My people do not allow dogs to come in the house, but we don't find them to be offensive in public or in the media. Dogs are companion animals developed over centuries to guard our homes and livestock, help us hunt, draw carts or carry burdens (yes some dogs were bred to be draft animals), track, kill rats and vermin(terriers were bred specifically for this), herd(collies, shepherds), and several breeds do more than one of these. Some dogs were bred simply to be pets. No problem. I do have a problem when people take dogs places they aren't meant to go, like to a cemetary where their owner walks them around and lets them do their business on and amongst the graves, or to someone else's house without asking permission. Pets do not belong on an airplane either as other passengers might be allergic or the pet might bite someone. Pets are not children, and the owners need to remember that and respect other people's spaces, health, and safety. Service animals are different, as they are trained to assist the disabled or law enforcement.
