I saw your pics His... What place did you guys get? Was that pics of your oldest son? He is handsome! Jen... that is usually how I do it. I try to grade, but then an "F" gets in the way.... so I usually quit grading things and I do what His said. I guess if I was going to keep grading, I would do another test after I felt Mastery has been accomplished.

Homegrown--Son and I both placed 2nd in our age groups. This was ds1's third race in the series and his third second place. He's almost secured 2nd in points for the series. He'll do one more "regular" race, then the championship race, where points are doubled. I don't think anyone can catch him, unless something terrible happens. Since I have changed distances (sprint/olympic) I am not doing the series. Speaking of terrible things happening... Elliot is ds1's nemisis. He's beaten him every time. So there's a bit of a rivalry going. Elliot's mom and I talk at every race. She said they didn't think they were going to do this one, since they would have to come back from vacation early. Well, they came back early... ANyway, she told me that coming back into the park, Elliot had flatted. He was able to make it back into transition. Ds1 was bummed that Elliot had a mechanical breakdown. Yah, it gave ds1 a bit of an "advantage". But ds1 doesn't want anything bad to happen to get that advantage. Good sportsmanship or what?!

Great pictures, Hazel! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! Cindy, that must be very frustrating for your MIL to not listen to you. I hope you're wrong though and it goes well. God has a purpose even in our stubbornness. We've actually had quite a bit of rain here...it's just that when it gets so humid, the only thing that will help is rain! It's supposed to be even hotter and more humid today. We're escaping to SIL's after lunch, so we can have naps in AC and then the kids can play in the pool.

So, for those of you who aim for mastery, how do you grade? I mean, if he does a lesson and gets 50 percent but then re-does it with me and I can see that he understands it and has corrected his mistakes, does he have to keep the F? I give 1/2 credit back for every corrected problem, so an F could come up to a C, in theory. In practice, C's come up to B's or A's. An F goes in the trash and they retake the whole thing up to a week later. In the case of a retake, no 1/2 credit for corrected problems- you score what you score. But you can be sure I am confident they could get an A before I re-give the test. I only count test scores towards the final grade, unless they need the daily average to bring up their score. That's what I tell them every year. It keeps the daily grade important in their minds. In practice, I have never needed to count them. The tests accurately reflect their mastery and so they pretty much match up to the daily grades anyway.

I like your method, Shadow. It still gives incentive to get it right the first time, if they are able, and also allows for them really not getting it. (((((((((((((((Jen))))))))))))))) I hope you have a GOOD day and go to bed with a smile on your face tonight.

math- we give half the problems- if they get an A(better than 90%) on the half then they are considered done and we move on. If they don't get better than 90% then I look at how they did do and decide how to proceed- Even if they totally blow the first half of the problems 9 times out of 10 they have it down before we run out of problems in the lesson. I have only had to make up new problems beyond the ones in the lesson a few times. ~e

Teaching Textbooks doesn't have enough problems to only give half. I wish they had extra problems available for practicing when needed, but I have found that re-using the 20 in each lesson works for Brandon. They are a bit too complicated to simply remember them, and the repetition seems to help.

Another think to keep in mind is WHY they missed the problem. Did they totally blow it, as in they don't know what they are doing? Or, was it a simple stupid mistake like 2+2=5?

He does make a lot of copying errors, but I don't take that lightly. I would rather he paid more attention and still got it wrong, to be honest.

Ah.... copying errors... When ds1 gets a problem wrong, the FIRST thing I check is if he copied it correctly.

I am taking the easy route for dinner. I think I am going to get a frozen lasagna, salad and bread. Ok, there is a very young, very idealistic person in parenting who says they can't wait to see me cry when my kids turn 18 and 'run for the hills'.

Huh. We're having frozen lasagna, garlic bread and salad. Dh offered to take me out for my birthday. Frankly I'd rather have the $ to spend on toys! I'm debating between a new GPS unit (giving the old one to ds1--nothing wrong with it!) and aerobars for my bike.

That's funny, His! I will think of you at dinner, lol. I am fixing a taco bar on Saturday for my mom's bday. The other hostess is taking care of the cake, drinks and crafts (she said we are having a Martha Stewart bday party, painting flowerpots while watching the geese, lol).

I ventured over there to read that thread ... I'm quite amused by it. Especially since she appears to be heading towards "permissive parenting" ... which I've seen gone awry far too often!!!

It's actually three threads, I think, lol. But, yeah..I wonder if the parents of the kids in youth group know what she is teaching them?

(((((((((((((((Jen))))))))))))))) I hope you have a GOOD day and go to bed with a smile on your face tonight. Thank you, Donna. I have showered and put on decent clothes and I am in a better mood, lol. Still a tad overwhelmed but I'll be ok. I have lists for the boys to do while I am gone and then I should have a couple of hours when I get back to work with them on other things. It wouldn't be quite so bad if my MOM weren't also coming to dinner.

Happy Birthday, His! I get the mean mommy award for the day. When I left for work yesterday, I pointed to the pile of towels on my bed that I had just pulled off the line and told my 2 youngest to fold them and put them away. That was the only thing I specifically asked them to do. I asked Ashley to hang out the load that was still in the wash and bring it in when dry. Ashley's load was all nice and neat in a basket in my room. The towels . . . were still on my bed when I got home at 5am. Guess what 2 very sleepy, grumpy boys were doing at 5:15 this morning? Could someone please pass the golden spoon? My dh talked with a good friend/pastor who lives in the same town as my MIL. I so love this man - he will tell my dh the stuff that he really needs to hear, and yesterday it was things like is your mom saved and get off your butt and talk to her. He did give him some practical pointers on how to approach it, so my dh says he is going to talk to her today after her doctor's appointment. Larry offered to come over if my dh wanted him to, and if Larry can't get through to her I doubt anyone can. Please pray that my mil will get out of the you don't have to tell ME, I taught Sunday School for 30 years mindset and really listen. I had Bryan check out my car this am. He used the T word (transmission ), but he doesn't work on transmissions so suggested a shop to take it to. It's not slipping, and Bryan thinks it's something electronic like a sensor or whatever. He thinks it's possible that it might be a simple fix but agrees that he would not put a tranny in that car, so I may be car shopping soon. In the meantime, he said drive it like a stick and it should be fine, so that's what I'm doing. I still have to get the other car towed over there so he can figure out what's wrong, but from my description of what happened he guessed timing chain. Have I mentioned that I hate cars?

We had baked salmon, bread and salad. Quick simple and yummy. Did she really say she that? Can you link the post?

Cynthia, it was in the "MySpace" thread in Parenting ... I'll find it and link it in just a second. My jaw just about hit the floor when I read it. Oh, and for any gals who have been following Hillary's (VisitorInWaiting) thread in Marriage (double standard vent) ... she could really use some hugs right now ... there is a young male poster over there telling her it's all her fault and that her hubby is 100% in the right. ETA: Link to MySpace thread
