In bible times, and even up until the 16th century when Guttenberg developed a printing press, all texts were hand written. Owning a complete bible was way beyond the economic reach of any but the absolute wealthiest. For example, today if you want a hand written scroll with jus the first five books of the bible (Genesis - Deuteronomy) it will cost you about $3000-$5000. You can do the math for all 66 books.
So in those days the only way was to HEAR the scriptures being read. Paul instructs Timothy to not forsake the public reading of scriptures for that very reason.
Hearing is just fine.
But wasn't that BECAUSE so few were literate and not because of some virtue in having it read to you?
There is nothing wrong with listening to the scriptures, but as has been mentioned, there are many times when reading that a verse, phrase, or even word catches my attention and I pause to meditate and, often, search further in other passages to understand something clearer or deeper. When someone is doing linear reading and I'm engaged with divided attention (driving), I cannot give the Word the attention it deserves. However, I will concede that it's far, far better than listening to most anything else on the radio.

No, quit being paranoid... I'd say it depends on the person. Some people are really bad at reading, and listening is better for them.

Swimkid, If one's primary mode to read is listening, via audio recording, or via a screen reading program out of necessity, then, no would be my answer. More important is what results from reading or listening over time in your life. Remember, Jesus tought verbally, the printing press wasn't around until the 1600s, and even before then, young Jewish children were "required" to memorize the first 5 books backward and forward. So, to each his or her own is my understanding, and by the way, like your caption at the end! May His word not return void..

You might get more out of READING the Bible
(notes that expand &/or help you understand).
BUT if it comes between spending little to no time in God's Word or listening to it, then put your hearing cap on.

Their literacy rate in NT times was higher than the US today, in the high 90s %. Everyone grew up in the synagogues and learned to read from the Torah and haftara scrolls there. Outside of Jerusalem and in the diaspora, the rabbis wrote their own paraphrases in Aramaic called targums. These were read and studied by all.

Have you ever asked yourself what you are reading your bible FOR? Here's what I mean-if your "goal" is to check bible reading off your list (regardless of it's affect), then your first response might be appropriate (you're cheating), but if your goal is to better understand the things of God, then how you do that is immaterial-reading the bible physically, hearing it on tape, listening to a faithful sermon which expounds on the things of the Word, all of these can have a meaninful impact-if that's what you seek.

I think it all boils down to one thing -- heart-itude.
If your intent is merely to "get through my Bible reading assignment" then whether you're reading or listening doesn't really matter because your heart is not in it.
Check your motivation. That's your answer.
