Well, we had the party, and it was pretty nice. I didn't feel too out of place, but I did get my feelings hurt. I was talking to this couple that are always really nice to me, and are hispanic. The husband works outside alot, and he was showing me how tan he was getting on his legs (I know that sounds bad in print, but it wasn't, he was wearing shorts, and his wife was right there), and I said even his not tan ankle was darker than my skin. And I thought they were just going to chuckle, or say, not to worry, and point out some attractive feature I DID have (I do have some, even if I am miss paleness), and the wife said, "Yeah, look at your leg,it's as white as the chair." Yes, I was sitting in a white chair. I was really really hurt. And I wasn't wearing shorts, just capri pants.

How inappropriate! I would have the hardest time not shooting back some tactfully yet nasty remark (assuming I could think up one quickly).

You know what, to some culture, being dark is negative. In my old country, if you're darker, you are considered extremely unattractive. If you had told that to someone, about the tan compliment, they'd take it as an insult and they'd automatically insult you back. That's probably what happened with the people in your church. However, in my culture, you can openly say that someone is fat in front of them, and they'd just laugh at it.

For our holidays her in Canada, which was Canada day on July 1. I slept in. then I and a couple of people that I work with visited this lady that caused a major traffic accident (killing 2 people). She was new at driving and got confused. she was very distraught and needed company. Then we were going to see the fireworks but I had to work the following day so I stayed in with my kid..

*ahem* Respectfully, it is nip it in the bud. There shall be no nipping of bugs on my watch.

My apologies. *bows deeply*

However, at my house, the boys and I are serial killers of bugs so you may not wish to visit when it's hot and humid out.

Now I see a new thread in M&E about that.

When I read that explanation, that 's what I thought of too... When I taught (hispanics), we actually had to suspend a student for his remarks about how 'second class' and 'dirty' his darker classmates were... and, being a minority in a 'lighter' group, they may have felt 'called out' about it- or pointed out that you were right, you are definately lighter than they are...

That's how it is in Mexico(I know, I've been there), but the Hispanics in THIS TOWN, that were born and raised HERE are actually pretty proud of their olive skin because they know the rest of us like it. And they were born and raised here. But I'm over it, really. I made the mistake of making that post right after I came home and it was fresh on my mind. Once an extra day went by I realized it was not a big deal.

Well, HE brought it up, and he seemed PLEASED with himself about being able to tan so well. Instead of saying more, I will just say, see above post.

Just got back from camping this weekend and I just had to come to CW to catch up. Yes, I'm probably addicted (lol). I always seem to forget just how hard the ground is insisde the tent and I woke up feeling like I got hit with a Mac Truck. Time to add a nice cot or air mattress to the list of things to purchase before camping again. Needless to say, I didn't sleep very well as I tossed and turned but I had a great time with our ministry.

Isn't it nice to wake up outside, in the woods, with fresh air, and the birds singing to you? I went camping last weekend too and I woke up with this bird singing such a melodious tune and I thought i could wake up to that every morning. And it wasn't just chirping; it was literally singing. I'm gonna go back camping again maybe next week just to find out what bird that was.

Now that was the part that made it all worthwhile. There's something about the way birds sing that makes you wonder if they are actually praising God. Most of the time, I am awakened in the early morning by birds singing outside my window and it is the most beautiful sound to wake up to. Once in a while, I'll get one of the more annoying birds but I take it in stride (lol). I'll try to go camping at least three times a year. My friends have been trying to get me into hiking and I just may bite. They've been training to do Mt. Whitney this summer and the put in 22-mile hike the other day. Needless to say, I'm not that into it although I can see myself doing some of the smaller local mountains in the area.

Figured I'd take a gamble on the spelling but there's no pulling any punches with this crowd (lol).

the OP mentioned it being a US holiday- though I am QUITE surprised that it is not one in certain other places too!!!! I worked with neighbours to our north, and if there wasn't a holiday a week, they'd just celebrate one of ours

You are aware that we had our own holiday this week? Tuesday?

All Tuesdays are holidays in Canada?

I know it was Canada Day. At least that is what my wall calender says.

Ok, birthdays are a holiday. I basically didn't do much, since it conflicted either with people's plans or their diets... but what do you do? Throw yourself a party (btdt). Do nothing (btdt). Do you have people who do things for you?

My friends threw me an 80's birthday party.

How did you celebrate your birthday, love?

I thought with Thanksgiving coming up we can talk about our plans.

Every year I fly out to see my brother and his family, and my other brother will usually fly in with his son. THIS YEAR for the first time in 10+ years my parents will be there as well. (it's usually just the siblings). We live in four states so it's really special to get together like this.

This is soooooo way off topic but you can flog me later or mods delete
KUKU I have missed you girl (hugs)

okay back to regularly scheduled thread, and UM I cant even imagine holidays alone for one.. I would probably find some ducks to hang out with (oldtimers inside joke ha!)

On a serious note, I would say I would find somewhere if it were just me to volunteer my time.. like a food pantry.. O Im sure someone has already said that one.. but thought I would through my 2 cents in lol

Brenda - you can make off-topic comments - as long as you have SOMETHING that's on topic.

It's okay to say to Kuku that you've missed her - just like I nearly freaked out at seeing you the other day.

I'll have to do this next year, I'm sure - I really don't want to have to think about it until that time.

It's Canadian Thanksgiving here on Monday, and I'll be studying all weekend...no Turkey for me! But I might make a sweet potato pie. It's to die for. I might also go show up at some invitations, but chances are, I'll be too consumed by my exam the following day that I won't be a fun person to be around with. However, I'm still very much thankful for a lot of things in my life....and that's all that matters.

Normally go to the mall and out to dinner with some of my friends, this year my birthday

happened to land on a "youth night" at church so my mom and dad surprised me and brought

pizza and cake for everyone, it was so much fun! The sweetest thing that I have ever had done

for me was that my friend's band learned one of my favorite songs and then played it for me in

front of everyone at one of our youth groups meetings, it was so sweet that they took the time

to do that, it is a special memory that I will keep in my heart forever! And I cried when my dad

had flowers delivered to school for my eighteenth birthday, it made me feel so special! I could

name a million other sweet things I have had done for my birthday, but to save you from

boredom, I won't!

This holiday I'll be doing some home repairs for the folks. Have to haul my compressor and nail gun over there and shoot some nails into the trimwork. (I've got a useful but boring life)

I'm thinking about doing some sort of volunteer work this thanksgiving - maybe giving out food at a soup kitchen or something like that. I might get invited somewhere this year - simply because I know more people. I don't know too many people who are unattached to family (so we could all spend thanksgiving together) - although my cousin will be down here for thanksgiving - so I might spend some time with her.

My birthday is coming up soon. Usually I don't like my birthday - not because I'm getting older, but because I usually feel most alone then. Phone calls, lunches, and dinners from friends are quite nice, and I'm grateful for them, but it would be much nicer to have someone special to share that day with. However, I want to break that pattern this year. I have two weeks to plan - any suggestions are welcome! I'm thinking about going someplace beautiful - maybe splurging for a nice hotel room and flowers - and spending the time with God - almost like a little mini-retreat. But, I'm open to suggestions!
