Prison/jail ministry is risky.

It is the only ministry where you know for a fact you're dealing with people who don't exactly follow the rules. It is a real concern that someone find out where you live.

At the least, you might get hit up for money. At the worst, your personal safety could be at risk.

When he first started this ministry, I was very aware of that. We were told that the prison keys were made of a soft metal so that they could be broken if the prisoners took him hostage. Over time, though, it became just part of our life and I didn't think about it so much. When I posted our family picture for my avatar a while back, he was pretty upset. It just never dawned on me that his picture could cause problems. Of course, if they really wanted to track him down, they wouldn't have much trouble. He has an unusual first name and the prison makes him wear a name badge with both first and last name on it.

One of my dogs is a therapy dog and she has her own photo ID. This ID is required to be visable at all times. Uh, if we ever go into certain ministries, the photo ID will be put away! Our last name is so unusual that you google it, and we're related to anyone who comes up. We're talking, siblings, aunts/uncles, and cousins. Noone in the "once removed" catagory.

I was supposed to make peach jam iwth my neighbor this morning. They had so many peaches on their tree this year! However, she ended up giving so many away that she didn't have enough to make jam! Ops!

I had enough cherries to make cherry jelly this afternoon. Except, my pot boiled over. I caught it before it burned. But, I have cherry jelly all over my stove! I'm hoping it will set and be easier to clean up. Right now, though, my hands are really stained!

Mmmm, cherry jelly.

I have a huge bag of green beans to put in the freezer. My neighbor blessed me with them, which is wonderful since I didn't plant any. I meant to plant some, but somehow it never happened.

Tough test standards trip up schools

quote:

passing rates were as low as 17 percent of schools in Durham, 24 percent in Wake County and 33 percent in Orange County.

Passing rates were 50 percent in Johnston County, 53 percent in Chatham County and 59 percent in Chapel Hill-Carrboro.

To meet the federal standards, at least 77.2 percent of students in an elementary or middle school had to pass the math exams. That's up from 65.8 percent last year.

I have located a grading scale for "normal" school work:

Superior (96-100)
Well Above Standard (90-95)
Above Standard (85-89)
At Standard (77-84)
Below Standard (70-76)
Unsatisfactory (Below 70)

granted most schools are going in for the 1-4 evaluations now- You know the new math stuff, when real math shows how bad you are doing you create a new system to camouflage the facts and bend the numbers. the averages and percentages show the truth.

Yeah, I do this every year- the results seem to get WORSE every year! and the parents of the kids attending these schools grill me about my kids needing to be tested.

Shadow- until the last year the NC DNPE **DID** publish a PDF file with the schools PHYSICAL address online.

Now they list it thus: LINK HERE By county then, Chief Admin & School name.

I also found THIS PDF Listing(680 PDF pages LONG!) that one has ALL counties listed- a control number then county then school name and cheif admin.

There is even a list online for those NC homeschools that MOVE COUNTIES-

a page with a list of all the Homeschools that got DEC Driving Eligibility Certificates Issued for Home Schools

We actually went through some hoops a while back(2 years?) to get out address changed to a PO Box instead of our Physical address. Had a lawyer even write in and tell them that their posting our info as such put our children at risk(long story related to adoption and older siblings) They allowed us to change the address and then shortly after they did away with the posting of the addresses so far as I can tell.

We usually just say we are from the Raleigh area online.

I should send Brandon to his room more often. Today he got sent there because he refused to try and find his mistake in a math problem. He apparently thinks that is my job It's a really easy one, and a mistake he makes too often, but he just was not going to try, so I told him to go wait on his bed until he was ready.

He has been asleep for two hours now!

The problem is that lately he's spending TOO much time in there, away from the family, and also he and Nate are clashing over privacy issues.

Mostly, though, he's just having a hard convergence of events--mom trouble, girl trouble, dad trouble, etc. And having to get up earlier than he's accustomed to. I feel sorry for him, but don't want to cut him much slack, kwim?

To top THAT off, my stepmom laughs at me and declares she can't wait to see what happens, whenever I say we don't do the dating thing here, there will be no boyfriend-girlfriend stuff. She raised two sons, but quite differently than I am trying to raise mine, and most of the time she's a great encouragement, but on this issue she just doesn't get it. And it is hard enough doing this as a single mom with no one else we know choosing this route, and not knowing how to handle this girl that is in his life all of a sudden!

