Actually, your voices probably were a good blend and balanced each other with her power and your light voice because of coloration and depth, if she was capable of choral singing... and by "capable" I mean had been taught to blend with others and put aside her "solo voice." And by "taught" I mean taught by someone who knew what they were speaking about. It never ceases to amaze me, with as popular as music is in our culture, how few professionals really understand what they are teaching and how many teach technique that works against a group of singers instead of for them... Like allowing spitzu to feel redundant. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a conductor allow a powerfully voiced person to dominate a group when they weren't a soloist in the piece of music. I can't tell you how many times I've heard incorrect pronounciation taught. I could go on and on...
And then there are those who aren't pros putting their two cents in... What a muddle!!

I agree. Have you ever seen "A Christmas Without Snow"? It's about a church choir that did Handel's "Messiah". There was one character, a sorprano, who sang very loudly with a lot of vibrato and thought she was the most important member of the choir. When the director told her that there were no solo parts in that chorus, she left in a huff.

This is very frustrating . . . . . and it seems to take place a lot in church choirs (at least smaller ones, not like mega choirs, lol) where no one wants to step on anyone's toes . . . . . . 
Currently, on our worship team (of 4-5) we have one woman who has a distinct first soprano voice. She probably doesn't realize it, but . . . . she stands out (understatement, lol). I'm not the worship leader (we don't really have one right now) but I wish I had the guts to nicely suggest that we all work on blending our voices . . . . . . again, there are those toes in the way, LOL

I know... I wish I had a dime for all the times I have been reminded that church choirs are volunteer and you can't say anything that may make a volunteer mad. But aren't we Christians wanting to give our best to God? Aren't we Christians who know we're not perfect and have a lot to learn? And Director who knows his stuff can control the choir without stepping on toes... but you have to have a director for that and a lot of churches are getting away from having real leadership in song. Sure, there is someone picking the songs, but no one setting the pace and keeping it all together. That's not the best we can offer to God. I get very frustrated by it, too, as you can tell.
I'd like that "A Christmas Without Snow."

Well, our teacher definitely knew what he was doing, and everything blended well. Just my personal preference/issue, I guess.
