Gotta say I like your so called "cookie cutters" Because typically I can understand the Lyrics. Screamin' groups don't make a whole lotta sense. I don't want to SCREAM my praises at GOD.

Uh, no....take a look at my handle and who I represent. Got no conformity here. Take a look at my new thread, "BILLBOARD HOT CHRISTIAN SONGS," and you'll find that maybe it does reflect this. Often I fear that CCM is getting too commercial, like country did over 15 years ago. This may be why BarlowGirl have so much trouble taking that "next step" and becoming the "All-girl Switchfoot" ...the community is too conservative and set in its ways. They want bands who will say please and thank you, get in line, not rock the boat. This is why I said in the other thread that the Britt Nicole song, Set the World on Fire, bored me so much. It's like she had NO passion and didn't do justice to the song. I've always wondered who's doing this for Jesus and who's doing this for the cash. Cheers...with a can of Ironbeer. I'm guilty of listening to mostly "cookie cutter" CCM too...especially Rich Mullins, Rich Mullins is as far from cookie cutter as you can get. You have to remember, anything by Rich is 10 years or more old. He's the original mold that the "cookie cutter" was made from. For its time, his work is full of originality; from the instruments used to the time signatures to the lyrics, he was full of surprises. When most bands were over-electrified and trying to play everything on their spiffy new synthesizers, Rich and the Ragamuffin band were playing and writing acoustic pieces. Always ahead of the crowd, he was a huge loss when he died. quote:

And nobody's saying that all CCM stinks (well, I'm not, anyway). But you'll have a hard time justifying people like Matthew West, Big Daddy Weave, Aaron Shust, and yes I'll even dare to say Jeremy Camp being played as much as they are. None of them rise above mediocre. Casting Crowns, SCC, MWS, Chris Tomlin, and Mercy Me are all talented musicians that know how to write and perform. In Tomlin's case, family safe radio got one right, because that man is just flat out good.

I enjoy the stuff that was CCM when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's. My mom had a huge collection of Christian records: hundreds of them. I love the Christian Classics channel on CWPlus

BlackCapnHarlock I don't enjoy cookie cutter music that much at all. I enjoy some songs from The Newsboys but MXPX and Relient K do it musically for me. I think Christian music as a whole is suffering from the void left by SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER. Without Matt Slocum telling it like it is, I feel we are missing that human aspect and mortality which are important in submission to JESUS the CHRIST. Hey CapnHarlock: Saw this today on tvulive.com quote:
Sixpence None The Richer is back and they are ready to release their first ever Christmas album. It is called The Dawn Of Grace and it will be in stores on October 14th. In anticipation of the album, you can download their song Angels We Have Heard On High. They will also be heading into the studio to work on a new album which is set to be released sometime in 2009. See Notes on tvulive.com here EDIT- Looked up the sixpence myspace page... More Here

I put him in this catagory simply because most people connect him with typical CCM, but I do agree that he was very one of a kind and irreplaceable.

I was blessed to see Rich Mullins play live--when I was five! I even got to shake his hand (but I was very shy at the time, of course). The one thing I really regret about that concert is I wish I had been older so I could remember it better! I'll never forget it though, that's for sure. Yes, I agree some songs get played way too much...but for our station it's mostly the Casting Crowns and Jeremy Camp that get played way too often. Hey Amy, I'll trade for "Rebirthing" by Skillet! I love that song, he he.

CCM follows exactly what the "secular" radio stations do. Play the same 10-15 songs. That is one of the main reasons I have stopped listening to radio stations, they simply burn out a song. As for "cookie cutter" everyone looks for the hottest trends, Christian or none. The bottom line what is going to sell. Being a dj before at a radio station, companies send you the latest singles and the bosses tell you to play them a lot. There are some good ccm artist, I think people get annoyed because they are over played.

BTW, when Rich Mullins first album came out, he was pretty much cookie cutter CCM of the time, but by the time Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth came out, he was sounding a bit more unique then. quote:

About the only music I listen to that's close to being "cookie cutter" is Kutless or Michael W. Smith.
