I'd like to know what exactly causes us to bloat and how we can remedy it. I know that high amounts of salt and not enough water can cause you to bloat. Does hormones play a part? Is it a lack of something in your diet other than water? Is there a quick remedy?

If you have an intolerance to wheat, that can cause bloating too.

theres bloating from water retention (usually sodium or hormones) and then theres bloating from foods that you can't process

could be wheat, corn, dairy, excess carbs, sugar alcohols, anything you have an intolerance too. The 100% whole wheat pasta doubles the size of my stomach.

Only thing is an elimination diet or a visit to a doctor to rule out food intolerances but most of them will probably test for your for IBS.

Then they can't cure it if you do have IBS.

Pork has to be another one since it's digests slowly.

Lack of fibre and 'bad' fats can also cause bloating.

Junk foods and drinks (including caffiene and artificial additives) will be a prime candidate, given the ingredients in most of them.

Keep a food (including drinks) diary for at least a week and note times you feel the bloating is the worst and see if there's a connection between that and the foods you eat.

Spicy foods, if you are talking about stomach bloating.

You may want to look into introducing probiotics into your diet.

Some meds can cause bloating for me.

It depends what kind of bloating (like when and where). There are actually many reasons why it might happen. Mine (that can make me look like I'm a good way through a pregnancy) is due to gastroparesis. If I eat too much at once or eat anything hard to digest, I can seriously balloon. Others bloat due to water retention that can be due to too much or too little water intake, too much caffeine, too much salt, etc. Still others find it's a food reaction, sometimes just something that's hard for them to digest other times it's in the realm of allergies or at least intolerances. Are there patterns that match up to what you're eating or drinking? What about any other symptoms?

Some people are more susceptible to bloating when eating a lot of grains. I am, and my daughter is.

Also be aware that prolonged bloating (2-3 weeks) is something that an MD should look into.
I'm thinking about ovarian cancer. One of the first signs could be this. Are you having pelvic pain? Low back pain? Or abnormal menstrual bleeding?
I'm just sayin......

It most likely for me is that I just need to eat healthier. Also, taking enzyme supplements may help if you have an off day of eating junk. The added enzymes can help to digest some foods more properly.

Fibriods, can cause bloating.

Fennel can help bloating.

Wonder_Woman -> RE: Bloating...a closer look (8/16/2008 7:51:49 PM)

I have found that soy products cause major bloating for me. Also, carbonated beverages, dairy, cabbage, and of course those infamous beans. And once upon a time I actually tried SlimFast. Very bad idea, even the nondairy stuff.

agapetos, fennel helps? How would one prepare that? Eat it raw or cooked, or does it matter?

I confess, the book didn't say, it just said it helped. I'd say as long as it wasn't cooked to death, it'd help!

All I know is the last time my husband was bloated, his intestines were tied in a knot and everything he ate, went in, but never made its way out until a good part of his intestines were removed.

Pulses and legumes cause lots of flatulence and bloating.

agapetos -> RE: Bloating...a closer look (8/17/2008 9:30:41 PM)

If you eat them regularly and soak and rinse them properly and don't use the cooking liquid, they'll cause less problems.

Cloak -> RE: Bloating...a closer look (8/17/2008 9:41:50 PM)

I agree even tho if someone is really keen about avoiding bloating and flatulence; they are advised to avoid them when being with public or intimate get together.! [;)]
