Hi. I realize I should have been posting here instead of the other place. I am very excited because my neighbor is giving me A Beka curriculum. Is it a good one? I hope so for free. Well she said if I felt bad I could pay her 1 dollar.

Abeka is a very popular curriculum. It is more traditional and was developed for classroom use. I have used the readers and the reading drills, but that's it. It is a solid, Bible based curriculum. Some families thrive on it. I cannot see our family thriving on it, but from what you've described of your home life and your husband's expectations, it will probably work great for you.

ETA: Besides that, it seems to me that the Lord specifically gave this to you. If that is the case, then what is there to worry about! It should be just fine. If nothing else, it will get you started and help you develop and idea of what direction you need to go.

Getting it for free IS a real blessing! A Beka has a lot of good things. I like their History, Science, Poems, Spelling and LOVE their readers.... but am not crazy about their Math and English. But, it is a good. Just not for us. I have used everything else though.

It'll be great for you to get started. Just don't be afraid to change things up if you don't like how it's going. And then the next year, if you don't like all of some of it, you'll know it and can look for something different, with the knowledge of what you did or didn't like. It's a lot of trial and error, IME, so don't be afraid to say something isn't working, even if it works for 90% of other hsers.

Speaking of sig lines, someone's former siggy gets a lot of airtime around here. I think it was cynthia's old siggy.

Remember: when you do the right thing, it's the right thing for everyone involved, because truth is not some relative concept.

If it was you cynthia, thanks! If it was someone else, thanks to you! We discuss it often.

Yep, that was me. That is a concept I use often to explain to people that when you do the right thing, even if it upsets people, it's even the right thing for the person that doesn't like it.

Well, it has really been helpful, especially when one of us starts feeling sorry for Michael, my former student. And usually that one of us is dd, but it strikes others at random as well.

Yep, it's even true for Michael. Enabling people is not any better for them than it is for me.

Well, he wasn't drinking at our house, so I don't think we qualify as his enablers.

But I still get the analogy.

Michael definitely needs to walk with God on his own two feet without our support. If he stumbles and falls, and fails to get back up, that's on him. But I know the Lord will never leave him nor forsake him and Jesus is great at helping people back on their feet. The Lord has been doing it for centuries on a world-wide basis without any help at all from me, if you can imagine that.

In other news, I am so proud of DS. He has decided to play football with the home school football league this fall.

It will be a lot of driving, but I am hoping he'll make some new Christian friends out of this experience. His neighborhood friends are not all keepers anymore now that they have spent a year in high school.

No, Shadow, you aren't enablers. That is my point. He may not appreciate the decisions you have made, but they are for his benefit as well as yours, because you are setting good boundaries and doing the right thing. You not allowing him to disrupt your family and your lives is the right thing for him as well as for you, even (and maybe especially) when he cannot or will not see that. He is also more likely to come to repentance if you set those difficult, but good boundaries, than if you didn't. It actually makes it easier for him to come to truth, because you are walking in truth and love. That was what I had meant.

So true! And that is what your siggy put so succinctly.

If I could, I would give you some kind of award for that. Is there a siggy of the year award?

Thanks, Shadow. The award is when it causes people to think and brings understanding. I'm glad you've used it in your family.

Oh yeah, I never mentioned how my portfolio thing is. THey are fine with it. I need to get DD2's test results and submit them still. Also, they want to see a copy of the evaluator's certificate. Since she works at a private school she doesn't have to be certified (only certifiable maybe ) I pointed that out to the lady in the office and they said they'd just like to see something. I think they just want to know she is someone who actually teaches. I will submit what she can give me. If they don't like that, I will contact HSLDA since they can't really ask for it I don't think. However, I don't think it will be too hard to comply to this one. I know some of you wouldn't even do that but I expect a battle over the test I used. It's not on the state's list but hte law also says it just has to be a nationally normed test and it is. HSLDA said to use it and if they give me a hard time they would argue it for me.

Zoebob-I hope that there is not any problem with your test choice. Glad that they accepted the portfolios.

I never give anything that is not required by law. My school district asks for information that is not required, so I don't fill out those portions. The office staff has pointed out that I missed a couple places and I just tell them that I never give out anything not required by law. They looks confused, but no one has ever argued with me. If they did, I'd tell them to read the law. They have to accept what I give them. They have no authority over us here in Washington State. There's nothing they could do to make me miserable. If they could, I still wouldn't give them anything, I'd just ring up HSLDA.

All this talk of portfolios has me wondering why I did not get a grey card this year... I should have. A grey card is notification that the state wants our test results. you get it in year #3 if I am not mistaken- this is year #4 for us. I think a call to the state offices might be in order. I know with all that has been going on this spring/summer I am just now ordering the tests.

