The Wire is terrible.
I could'nt stomach it at all. I watched one show.
Favorite show? Well that is VERY telling.
And no it is not realistic by any thing I have seen.
I would like to know who is the writers of that show.
It was downright disgusting. No redeeming anything. Nothing I could grab onto.
And I love Law and Order.
Luda is not the first rapper to say "Paint the White House Black" It's a rather common saying.
But as an American he has free speech, so I say rap on!

I challenge anyone to watch one episode of "The Wire", any episode, and then listen to a "Ludicris" song, and tell me which has the more "offensive" dialogue and themes.

The context of the Prince's military service: The American "royal family" was and remains the Bushes. McCain was not and is not President. You didn't mention Bush in your original post. Even so, both Bush Presidents "have served in the military," which was your explicit standard for condemning them.

Whether "The Wire" is McCain's favorite show or not doesn't qualify nor disqualify him from being president. And, I'm almost certain that "The Wire" producers, HBO, etc. haven't held any fund raisers for McCain.

The Wire is realistic with a few sensationalizations to make it more entertaining (Omar). Unless you've lived in Baltimore, I'm not sure what grounds you have to deny its realism. From what I have heard, Baltimore can be absolutely nightmarish.
The show's redeeming qualities could be considered its relative honesty in regards to the plight and motives of the people involved and the systemic problems of corruption.
It's not a happy show though, no, and it doesn't leave you feeling excited and happy. It's an overly complex and depressing show that leaves you a little empty inside, which isn't for the typical viewer, I suppose.
WRT Obama liking it, perhaps it shows that he's a complex guy who understand that there are rarely simple solutions to complex problems, and that the realities of the situation may make incremental victories the only plausible ones.

Some of you guys claim you're tired of hearing about him, but it's obvious some of you must Google his name three of four times a day. AND ENOUGH OF THIS ASININE EXCUSE: Well, we're just trying to get to KNOW him. NO YOU'RE NOT! Those I'm talking about were NEVER, EVER GOING TO EVEN THINK ABOUT VOTING FOR HIM EVER!!!

So, my point is, you don't have to give a reason for hating Obama's guts. Nor do you have to invent one. Voting is not an essay test, just a multiple choice one. And this year, unfortunately, "None of the above" is not an option.

I didn't say I thought it was good for McCain to like "The Wire." I only said that didn't disqualify him. Nor does Obama's choice of music and "artists." I don't really know anything firsthand about "The Wire," except what's been said here. In fact, I've never even heard of it before this thread. Maybe I just lead a sheltered life. I can't understand the lyrics to most of the rap songs, either. But from what I have heard, the Ludicris (sp?) is filthy and so is "The Wire." Filth is filth, nothing for either one to be proud of.
I don't Google Obama. Don't need to waste my time on it. I've heard enough about him to know that if he gets elected, I fear for the wellbeing of our country.

You really need to check out the show.
Children are actually main characters in this show. One season focused on Middle School Kids who were also selling drugs and literally getting away with murder. Any 12-14 year olds that watched this show (they shouldn't, of course) learned that they would be ostracized and even murdered for "snitching" (and it would be justified), that it's okay to curse out a teacher or policeman, and that the goal of every kid should be to have their own "corner" to sell drugs. Drug lords were the heroes of the community. These young actors used the most vile language of any rap artist including Ludacris. There were few happy endings. Call it reality if you like, but you can argue the same thing about Luda's lyrics.
You like McCain, and you don't like Obama. Your loyalty in trying to defend McCain's every utterance and your hatred for Obama by demonizing every syllable spoken by him makes your bias obvious. But it's not necessary to got through these gymnastics every time one of them speaks. Both candidates will make gaffes, say things we dont' agree with or take stands we are at odds with. By questioning or ignoring McCain's choice of programming, is in no way invalidating your loyalty to him as president. Likewise, by simply ignoring the fact that a black rapper likes Obama (newsflash! Ludacris is probably not the only black hip hop artist who likes Obama, so you'll be a busy person coming up with a new list every day, and expressing your outrage over their lyrics) doesn't make you an Obama "Kool-aid drinker".
Bottom line is, who cares what shows McCain watches and who cares what entertainers like Obama. In general, most of Hollywood likes liberals. There's no debating that. Are you going to list all the folks in Hollywood who likes Obama and point out all the offensive parts in movies they played, controversial stands they've taken or all the trouble they've ever been in? And then take the, "Oh dear, how can anybody vote for such an awful, evil, mean and nasty man who has THESE people as his closest, most dearest friends!", stand?

J, You're way out there on this one. I criticized Obama not once because of Ludacris' lust ballad. My criticism was aimed entirely at the rapper. You're the one who tried to turn it into a McCain v Obama entertainment war.

Sure. It's America viewed through the prism of movie magic. I don't think any Chinese person is going to mistake Friends for a documentary about American culture, but it's enjoyable, and it allows them to learn English in an entertaining way.
English is the most powerful business language in the world. It's also necessary to best understand some of the most entertaining movies and television in the world, and these movies and television are from America.
I think it's the best a lot of people are going to get as a cultural understanding, short of actually going to and living in America. And that's sadly not a realistic option for a great many people.

1) I've edited several posts in here for language. You may look back and see if your post is edited. Basically, while we're talking about a vulgar rapper, there is no reason to post his lyrics as it's a TOS 5 violation. Linking to his lyrics is, as well.
I have left the OP's link up and have left a few posts/wordings that suggest bad language, as the subject of this thread IS partially his bad language, and we can't exactly discuss it without some suggestion of the language. But please, keep it under control.
2) This thread is about LUDICRIS and his rap song, not about Obama's and McCain's entertainment choices. Let's discuss the song, please.
