cow451 -> Manson Family Member Might Get Compassionate Parole (7/15/2008 4:37:13 PM)

Charles Manson family follower and convicted murderer Susan Atkins is terminally ill and has a few months to live. She is disabled with brain cancer and unable to care for herself. Caring for her in prison will cost well over $1 million. On the other hand, she was one of the killers in the 1969 murders committed by the Manson Family. LINK

Susan Atkins' doctors and officials at the women's prison in Corona made the compassionate release request in March because of her deteriorating health. Atkins also has had her left leg amputated and is paralyzed on her right side, her husband and attorney, James Whitehouse, told the California Board of Parole Hearings.

WesP -> RE: Manson Family Member Might Get Compassionate Parole (7/15/2008 4:42:05 PM)

If she is that debilitated, then it does not matter where she is kept. They may as well let her go home. She certainly cannot enjoy too much in that state, so what would be the harm?

EStan -> RE: Manson Family Member Might Get Compassionate Parole (7/15/2008 4:53:35 PM)

My knee-jerk reaction to this was, "None of the Manson family's victims died with dignity - why should she?" OTOH, as Wes said, if she's going to die anyway, shortly it seems, why not let her die at home? If she's repented of her sins and accepted Christ as her Savior, she has nothing to fear in death.

HighPlainsDrifter -> RE: Manson Family Member Might Get Compassionate Parole (7/15/2008 5:02:51 PM)

I say let her go home and die with her family.

stampinlady -> RE: Manson Family Member Might Get Compassionate Parole (7/15/2008 5:08:36 PM)

She needs to finish her sentence in prison. I think mercy has already been shown to her by not executing her some years ago.

blessedinnyc -> RE: Manson Family Member Might Get Compassionate Parole (7/15/2008 5:29:32 PM)

What about all of the medical costs that the state will accrue treating her?

If she goes home, it could save the state a few hundred thousand. Surely there are some conservatives who would like to save some money on treating criminals.

rcjames -> RE: Manson Family Member Might Get Compassionate Parole (7/15/2008 5:30:20 PM)

She should stay in prison until she dies; period.

Thanks
RC

Amen.

And why spend all that money on her???

No choice (assuming that was a serious question). Prisoners must get basic medical care by law. Basic medical care for a terminally ill person is quite sustantial. To deny her such would be clearly "cruel and unusual punishment".

EStan -> RE: Manson Family Member Might Get Compassionate Parole (7/15/2008 6:59:37 PM)

Her "compassionate release" request has been denied.

What would you call what she did to the people she murdered?

My sentiments exactly.

I am old enough to remember Charles Manson's face on the evening news. And the gruesome details of the murder and how they murdered Sharon Tate and her 8 and 1/2 month old baby. She's been able to live out her life to its natural end. If she didn't want the consequences of her actions in her earthly life, then she shouldn't have done it and accept them like the good thief did in Luke.

"Atkins' medical treatment and paying for prison guards to watch over her has cost state taxpayers more than $1.4 million since March, according to the corrections department." (From article from OP - emphasis added)

Sounds like she's getting better medical treatment than she could afford with on the outside with no health insurance. So, it seems to me that the taxpayers will be flitting the bill in jail or not. Or does she automatically become eligible for Medi-care amd Medi-caid upon release?

Excellent point. I've known people with real jobs and real insurance that had cancer and still couldn't afford treatments, pain meds, etc.

I guess we know what we have to do to be well taken care of, don't we?

Just as long as I don't become your first victim! [:D][:D]

No choice (assuming that was a serious question). Prisoners must get basic medical care by law. Basic medical care for a terminally ill person is quite substantial. To deny her such would be clearly "cruel and unusual punishment".

Murder. That is apparently the basis for the denial, along with the publicity. Parole Board definitely not a liberal group. Additionally I recall that Atkins was the least remorseful of the three. Van Houten and Krenwinkle have both been quite open about their remorse and have been model inmates.

I was referring to the three given life sentences. Squeaky was not tried for the murders.

After some homework, I came across several references to Atkin's being born-again since 1974. She, too has apparently been a very good prisoner in terms of behavior. She may have been more contentious with the legal system, esp. the Parole Board. That certainly didn't help her case. The attorneys are appealing the rejection but she will probably die before the case gets through the system.

Ah, okay. For the whole group, though, I think she is still the True Believer.

I sincerely hope your sources are correct about her being born-again. It's definitely possible for people to be forgiven for the most horrific of circumstances...and only thru and by the grace and mercy of God.

I'm sure, that if I personally knew Miss Atkins, it would be hard to not want her release. However, if she truly is born-again, she understands the difference between being forgiven and bearing the consequenses of ones actions.

The good news for her, is that she will only have to deal with the earthly consequences of her sin. Once in the presence of God, she will have her eternal rewards! [:)]

rcjames -> RE: Manson Family Member Might Get Compassionate Parole (7/16/2008 3:00:01 PM)

Seriously, I do hope that Ms. Atkins has found Christ and has repented, but as for staying in jail; yes.

She should be shown the same mercy she showed Sharron Take as she knifed her to death, cut out her haby and cut it to pieces.

Oh yea, I forgot; liberals would not mind the baby being cut out of the mom and destroyed; silly me.

Anyway she needs to stay where she is.

Thanks
RC

Here is a link to her 2005 Parole Hearing Transcript. It makes for interesting reading. It's clear that she will be denied no matter what, so the whole process is just going through the motions. LINK

I guess the fact that someone who was sentenced first to be executed and then commuted to life without parole (emphasis added) got a parole hearing at all is saying something about how the Justice Dept. of Ca tried to give her due process at least.

I have never agreed with any one post so much as I do this one.Right on rcjames.I don't hate the women, but anyone who does such a crime should never be freed.Even If she did get saved.

bluestone -> RE: Manson Family Member Might Get Compassionate Parole (7/18/2008 2:41:55 PM)

Showing compassion in this case would set a precedent for others: members of the Mansion group, as well as others such as John List who is approaching later years.

Killing one person in the heat of the moment is criminal, bad and tragic.
Killing many people, and torturing them for fun or any other reason is horrendous. Particularly when you do so because someone else wants you to.
