road today. I look forward to seeing them again soon, even without Naomi Judd. Edited to correct spelling.

I am very disappointed to see that The Palmetto State Quartet is not booked on the NQC. Very sad. They are a great quartet.

I have read these posts and was going to respond a few weeks ago, but didn't. I walked over today from the place we were performing at Silver Dollar City and heard "Palmetto's" set. We have also worked with them 3 times in the past few months. These guys are as strong, if NOT stronger than the group has EVER been. I have been a fan PSQ for years, so I feel I know what I am talking about. I would put them up against ANY quartet in this industry. They can sing you a straight up quartet classic and then turn around and sing some "Praise and Worship." Not many groups can do that. Some may not like that PSQ have "stepped out of the box" musically. I think it's awesome. If you want to reach a bigger audience you have to be able to expand your reach, and RIGHT NOW, Praise and Worship is where most churches are in their worship style. I have talked with every man in PSQ and I consider them my friends. They all love the classic quartet sound that they have been known for, but all want to reach the lost. If that means singing "Praise songs" (when needed) they will. These men are pro's and also follow God's leading, they won't force any type of music that they feel won't be affective for the crowd they are singing to. I applaud them for their willingness to sing and minister for the cause of Christ. Kerry, Jeremy, Brian, Kasey and Larry; keep "mashing it."

Bryan: I am aware of who you are and since I started this topic I will respond for myself: PSQ was my favorite qt for many years, however one has to be suspect of any group that has constant turn-over. I realize lots of churches are forcing P&W music on its members. If it works for them, all right with me. I just happen to like Southern gospel the best and have no time for P&W music. I believe it is somewhat of a style fad in that the churches who do it all seem to have the same menu for how its done and very few worship leaders know how to make it work. I hear complaints all the time about those churches who have discarded the songbooks, and refuse to sing hymns. Getting back to PSQ, they will do what they want to do, and if it works for them, wonderful. I just believe that they will find that they must go in one direction or the other.
