2 Timothy 4:7-8 (New International Version)

7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

What exactly is "the race" that Timothy is referring to here? Is it life on this earth? Or is it in reference to our faith in Christ? If this race is in reference to our faith in Christ, does that mean those who have fallen away, or those who are non-believers not in the race?

Its another way of saying...I have accomplished my role God had for me.

Paul is refering to our Christian Faith... our walk... here on earth.

He is speaking to Christians in general... encouraging us to keep going no matter what. Even when you are beat up and exhausted... when your tired and feel like you just can't go another step; he says to persevere... keep striving... give it all you've got; until God takes you home.

I would encourage all those who study the Word, to invest in a good Study Bible. I use the New King James Version, a Thomas-Nelson. It has great footnotes and study guides to help you understand what the Word is saying. Yet, still... I love to find out what key words in a verse meant in the original Hebrew or Greek... that gives me an even deeper understanding.

Paul (if he is,indeed the author of Hebrews) used the same image there, after listing a stellar array of people of faith he says:
Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2)

He is obviously referring to our walk of faith.

The testimony of the witnesses he has listed is eloquent and unmistakable. We are to run the race that God sets before us, over coming obstacles and trials to complete the course we are to run.

Tim

Oops! I gave credit to the wrong person. Thanks for the correction.

Yes, the race is our walk of faith in Christ. We are to keep our eyes on Jesus, seek first His kingdom in all we say and do, love Him with all our heart, soul, strength and mind, and love others as He loves them.

I think that the race He is speaking of, is the race of being one of the first 144000. There seems to be great blessings for anyone making that mark. No Scriptural evidence, just a thought. To be a part of the body of the firstborn. Just thinking.[8|]

I agree with pstrdebi.
We all have a race set before us and we must keep going every day no matter what comes along.
Thank you Father God for setting the race before us.
In Jesus Name, Amen

I did a study into those numbers 144,000 which is 12,000 x 12, in the ref. it took a look at numbers in the scriptures and meanings of certain things. ie 100 can be a symbol for fullness, etc.
and 144,000 was not meaning an exact number of people, but meaning certain people ie 12 x 12 = 12 is a symbol for divine government, 12 x 12 maybe patriarachs x apostles 12= 144,
x 1,000 meaning = coming to maturity
144,000 may be a symbolic number, not a real one, and being apart of that group may involve coming to maturity/perfection in having that face to face relationship with the Lord, mouth to mouth communing, like in sos - the woman bride with her beloved betrothed, the Breath of God his breathing into you through His Word and Spirit until you are His Word made flesh, or Jesus is full stature inside of you.

my quivers full -> RE: The Race (7/23/2008 8:20:40 PM)

Recently, I was wrestling with this difficult time I had been having over my wife and i being separated and the seemingly never ending issues of life that I have to go through. I had a dream, where God showed me that He had given me challenges to face and obstacles to overcome and that He has assigned tasks to each of us. When i awoke, I heard Him tell me to keep running the race that He set before me. I know from what I read in scripture and through personal experience that all that God puts before me is for my good. A refiners fire to rid me of the things of this world, that I may be a pure and spotless bride for Him. To help me to grow to be more like Him in word and action. He doesn't put anything in my path that I can't overcome with Him at my side. I learn that I can truly do nothing apart from Him and though sometimes it seems tiring, it is the race I need to run, and He will give me the strength to overcome, if i keep looking to Him, waiting for Him and not give up.

Run the race He has set before you