Ah well- such is life. Jerry will be gone for two weeks here soon and that will be a good time to do them. That way we are not wasting valuable daddy time scratching little circles with a #2 pencil.

Amy - nice to see you in the chat thread! I think the Abeka will be a good place to start, but like others have said don't be afraid to switch to something else if it's not working. And hey - you can't beat the price!!!

One of the things I am not looking forward to about moving is having to do reporting/testing/portfolios. I've been spoiled by living in 2 places with no reporting required & I'm fairly sure the next place will be different.

I was feeling really ho hum this morning, but am feeling better now. Hope everyone else is having a good day. Off to do my 1st "test"!

Ez, if you are in NC you are not even required to send in the info asked for on the grey card.

Technically, if they want to see it, they need to make an appointment with you in advance and come to your front porch to view it. You do not need to let them in your house or even see your children. I highly doubt anyone would go to the trouble, unless you live in the Raleigh area. Especially with gas prices these days!

Having said all that, I do send in their silly info if/when I get a grey card. But I was wondering when they are going to stop pestering me for the info, personally. It's so meaningless anyway. I find it rather annoying.

They want an attendance record and a copy of test scores, but as far as I can tell your kids can score anything on the tests and it makes no difference. They just want proof one was administered.

Coming from Florida, where proof is required that your students are "progressing commensurate with his/her abilities", it seems superfluous to me that they ask for anything, since proof of student progress is not an issue.

My mom has made more progress in DD1's room. WE are up to almost 6 full bags of trash. A full bag of stuff animals that can probably be given away but we are goign to just put them away somewhere and see if she asks about them.

Mom also found more than 50 pencils in her room...not to mention colored pencils, markers, pens, etc.

We're going to be cleaning bedrooms today & tomorrow - wonder how many pens/pencils etc... we will find!

I'm getting there on all the paperwork & stuff I need to do for the scout tours. I'm waiting on some e-mails back, so I may go do some cleaning.

Warning!! Bodily functions discussion follows (may not be for the squeamish - although I'll try not to be too detailed ):
I did my 1st test, can I just say !! It says not to do the test if you have bleeding from menstruating or hemorrhoids. I had a bit of bleeding afterward (the same as before, what I thought was hemorrhoids, but may not be ). But I'd already done the test & there's no way to undo it. I hope the results still come out. I have to do 2 more for the next 2 consecutive BMs (and no I don't mean breast milk )!

Well, a couple years ago I bought a gross of pencils. THere can be times when they need a new pencil every day because theycan't find the one from the day before. When we put the 50 or so in the drawer I realized there were only about 48 left from before. PLus I bought 32 at Staples for 4 cents so I think we are good for most of the year.

BIF, I'm heading to the US this afternoon after my ultrasound ... what all does Staples have on sale right now??? (The online flyer doesn't want to load for me, as it is sensing a Cdn ISP address ... "this cannot be viewed because you are out of the marketing area" or something to that effect)

Well- Mmmm- My husband works in Raleigh.

There was a big stink last year as they sent out notices that they would be at a POLICE STATION to do record reviews and wanted folks in the area to come to the POLICE STATION to do these record review voluntarily.

This never happened.

it was not my area but it was a bit too close to home.

Proof you test is required but you can actually white out everything save the students name and the date the test was done/scored on the paper you send in. Last time we were in NC I sent in the tests without the attendance paper and as you said no one said a thing- i did not even leave it out on purpose. Just forgot is all.

I think if they just showed up I'd tell um that I was available the next month for a meeting to share only the information required by state law at a local eatery. If they'd like to make an appointment they can call my home phone, which they have on file.

If I remember correctly you can get the following for 1 penny:
mini hand sanatizers(2)
folders with or without prongs(10) additional for 10 cents each
8 pack of pencils(2)
For a quarter:
1/2 inch or 1 inch plastic 3 ring b inders.(4)

$4.99 but with an online rebate for 4.99 a 4 pack of highlighters(1)

Those are the really cheap deals

There are limits on each too that I put in parenthesis but you could go in twice

Our Staples had good deals yesterday, but nothing that good, lol.

So, I bought a snow cone today and realized that I have not had a snow cone to myself in over 15 years! I still haven't, btw, but I bought the giant size knowing that I would be sharing.

Nate made me buy berries at the farmer's market, and then he ate almost all of them on the mile drive to my mom's house! Next year he's going to have to grow some.

Brandon's first swim meet of the season is tonight. One of my cousins and my little sister are also on the team.
