Our church has a picnic every 4th. One family always hosts it, and they keep it going for enough hours of the day, that even those that have to work are often able to put in an appearance at one point or another.

ORIGINAL: InBetweenDreams Catherine, I very rarely look forward to holiday's because they are boring to me. My family doesn't seem to like celebrating things so Lorne and I are always alone which doesn't make it seem different than any other day. Holiday's would be a lot more fun if we had family to spend the day with... Same here. Dh's aunt is in Michigan for the summer, and we don't really have any friends to hang out with, so holidays are just another day for us most of the time. ((Roberta))- I always feel bad for people who get stuck working holidays because stores feel the need to be open. I try not to have to go shopping on holidays so I don't justify places being open. I have had people tell me that non-christians don't mind working on Christmas day because they can earn good money with holiday pay- that did sort of put things in perspective.

Did anyone do anything special yesterday for Canada Day? We went to a celebration at a park by the waterfront (of Lake Ontario so it wasn't the most spectacular view!) We went with our SIL and her four kids, and one other nephew. Akeelah got her face painted and we had a nice little picnic. Then we stopped by my MIL's where the rest of the family was having a bbq. It was a fun (and long) day! You are all lucky that the 4th is a Friday, we've had the hardest time getting back into the swing of things (especially getting up at 6am), because Dh had Monday and Tuesday off for the holiday. (Hmm...maybe I shouldn't complain about that!) Nicole - I missed so much when I was working retail as well! When I got a managers job, and I was missing out on the weekends, I realized I had to do something else! quote:
I have had people tell me that non-christians don't mind working on Christmas day because they can earn good money with holiday pay- that did sort of put things in perspective. We are not Christmas celebrators. We visit family on that day because it's something to do, but if I had a job that asked me to work Christmas day, I would mind so much because I would get the extra pay. All I would miss is going to my in-laws and that's not a bad thing! quote:
Wal Mart isn't open on Christmas, but they don't give holiday pay for the other holidays. Does the government mandate certain holidays that they have to pay holiday pay, or pay you if the place is closed on a holiday? They do that here.

No they don't have holiday pay for most retail because its a day you would normally be open. Some stores used to pay time and a half on sundays too. Plus retail is min wage unless you are a manager. Now the one job I had that did pay holiday pay was a call center that had to be open on american holidays to serve the canadians. But they had min staff and enough people volunteered so that no one was forced to work.

I am currently looking for work but I won't do retail. I don't want to give up weekends with m'love and I am blessed that I can wait a little while to find a job. That is one reason I left performing after getting married, although for quite awhile it was a favorite way for my wonderful daughter and I to spend time together. I try to stay away from stores on holidays. I agree that only those who want to work on holiday, should. I also think a good manager should rotate weekend staff. When I worked as a photographer, we had Sunday and Mondays off. We were opened all Monday holidays so when others had a three day weekend, we had one day off. BTW cinderella, feel free to post a couple of those pics in the photography thread. I know the other shutterbugs would love to see them, too.

Today is my oldest dd's 21st birthday. She went to live with her grandma when she was a toddler (she did live with me for a short time, but didn't get along with my soon-to-be-ex husband.) I'm driving to see her today. She lives about 2-3 hours away.

No they don't have holiday pay for most retail because its a day you would normally be open. Do you still get paid regular wage for the day? I think thats's what I was asking and may have made things confusing. We get paid (we call it statuatory holiday pay) the regular wage if the store is closed, because you would have gone into work that day, but the company has said you can't. If your company stays open and makes you go in then they have to pay you at least time and a half. There is no more time and a half on Sundays though. DenimDiva - have a wonderful day! I have been so thrown off by this holiday, worse than ever. I still feel like today is Wednesday, and then I realize it's Friday and I got nothing done all week long, and now I realize that next week is just going to be ridiculous with everything I need to do.

Have a great trip Denim! Seeing the young 'ens become adults is great. It wasn't my daughter's 21st birthday that made me feel older, it was her 23rd (now 24th). Quite a few of the retail locations are taking today off to the suprise of their staff.

Not up to much here today either. Planning to go to the gym, then come home and work on some paperwork. If I don't do it today, I'll have to do it over the weekend. There were a bunch of police cars parked down the street a little while ago. I wonder why. We checked the news and didn't see anything.

Australia Day is our version of the 4th of July, and our stores close. A few fast food places may be open for a while, but other than that, retail stores don't open.

I didn't get to go see my dd. It's a long story that involves my mom and I'm not up to getting into that right now. Hopefully, I'll get to see her next weekend sometime.

Well, with the bambino sound asleep by 8pm we didn't go out for fireworks, but we watched 'em on TV! Years back, BC (before children), Greg and I went to the fireworks at Centennial Park in downtown Atlanta. It's a major park and a very impressive fireworks display. That year the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was on strike, but they gave free concerts to maintain public goodwill and put pressure on the people who held the purse strings (it worked). So, we got to hear the ASO play some really awesome pieces, classic patriotic stuff as well as fun movie themes like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Anyways, during the fireworks at one point, we thought they were shooting fireworks right over the heads of the audience! Turns out we didn't see the guide wires strung from lamppost to lamppost throughout the park. The fireworks would run along the guide wires, the light up a small fountain on the top of the lamp post. Very cool effect to put the fireworks right in the middle of the crowd, but freaked a few of us out for a minute.

That is too cool Sideways. I have never gone to Centennial Park for fireworks. Surprises like that makes it so much more fun. They've been repairing a couple of the towers that got knocked down with that down-town twister we had a while back. Now I am way too south in GA to go to Atlanta so we enjoyed small town charm. Gonna work on the photos once I get off the forums here. M'love wants me to play on wow with him, too. And I have laundry to do. And good music playing on the 'puter. God is good.

I could have sworn I made a post in this thread. Anyway, it sounds like most people had a good time yesterday. Catherine, I spent my day first at a parade that Kali had to participate in, and then we spent the rest of the day and the night driving. We got lost trying to find our hotel, but I guess that is what we get when we do things last minute. We were going to leave today, but my husband said Akron had great fireworks so we made it there just in time, and happened to be lost in downtown Akron during the fireworks so we saw most of them, and they were great. Now I am in Maryland and just waiting for my kids to go to sleep so I can go to bed. Sooooo tired. So anyway Catherine, my point is I didn't really do anything special either except freak out when we were lost and the neighborhoods were not the best to stop and ask directions. I used to have to work every holiday and hated it, but now, as long as it is only a few hours, I would not care. But you probably had to work all day. That I would not like.

Yah, I worked all day on the part of the day people care about on 4th of July. I was supposed to work 3:30 PM - 12 AM, but they let me off an hour early since it was a boring day.
