I totally agree. The problem with this situation is that the collectors get new things to collect. In other words but the time you tell them to stop they aren't even calling about the same check any more they are calling about a new one. every times blue stones brother writes a bad check he uses her number so every single bad check that he has written will have a call made to her house. Ugg

I am sorry but this is just crazy to me. I don't believe that the feds are still allowing your brother to write bad checks. Yes it stinks that you are pulled into the whole mess by him hon, and I am so sorry for that. But I tell you there is a part of me that wants dishonest ones to be caught. They should be held accountable for their actions just like we are.
GregandJenny-Yes it is the same ones calling. It's very frustrating too. FOr some reason the cab company keeps calling me, not sure what is up with that either. Though I do keep telling them that what's her name doesn't live at this number. Man this chic must have done some crazy stuff to have collection agencies calling her all the time.
Oh and check this out, one of the recorded bot messages that I got when I picked up the phone said something like "this is so and so company, if this is Julie whatever, call this number. We will assume you are her unless you call this 800 number" kind of gutsy huh? I was so freaked out that some Secret Service guys would come to my door, like Men in Black..lol. I AM NOT JULIE SO AND SO....I just hate dishonesty.
Now just to deal with those Education Decisions numbers, and see if I can't rock someones world...lol. I tried that #### thing, not sure if it will work or not, but worth a shot. I will let you know if/when something happens with it. Did any of you try that too?
Bluestone-I am praying for you and your situation with your brother sweetie. I am praying for him too. He needs the help or it will catch up to him. One day he is going to want to settle down with a family, and unless he gets control of his spending etc, he won't be able to do anything. Just know that I am so sorry about what you are going through.

My brother is 42 years old, divorced, and living with a woman who does the same stuff. My parents bailed him out the whole time they were alive.
He makes payment arrangements with checkcare to pay off the checks, then does not pay or gets behind. That is when they start calling me.
He actually served time for writing checks on closed accounts and my deceased mom's account.

It happens to me about every 6 weeks I get a call for a Mark and Penny. I get the calls for a while, usually my VM picks up and so I listen to the msgs, some times I answer and I politely tell them they don't live here. The strange thing is is that I have one of the those grocery store cards and when I go there and use it (which is hardly ever) they call me or my wife by their last name. I had one lady even say oh i see you have been in here 3 times today. I was like oh ok. I said that to say that its not so much the collectors trying to cause the problems as the people who aren't being responsible. Who Mark and Penny or bluestones brother could be updating their phone number when they call to make payment arrangements again. So when you or I call them we get the phone number removed, when they call them they get the phone number put back. uggggg. Very frustrating.

We were getting calls for my husband's cousin - I'm Susan, she's Suzanne - same last name. Our number is listed, her's is not (she wasn't giving our number, but becuase the phone is listed in my name, they were finding my number). We finally bought an answering machine (saved money on voice mail) and we screen our calls. I erase 5-10 calls a week with no message - I wonder who they were?!?! My family/friends know to call my cell phone (we keep the house phone b/c of DSL).
If we do happen to answer the phone, I simply state, I'm sorry you have the wrong number. I never admit I know her (not lying, they ask if she's here, not if I know her).
Or, you could do what my son did once - answered the phone, recognized the call, passed gas on the line. Boys 
I'm on the do not call list so telemarketing calls are way low but I still get non-profit calls, which I politely say, No thanks as soon as I realize I don't want to listen and hang up. Again, answer machine/screening calls have greatly lowered the stress level!
Don't let it bug ya, as annoying as it is - life is too short.

Again, last night at 8:58 I got a call for Melissa Watkins. This time I was prepared. 'What company are you with?' No answer.... I outright told the guy that I'd been promised our number had been removed and I wanted the name of the company so I could notify the phone company. He refused to give me the information and since I don't have caller i.d. or other fancy services, I can't do anything....... yet.

