Christina do you have an EpiPen in the house?

I had escalating allergic reactions to bee's as a kid and we almost had to use the pen one time when I got stung on my thigh. It was scary for both me and my mom.

I honestly should have one now but it's been years since I've been stung.

Baby Chat... My baby girl is getting big. Her face is changing and her personality is coming out super strong. It's cute and scary at the same time. I love watching her discover stuff, like her voice! and her eyebrows, oh my they move.

Too precious.

something I thought of the other day.

when do you guys get a medical supply going?

I mean like baby aspirin/Tylenol and gas soothers? I'm torn with getting it all now and waiting until we need it.. but who wants to go to the store at 3 am when it's bound to hit??

arg.

Chamomile for gas... is it just straight tea? any packaged cham tea? you make as directed and just dip pacifier into it?

want to make sure that's in my head before I need it.

Brandy, it may not even "hit" at all. My ds had it, but my dd never did.

And yes, with the chamomile tea - you can make it, cool it and dip the dummy in, or give a little (5ml) by spoon or dropper. You could keep some of that in anyway - it's not as if it's going to eat anything. (sorry, just realised that was a weird expression of my mother's, lol)

Kara - that's funny about your friend knowing Captain Hepette! I always wonder what these people are like in real life (especially those people from 4 Square!)

Brandy - when I had Akeelah I bought a few things I somehow amassed all these samples of medical stuff (Tempra, Baby Tylenol, etc). I didn't worry too much about getting anything until we needed it. Then we needed gripe water....and we spent the day driving around from West Indian store to West Indian store (because it's something people swear by where Dh comes from) and we couldn't find it. Tired of looking, I went to the pharmacy across the street to buy diaper cream, and there was the gripe water!!! So with our next kids, there are a few things I may buy ahead of time, even if it doesn't get used it won't be that big of a waste of money.

Then I put baking soda and water on it, and that seemed to help and gave him benedryl.

next time, if you can, try using tobacco (from the inside of a cigarette or chewing tobacco, etc). It will work better then anything at relieving the initial pain from a sting. (I keep some tobacco in the first aid kit just for this...it really works. If you are ever around a tobacco farm or in the woods when it happens, using the leaves works just as good too)

I personally like the scouting motto of "BE PREPARED"......so I always am!!!! (you should see my diaper bag...I always have everything imaginable in there and always so small that people are shocked at what I can puill out at any given time...lol.)

Do you ladies think the well baby visits are necessary? Mary is due for her 4 mo visit. We get her vaccines through the health dept so at her dr apts they just take a look at her, weigh/measure, and ask where she is in her devlopments. I need to make her shot apt, but I'm not sure if I want to do the well baby visit.

nope....we don't do them (of course we don't vax either, so there really is no reason for us to take them)

Yeah, I'm thinking as long as she is growing, and hitting the "milestones" then I don't think I will do them. I guess if I have a real concern, then I will take her in.

We don't have one. Do you think I'll need one the second time? I heard the first time is not so bad (it wasn't, just a little hives on his leg), but with each bee sting, the allergic reaction gets worse each time. Our emergency room is only like a mile away, and it's free for the kids to go there, so I was thinking next time (hopefully there won't ever be one) I'd just wait and see how it goes and take him to the ER if it's bad.

Sarah, hopefully we won't have any tobacco next time...hehehe....Hopefully there won't be a next time too.

yeah that's what we do. I know how our kids grow....and we have moved so much that taking them in just to know the dr or the dr know them really isn't an option for us (we wouldn't hardly see the same person twice anyway b/c of how the military dr's offices work). Some dr's don't agree with our perfectly legal choice to not vax....and some think that all parents need to be "checked up on" to make sure they are parenting "the right way" (you know...not spanking/punishing cause it is so "harmful" to kids). Anyway, I have run into so many nosy dr's who want to run our lives and how we do things that I just got over them a long time ago and choose to not go in instead (except when we really need to). Once a year we have to go in to keep their records up to date with weight/height checks anyway, so we just do those...we don't do monthly baby checks.

yeah hopefully!!!! Like I said though, we keep a small package of chewing tobacco in the first aid kit. Believe me, with kids there WILL at some point be a "next time" (esp with boys!!!)!!!

