Hopefully this won't be too close to Maverick's topic about "why we homeschool." We are going to homeschool again after sending the kids to public school last year. We know we want to homeschool but want to actually post our "Homeschool Vision" so we don't lose the "vision" that God has given us. What would you put as your "vision?"

Rick Boyer, an incredibly prolific scholar and father, adopted this mission statement: "To raise a self-perpetuating godly generation."

My own passion? As a linguist and a lover of the English language, I love to put prepositions where they belong, especially on the ends of sentences. So my "vision statement" is --

I want to be in on what God is up to.

Home schooling is part of a total Reformation package. God is rebuilding His people, one family at a time, with even bigger goals in mind. God works through His Word, as we consider it and integrate it into our lives, day by day, year by year, decade by decade, generation by generation.

I haven't put my vision down in a few short sentence before. But, after thinking about, my vision is really tied into the reasons why we homeschool. So maybe when you are wording your vision, you could look at your reasons and somehow word it from that. It is my reasons for homeschooling that keep me from throwing in the towel.

My vision is another godly generation carrying the torch of God's Word into the future.

I envision strong families made up of individuals who love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength and then in turn serve one another in love.

My hope is that like Abraham, whom God knew would "command his children after him", God would find me faithful and that my obedience (feeble and pitiful as it sometimes is) would result in more and more voices lifted up in praise to Jesus, the only one worthy of our loyalty and love.

I write this with fear and trembling, as I have seen so many home school families in my twelve plus years of home schooling, and not all of our children choose to follow the Lord wholeheartedly. I most recently almost lost my daughter to a life of heart-ache as she was planning to rebel against the Lord. Some days she seems so committed to Jesus, and others she seems such a fool.

In the end our children have minds of their own, and will make their own choices.

But may I be found faithful: an honest witness and a diligent teacher, a kind wife and mother who serves in love and a tireless intercessor.

An R-rated movie created by a graduate of Calvin College who learned his craft as a pornographer radically affected our approach to child rearing. It's a meditation on the story of the prodigal son, that carefully portrays all five points of TULIP Calvinism. Vicky and I talked for hours after watching this 1980 flick.

Bottom line: it is not our controls, but the grace of God, that apprehends and transforms our children.

Still, the odds are in our favor. More than 90% of the home school kids want to raise their kids "in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."

By contrast, more than 90% of the evangelical kids who attend public school walk away from God when they grow up.There may be some who feel heroically challenged to gamble their children's souls in a game that is loaded against them, where 9 out of 10 rolls of the dice come up snake eyes. My faith is not that flamboyant. I'd prefer the quieter, safer course, of growing in God with my kids, close enough so that they can see God at work in my life. Discipling them (catechism, for example) also imposes a self-discipline upon me that keeps me humble before my God. Who, praise His Name, is kind, gracious, and powerful.

Wow! This is enough to make me keep pressing on... not giving up even when the road is bumpy and seems too hard...

This cannot be verified. There is no source for this. I have tried to find the source, but don't think there is one.

I like this!




I also have a dream ... a dream that one day, people in all countries will be able to choose whichever method they wish for educating their children ... without fear of persecution from anyone -- family, friends, "the system", government, etc.

I have met zero parents who regretting home schooling their kids -- but all too many parents in tears, who entrusted the souls of their children to Caesar, and didn't realize, until too late, that public education is religious education.

Then, there was a home school girl I know who, at the age of 19, took her mother and father out to lunch -- on separate occasions -- to thank them for raising her the way they did.

To train up our children in the way they should go so that when they are old they will not depart from it. To raise them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Simply put, we want our girls to serve God and others in all they do and to be Godly young women who raise Godly children in the future and carry the message of Christianity to many generations to follow.

Well, we finally had a family meeting and all sat down to write what we feel our vision for homeschool should be. My husband, 7 yo ds, 11 yo dd and I all wrote things and I combined them all in one vision. Here it is:

Our Homeschool Vision

We would like to learn in a relaxed atmosphere that will include worshipping and glorifying God. The education that we would like is
based on God and faith which is supplied through the parents that
God provided for Sara and Scott.
We enjoy being together as a family, learning without rushing, and
doing our work to the best of our ability. We are going to try to listen
to and respect each other and obey our parents.
We thank God for providing the possibility to home school.

I typed this up and we are going to read it every so often so we keep
the vision.

Thanks! We had a heck of a year last year because we "lost" our vision.
We don't want that to happen again!
