ORIGINAL: Rufas2000 quote:
Love pre-Mr. Roboto Styx "Pieces of Eight"my fav from them. Indeed, although I have to give the slight edge to The Grand Illusion. IMHO that and Pieces of Eight are their high points. The one thing on "Pieces of Eight" is that you could tell they discovered that they had young teenage fans and kind of tailored the music a little bit for them. Not so much so that they lost the adult crowd, it was still great. You'll note the band refers to themselves by first name only on the credits (example: Dennis: Vocals, Keyboards, Tommy: Guitar, Vocals etc.) as opposed to the more traditional full name. They kinda went hog wild with the theatrics (The Grand Illusion had a bit of that but "Pieces of Eight" went full bore with many pleasing results and some a bit over the top). I don't think its a bad thing but its something I picked up right away. The overall concept of "money ain't the answer" certainly is not kids stuff. Speaking of "Pieces of Eight" (and to blow a hole in my teenybopper theory) am I the only one that thinks "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" is about becoming a male prostitute? I would explain the symbolism I'm thinking but would rather not violate TOS. I wasn't a fan of "Cornerstone", liked "Paradise Theater" then after that meh. Funny story: I heard "The Best of Times" years before I heard "Rockin' The Paradise". Imagine my surprise when "...Paradise" kicked it after having nearly the same intro as the "The Best of Times". quote:
Fooling Yourself/The Grand Illusion-Styx Another good double dip. I'm thinking not intentional. Seems "The Grand Illusion" got more airplay on rock radio than "Fooling Yourself". Ah, Styx, good stuff. Its possible, however I was very young when it came out and I was only listening to Top 40 radio at the time. Oh btw, I thought that the B-side to Mr. Roboto was Snowblind instead? Ok, I remembered 2 more here: - Always A Woman/Vienna-Billy Joel
- Make Me Smile/Color My World-Chicago
- We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper-The Beatles