Christina if it happens at home next time and is still just on his foot you have the ER to go to..

For me, the higher on my body I get stung the worse the reaction. And when it happened at camp that was scary.

I would also recommend Benadryl in your purse if you don't get an Epi Pen.

I probably am overly cautious due to my history but you can always see how he does next time and go from there.

I just thought about how Isabel may react.. hmm. Good question for Dr end of the month at her first shot appt.

We went to Mommy and Me today. The topic was romance. It was very interesting. Hearing what some of the other women were saying reminded me of how blessed I am to have Chris as a husband and my mom so close by and willing to watch David so we can go out. I have a new friend named Lisa. I met her at the LLL meetings when we were pregnant. She also goes to the Mommy and Me meetings. Her little boy is 8 weeks older than David and they both weigh 13 pounds 5 ounces!!

Jacob got his first tooth!

It's just hovering really. I felt it come out late yesterday afternoon, but then by bedtime it had gone back down. And then it was back out this morning. But I think I'll count yesterday as the day.

Yay for teeth, how is he handling it Tammy?

Nath had another night of rotten sleep waking 2 hourly. I am starting to doubt whether dairy was the culprit at all. Its 3.5 weeks now since I cut it out. I am so tired. Last night I was like "right, that's it, you are starting to be weaned and on to soy or rice milk buddy". I don't want to change my diet again. I also don't want him latched onto my breast forever. Yes i know, drama queen, but to me, at this moment, that's what it feels like.

unfortunately if you don't find what the culprit is, then changing him to formula could make things worse.
What is your next move of eliminating? Maybe it will be easier then the dairy

I wouldn't put him on formula, he is 10.5 months, so can't he just go on some soy or rice milk? I mean I will just start gradually weaning him I think. I really can't do it much longer. I have been doing it for so long when I didn't want to in the first place. I just want a break and my hubby to understand. And to eat cheese, and to sleep more than 2 hours.
Well the other one I could do is soy, I guess that's fairly easy. Wheat would be the one i don't want to do as I eat that alot and I don't like other foods and its winter so salads and fruit aren't exactly appetising. But like I said I would much rather just start to wean.
If I ask the paed for a allergy testing, what do they do? Will it hurt Nath?

weaning him will only allow you to eat those things, but you will still have to figure out what is affecting him....and like you said, it could be soy and yet you are saying you would put him on soy or rice milk. I personally would say eliminate soy from the list FIRST...then when you know it isn't soy or dairy, wean him. At least you will then know what you can feed him "safely".

yes I know, what I said was dumb,. Today is going to be a pooey day.
I might gradually add dairy to my diet over the next few days and see what happens.

I don't know why I am bawling my eyes out. Far out.

nope...not dumb, just not well thought out. I took your post as you just *venting* of sorts...and venting doesn't always have to make sense. I was just trying to point that out to you so that you could put a little more reality in your thinking....kwim?

quote:

I would say at this point there hasn't been anything definitive, so go back on dairy and eliminate something else. Soy would be good since you said you would want to put him on soy milk or rice milk when you quit nursing. That would give you 6 weeks or so til his birthday, and about the length of time you would need to determine if it is soy....then by a year you could quit nursing. See, there is an end to this road....and it's really not THAT far away!!!! Time to start preparing for the end.

Oh man, you should of heard my boo hoo when I read "time to start preparing for the end". LOL what a sight I would be right now, pj's on, eyes all puffy...
Thanks

Thanks Brandy. When you get stung, do you just stab yourself right away with the EpiPen or do you wait and see how it goes first? Maybe I will get one, and just see how the next sting goes before administering it. Is it a 1 size fits all, or do they have different doses for different weights?

i just had a thought
what if he is allergic to like soy and dairy? so i bring dairy back in, take soy out and nothing happens? will an allergist be able to work it out too? how do they work it out anyway? I have been having soy butter in things though and he hasn't been as bad. What if it is just something physical too. Oh, my brain cant cope with it all... too many what ifs.