Hello,
As my handle on this forum implies, I am a bill collector. I took the day off today because I was feeling ill and I had class most of the morning. Essentially I got bored and I wanted to google some things work related, hence I am here. I just finished reading up all three pages and it compelled me to make a handle here and pretty post from the other side.
****Forewarning: I am not one of your brother's creditors. It is insane to assume that I am considering there is no way for anyone here to assume anyone's identity based off handles.****
I can easily see your frustration here about you getting calls for your brother's debts. Let give you best advice right now: Get with your brother and make him call all of his creditors and give updated information. That includes those in collections and those not. It really pays off to have him to do this.
Next, I notice some people have been giving you advice to where to poke jokes at the bill collector. I will let you know from experience(not from personal, but from others) that it is wrong route to go on. If your brother has some aggressive collectors and they here that, it normally puts the idea in their head that they need to continue calls to show they aren't backing down. Furthermore, it also helps assume -YOU- are your brother. Collections is all about persistence.
Another way to stop the calls is to literally pick up the phone and advise them it is a wrong number. Be willing to give them updated on the actual debtor(in this case your brother) if it is available. If you feel you are ratting out your brother, then think of the positive: At least you aren't receiving anymore calls.
Third, these calls that you are receiving for your brother are in attempt to actual obtain location information. Location Information is the collector's term for updated contact information on the person who owes the debt. If that is the case, revert back to providing some current info and humbly request to not be contacted again.
Next, if your brother happens to be in a collection agency that runs off of an automated dialer system(computer making calls with computed message telling you to hold for a collector to get on the call) simply ask for a manager and revert back to either: refusing to provide contact info and request to be removed from the records, or providing contact info and requesting to be removed from the records.
As for paying to make a call to the collection agency, most if not ALL agencies to have a Toll-Free number which completely negates you of charges. It is extremely expensive for agencies to maintain that number so people without unlimited long distance don't have to worry about getting charged just to call and advise of a wrong number.
In closing, I hope most of my advice here has helped you out quite a bit. This was a good 30 minute break from doing my homework, so now I'm going to hop back on that and continue with my studies.

I had a similar problem last December when an ex-acquaintance of mine had apparently used my phone number on some checks that bounced. They called several times one day and no matter how I explained that I didn't have any contact with this person, etc, they said they would continue to call until the debt was paid.
I downloaded some free software called PhoneTray free (does require caller id, but it sounds like you have that). It runs on our main desktop, which is plugged into the phone line. When any call comes through as out-of-area, private, n/a or anonymous, the call is disconnected with the 3 beeps and the "I'm sorry, the number you have dialed has been disconnected" message. You can also manually add numbers if you know what they are (sometimes they do show on the id) for the same result. The phone rings once and then they get the tones and message. This has almost completely stopped the calls we get, and now I'm using it to block political calls that display the number, and unwanted charity calls. We're down to maybe 1 unwanted call every 2 or 3 weeks that sneaks thru (and then I immediately add them to the do not call log).

my husband does collections for a living and the one thing i have learned that if you are getting these phone calls what you need to do is to write a letter
of cease and disest. (not sure if i got the spelling right). afterwards it is illegal to call that certian number. now you would have to do this for every number they have of yours. it is true that they may still call but just get their manager and tell them.
so tell them over the phone to cease and disest that number and get their address and get it in writing.

My sister is sometimes a deadbeat, which is really annoying because she lives off alimony, child support, and a ginormous trust fund. And yet she still pays no bills until someone is ready to sue her. She gives my number not only to bill collectors, but to her son's teachers and coaches, to men she randomly hooks up with, and just about anyone else. I guess she thinks I'll take messages for her. Here's the kicker: I live in NYC and she lives in San Francisco.
So now here's what I do: any time my phone rings and they want Sis, regardless of who they are, I tell them she's in the shower right now with the plumber and the electrician; can she call you back? Surprisingly, they almost never leave a number!

My older brother's ex-wife gave everyone our phone number. She used to anyway. Then she found out that my sister was working for AT&T. She figured out that my sister could easily track her down and decided that she didn't want to mess with our family anymore. This phone number has been in our house for 70 years or so. We've changed area codes quite a few times, but we're not planning on changing phone numbers.

You have my sympathies! Debt collectors can be incredibly rude and persistent. (Even when you're the innocent party!)
And I agree that changing your number can be such a hassle. But, if you decide to change it, under no circumstance should you give your brother the number. And if you call him from your phone, he'll get the number from a caller ID. (that's how my step-son got my number again!)
I kept thinking I could trust my step-son (who was 35!) and--after a long period of time--I'd let him have the number again. Then he would give it to everyone he owed money to and the whole cycle would start again. So, I finally refused to give it to him. But, my husband called him and he got it from the caller ID.

Thats a tough one but I think you need to show tough love in this instance and give the creditors your brothers address if he doesnt have a phone number...I also think you need to check you credit files and make sure you're not connected financially in any way.