Tempting..very tempting!

Nate and I tried to put together a puzzle of a map of the world, but we ran out of room on the card table! And they are not interlocking pieces so you really can't move chunks of it.

Jen- Trill's Beau has undergone some sort of hormonal transformation that is breaking my heart as well as his momma's. So far trill is making better choices. Setting better boundaries. Thing is her changing the line or rather actually saying this is the line where there was suspossed to be a mutually understood line prior is causing a 19yo young man to do some really stupid things. Trill is starting to see some of the manipulations and such now-

I told her that the young man that has been visiting us the past 4 sundays is not the same young man she encouraged to talk to her father in march. his mother called and he actually unplugged the phone on her. . His mom took great issue with that and then called me back. She is seeing what i am seeing and even more of it. I told her how we had been handling it over here and that we were seeing some changes over the last 4 weeks so far as trill making better choices and that her making said choices might actually be causing some of the Angst at her place.

It hurts my heart to see how he has changed from a upstanding gentleman into a disrespectful, sniveling, pouting, untrustworthy, lieing.... it hurts his mommas heart too- though she did not use those same words. It is crazy. He wasn't raised this way.

~e

PS- Cindy, did you tell her NO, that he shouldn't do that for another 3 days and that he must have some awesome eye/mouth coordination and they should start training him to be the next hot dog eating champ as soon as he got some teeth!

Ezri, I'm so sorry about Trill's Beau. I am glad to hear that she is seeing through him though.

Cindy: too funny. I like Ezri's response for you though.

DD2 has been begging me to do school. Last year for SS they did the first half of US history through the reconstruction. This year the book starts at Civil War through present so there are a couple chapters of overlap. I printed some math worksheets for her and told her she could start reading those couple chapters of History. She wanted to start reading history now so that when I do it together with DD1 she has a little bit of exposure to it already and it's easier when we do it together in a month or so. I plan to start after FOT.

I didn't take the call. I was very afraid I would not be nice. I'll keep that in mind for next time, though.

Ok, seriously, if I were the call-answerer, you know, the person who takes the number and subject and gives them to the nurse? The nurse would never have had to call back! Some people have apparently never actually MET children before they have them!

Ezri, I am sorry to hear that. How long until Trill is just plain fed up?

Thanks. I was wondering as several people mentioned it. Can I come? Just kidding... I can't seem to keep my feet in the same place for more than 48 hours lately. I have put 5000 miles on my car in just over 2 months! And I am heading back to Cincinnati in the morning (I just was there over the weekend, but need to return). I am SO ready for our house to sell and to settle down. At least we have some furniture in the rental house now, although we are still sleeping on an air mattress. It is taking it's toll on my back (as well as all the driving). Our king mattress is too big to fit up the narrow stairway to our bedroom here. Our plan is to buy 2 nice twin beds which we will push together and use, then give them to the kids as their mattresses are cheap and very hard. But we cannot afford to spend the $$ on the new mattress sets with 2 sets of utility bills, etc, and lots of extra expenses this summer. Our plan was to spend our economic stimulus $$ on curriculum, but it is gone and I have gotten nothing... I am doing okay but am about at my "whit's end" and could use some prayers to help me stay strong and patient... I am getting very, very tired.

Unfortunately they can't legally do that. The intake people aren't medically trained, and there is a huge liability issue if they answer any questions or give out any advice. We've actually had an issue with one of them telling parents what to do for fevers - she is a good hearted soul and just wants to help the parents out, but unfortunately she has told them things we wouldn't necessarily recommend.

We're still hiring, Jen.

Melissa, whereabouts around Cleveland did you end up? (PM me if you'd rather not say in the forum.)

ROFLMBO...is that how it's come to be known? I know it began as Feast of the Tabernacles...but I guess with all the guests camping out at Ellie's place, the former makes sense.

Wanna know what's awful? My mom is flying to Maryland tomorrow morning! She can't fit us all in her suitcase, though.

OK, yeah, I knew it wasn't quite right as I said it.

Too bad you can't fit in her suitcase. If she is flying to BWI that's only about 1:15 from my house.
