No . . . .

Whassup?

Do you know me or something and see me wearing those little magnetic earrings sometimes? Nope, no piercings. But I do wear those on rare occasion.

No piercings -- ever. No my bag.

Oh, I don't know what's going on, but I cut out the salt mouthwash temporarily, at least. I have developed a thin white coating on my tongue, and I'm not sure why. Oh, I'm just so touchy. This is ridiculous.

I doubt if it's the salt mouthwash - more likely to be an indication of something else. For example it can be a sign of dehydration or of a yeast infection. It can also be a build up of dead cells on the tongue. If I were you, I wouldn't stop the salt mouthwash - it's way better for you than anything else you've been using.

Really? Then I'll vote for dehydration. I should start tallying what I drink.

Ab--I'm beginning to think you just need a tongue transplant and be done with it. Now go drink some water!

Nope, no fear of needles. I'd given gallons of blood before I developed PBC, and I would still be doing it if I were healthy.

Tongue transplant! That'll work! Yeah, I drink tea all day, not water. The water here is horrid, and I quit drinking it years ago.

I know, some teas are diuretics.

I hadn't given 'gallons' but I'd donated ~ and I will again should I ever get to 3 months when my meds aren't changed and my thyroid and everything else is functioning reasonably well (I'd donate even if it weren't but I'd have to lie!).

I thought that you couldn't give blood if you were on thyroxine?

How about bottled water?

I am a very bad person. I buy and drink only bottled water but rarely use it straight. I know me: if it isn't tea, I know I will drink less than half of what I drink now. I drink tea in order to make sure I drink something.

Here's the thing: I am really out of touch with my body. I was reared in such a way that I learned to ignore my body, to not feel things, to not read its alarms, as a very young child. It was just best that way.

Now, I am paying for that. For example, if I don't force myself to eat, I will literally go all day without food, until supper. This morning, although I had been up since 6:30 or so, I remembered breakfast at 10:30 and ate quickly, getting to work at 11:30, and not eating again until I got home this evening. That's just the way I am. But while I am fine without food, I am not fine without drinks, so I carry a closed cup of tea all day, everywhere I go. The bottle of water would just sit there, ignored.

I am bad.

I started giving in about 1977 and gave blood until about 1990 or so, when they asked me to start doing apheresis (sp?). One can do apheresis more often than giving pints of straight blood, and I would give double. It was just my thing -- what I did for humanity. Now, my son gives every time he can.

I don't know if this would suit you at all, but my first drink of the day, every day, is hot water with a dash of lemon juice, an hour before I have anything else, and preferably while I am still in bed!

It has a kind of detox effect, and is good for the liver.

Now I don't like to drink anything else first thing. If my husband brings me a different drink in bed, I leave it and get up and make my hot water with lemon instead!

I thought that you couldn't give blood if you were on thyroxine?
The only time I've been stopped was when some fool form-filler wasn't up-to-date on rules and told me I couldn't donate because I was taking lithium (I'd checked and knew it wasn't a problem).

After that, whenever I've donated, they've seen the meds and called a nurse to see me. When speaking to her, I tell her when my last blood test was and confirm the results were 'normal' and that I haven't had any changes in meds in the past 3 months.

I don't think I've donated since '06 (though it could even be '05) so rules may have changed since then. If my thyroid ever comes into normal range, I'll phone them and check it's still ok to donate.

Something is better than nothing (though I fail to understand how anyone can drink tea!). I know someone who would carry a bottle of water with whatever her favourite drink was and whenever she wanted her favourite, she'd have some water first.

Try adding slices of citrus to your water if you don't like ordinary water.

I had forgotten -- I was going to try that. I would not enjoy it, however; it would be medicine to me. You drink it hot? Not cold? Is there a health reason to drink it hot?

I was not sure if I would enjoy it at first. And it seemed quite sharp to me initially. But it also felt cleansing and easy on the stomach. It grew on me, and now I look forward to it.

Sources say to use hot water for "full effect". I make it with boiling water (about half to twothirds of a mug) and then top it up with cold, so that it is the right temperature for drinking.

I do drink lemon water cold as well - but not first thing in the morning (usually in the afternoon).
I use chilled sparkling water, and add lemon juice, and it's very refreshing.

But first thing in the morning, always hot water.

I've heard that hot water or other liquids are supposed to be helpful to the arteries and heart.

Okay, thank you, Manda & Diva. I don't drink many things hot, except in the winter, when I used to drink hot cocoa nearly daily.

When I worked at the blood bank, we were told that cold water helps build up the blood faster, but that doesn't seem to go with hot water building up the heart and arteries. I don't know. I am medical-knowledge-deficit.

I think what I had read actually had to do with cultures where it is common to drink a hot liquid after a meal and there was a connection that those folks generally had lower cholesterol. Not real sure though.

Waaalll, that makes a lot of sense, when you think about it. Interesting.

I haven't had my cholesterol checked in a long time, but one thing that bothers me, and it's interesting to me while it is a royal pain, is that people with PBC will develop cholesterol deposits around their eyes. I have those. It started out being one thingy that rested on my lower left eyelid, and it looked like a pimple, that would constantly grow and decrease. One day, in an act of half-asleep confusion, I went in my bathroom, took the scissors, and cut it off my eyelid!! It's a good thing I didn't cut up my eye! When I woke a couple hours later, I was stunned, because I could remember clearly that I did it, and it wasn't there anymore! It also hasn't returned. But now, I have these deposits at the inner corners of my upper eyelids. If I do something to them in the night, I am in BIG trouble. I have to cover them with my makeup, when I wear makeup, because they are lighter than the rest of my face. I have other small deposits around my eyes, but they are hardly noticeable.

See the big red thingy under my left eye? Those are also related to PBC. I have those, mostly smaller, all over. They have really concerned all my grandchildren, as they grew mature enough to understand pain and have compassion for others' pain. They think I am bleeding, and they feel real bad for me, until they finally understand that I am fine and they don't hurt.

So I have another question. Just picking your brains, since you have all been so helpful to me here.

About every 45 to 60 days, I get completely exhausted, sleeping for hours for several days -- usually 4 to 5 days.

Last night, it hit hard. I just counted how long I slept, and it was around 11 hours, after which I woke slightly refreshed. This is the worst it has been. Perhaps, with it being so bad, it will also be over soon! Who knows.

Have you any ideas re what I can do to hold these periods to a minimum, what I can do to shorten them when they occur -- anything? I suppose, really, I shouldn't be asking. It's just so frustrating when it hits. I missed a very important meeting (not work-related) last night because of it.

Oh, who knows why this happens.

Abiyah, I have no answers regarding your sleep pattern, but I can be like that too. I blame my thyroid for it and just am learning to live with it.

Nope, it just seems to happen. Drives me up the wall most of the time to be honest because it comes out of the blue.... if it was because I was continually eating junk I could understand it but it happens when I eat well too... I've found it easier to deal with if I just accept it instead of fighting it all the time.
