Hormonally I'm doing good. Honestly I havent had time to be depressed and sad. The first day here was hard...no sleep, and not even being able to touch my baby, but I am doing better. I know this is the best place for him right now.

I can't imagine how hard this must be for you. But I (as well as many others here and IRL) am praying for all three of you. Even though you're still on your adrenaline high there will probably be some sort of hormonal let down (not talking so much depression as just weepiness) and if/when it comes we're all here for you.

quote:

Yeah, my nips are starting to get sore, so I need to use my lanolin a little more, I guess i didnt think it would be as bad without a baby latching on, but I am learning otherwise....and i hope the new nipple shield thingys will help too.

Yes! Definitely slather that stuff on...before and after every nursing as well as after every shower.

quote:

I am also going tomorrow to find a good bra or two...any tips or anything? I hadnt even begun to think about nursing bras and stuff. There is a store here for breastfeeding we plan to go to it tomorrow. We are going to look at one of those hands free things...I'm having trouble pumping both sides at once and I am going back to work Monday and would like to have it figured out.

Well...Babies R Us has nursing bras but I didn't prefer those so much (underwires and bra fabric tucking involved during nursing/pumping)...but they're fairly cheap so you could buy one in the mean time. I really really like the Bravado Original Bra. I bought two this time around with Jael and I don't think I'll be buying another kind ever again.

Someplace sells pumping bras. Someone else might know more about them. The cones on the pump fit right in there, so you can do hands-free pumping!

I went through several brands of nursing bras, and I have to say that I love the Target ones the best too. Every single other bra I had, the wire snapped after a few washes. I have Target bras that are over 18 months old, and still fine. I wear the underwire ones, and really like them.

Erin, I think I smell different when nursing too!!! With Reagan, I though the odor went away after several months, but I still smell it now with Lincoln (6 months). I think it's because it's summer. I think it's milk, mixed with sweat from larger breasts and the work of lactating. Don't be surprised if the smell gets stronger when you start nursing Isaac. The skin to skin contact may increase the sweating, and you'll have baby saliva on your breasts contributing to the odor. It's not bad, just something you notice. Don't try to hide it with perfume, it might irritate the baby.

I've noticed it too Erin. It's an 'earthy' smell I guess. Not pungent, or gross. I rather like it. Isn't that wierd? LOL It's a very natural smell...and I guess it smells feminine to me.
Don't worry about it, I would be sure you're the only one who notices it.

Erin- also remember that comfy is most important, but in a few weeks/months when you are not so sore, etc. pretty will be important too. I made the mistake of only getting cotton, serviceable bras with my first (comfy, breathe, etc.) and it did take a toll in the bedroom- I still have my comfy ones, but now I'm fifty/fifty between pretty and serviceable and comfy, plain ones. I think for your situation, go to the bf store and get one or two of those to start and see if you like them- if you only wash and line dry, they usually hold up well- I have some that are 5 years old!

Check that out... I started a club... See, I *am* cooler online than irl...

Well, I've joined the club too, but I'm not sure how much longer I'll get to be a part (maybe we could create emeritus status for those of us who support nursing, but aren't anymore). Kenna baby's only nursing one or two times every couple of days now. She's also weaning off of formula too. It's exciting, but still kind of sad. It's been three years since I haven't been either pregnant or nursing, so I'm really looking forward to my body being my own again. But then, I think about the fact that she's my last one and she's weaning and I'll never nurse a precious little one again and I just want to cry!

Erin, glad to hear everything's going so well! Before you spend a ton of money on a hands free system, check this out at kellymom.com. My girlies are quite large (I'm a DD when nursing) and this is the set up I used to pull of hands-free pumping.

HERE and HERE from the Bravado site
HERE from another site (a little more info, and a size chart)
HERE from Amazon's site...LLL Bra

interesting method Kat!! (it wouldn't work with the kind of clasps on my bras though)

Thanks for that info Kat. I'll have to try that.

RIght now its kind of cool...its hard to hold both things on at the same time so hubby and I work together on the pumping right now. Its like we are both doing it for Isaac, he helps me hold them, then he lables the bottles and puts them in the cooler while I clean up.

I cant use my new breast shields yet since I want to sterlize them and dont have any way to here.

We are planning to go the the shop here at the hospital let them fit me for a bra and such and then go shopping someplace like Target and see what we can find there.

Erin, I'm so glad to hear your pumping successfully! That's awesome.

Milk smell . . . . . it's a "sweet" smell. I kinda miss it! I love nursing. People also comment on how babies who are BF have that "sweet" smell. It is really cool! I remember my husband telling me I smell sweet. It's so unique.

Thanks for those links Sarah.

Kat, what a cool idea.....man I sure wish I would have thought of that when I was pumping and working. There were so many instances where I had to get up, hold paper towels on my boobs to push a button to let in the newspaper guy or the garbage man.

I love my Bravado bras!! I have 2 of the original bras and 1 nursing tank.

Instead of buying a hands free pumping bra I bought a sports bra at Wal-Mart. I found one that hooks in the front, but I think any would work, and I cut slits in them for the breast shields. The bra has to be pretty tight or everything will start to fall as the bottles get heavy.

Here is my favorite bra. I have this in black and white. It looks like it may be itchy, but it ISN'T. It's SO comfortable, sexy, and easy snap. I Highly recommend it. I'm trying to see what other colors they have to see if I can get another.

Black Gillian Bra

I am looking at this one to buy now: looks comfy and semi sexy too

But, I think I'm going to get this one because it's white and I can wear it with any shirt. White one

Jae, I have one of the first bra you linked to, but I found it didn't wash well at all. I only washed it once, and never wore it again.

I have several of the other one you linked to. My Target only has it in Black & Nude (they call it Mochachino or something), but no white. I have 4 of them, and they are about 18 months old and have worn very well in the wash.

I'm as pasty white as they come, and I wear the mochachino under white shirts. Proper fashion 'rules' call for a nude colored bra under white items anyway. If you care about those rules, that is

I ended up with a Bravado bra, a Medela sleep bra, and a Melinda G bra.

I also bought some Lily Padz and they are working great. I have sensitive skin and the disposable ones were making me uncomfortable. But I think they are really worth the price...very nice.

That last bra looks so comfy, Erin!

I have never heard of a sleep bra before. I usually wear those tank tops with the built in support and adjust the straps so it's low cut so I can just pull it under my boob. Those tanks come three in a pack at Wal*Mart really cheap, so you can get them all stained with breastmilk. And then just wear a sweater over them when you're out since I wouldn't wear them by themselves in public.

Yeah, I didnt think I had to have a sleep bra, but the price was good, so we went for it.

Quick question that I think I know the answer to....is it normal for one breast to give a lot more milk than the other? One of mine constantly drips and the other doesnt. And when I pump the same one gives quiet a bit more milk and it "squirts" where the other drips.

Yup yup...totally normal. If it's still like that by the time you can start giving boob-to-mouth nursing, put Isaac on the side that produces less first. Although, I don't think it really matters too much if you don't mind temporarily having a slightly larger breast than the other.

What kind of medicine can I take for nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea? David still gets mostly pumped breastmilk and I'm not sure of what is safe to take and what's not.
