HarleyWulf -> Question on what others do... (7/2/2008 3:27:32 PM)

My wife and I have a 4 year old son, and he has started touching himself a lot. I am just curious about what other parents do about this. Do you try to stop it every time you see it, do you say they can only do it in a certain place (when by himself on his bed, etc.)? I am inclined to try to stop him from doing it period, but I fear that is a never ending, losing battle. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Thanks, I'll read through that post. Didn't see it when I did a search [:)]

I would just let him do it - nothing wrong with "exploring" your body. However, I would tell him that he only can do this in private - never outside or in front of others.

He'll grow out of it for awhile. I was always honest with my son when he was growing up and answered any questions regarding sex, etc. He could come to me anytime and ask :)

This is normal and there is no reason to stop this. If I had a boy I would just encourage that he do it during his "private time" and not out in public or at school or anything like that. Otherwise, go for it. He gets to wash his own sheets though. [:D]

When my son was that age, he explored himself. I didn't make a big deal out of it. I told him that is something that should be done in private like in his bedroom. Normally, he did it absentmindedly in front of the TV or in the tub. I would remind him to take his activity to his room. He would always stop though instead of choosing to explore further in his room. My perspective is that I didn't want him to feel bad about it. At the same time I wanted him to realize it isn't something done in public spaces.
