JonCo54 -> AMD's New Card Supports Linux From the Get-Go (6/20/2008 5:30:09 PM)

"Back in September AMD had announced a new ATI Linux driver as well as opening up their GPU specifications, and today they have taken an additional step to better support the Linux OS. With the just-announced Radeon HD 4850 RV770 they have provided same-day Linux support, and the Linux driver is now shipping alongside the Windows driver on their product CDs. In addition, they are encouraging their AIB partners to showcase Tux on the product packaging as a sign of Linux support. Last but certainly not least, AMD is committed from top-to-bottom product support on Linux and they will be introducing high-end features in their Linux driver such as MultiGPU CrossFire technology. Phoronix has a run-down on AMD's evolutionary leap in Linux support along with information on the open-source support for the RV770 GPU." Link http://tech.slashdot.org/tech/08/06/19/2113242.shtml

They're doing well, but we'll need to see how soon the open source drivers pan out. A binary-only driver does NOT count as proper "Linux support." For that, there needs to be an open source driver integrated into the mainline kernel.

ATI Radeon HD 4850 Linux Performance.

Linux drivers are shipping on the product CDs, and there is same-day support for the Radeon HD 4850/4870 on Linux with fglrx 8.50 / Catalyst 8.6. In fact, the support has been available before the graphics cards officially launched. Here is the link for the review.

I just bought a Sapphire ATI 2600 Pro with 512 megs of memory. Installed PCLinuxOS 2008 minime and it found the drivers for the card. These drivers are in the kernel so no driver installation was required.

That's cool. Now, to verify that it really used the open source drivers, please go to a command line and tell me the output of:

cat /proc/sys/kernel/tainted

and also this:

glxinfo | grep direct

I'm not a command line person. So how do you tell if the hardware is detected correctly. In PCLinuxOS there is the Control Center where everything is or can be configured. If I need to find out what hardware is installed I click on the "hardware configure" icon and it will find all of the hardware that is installed and I can tweak any settings from there. You cam also choose to install the proprietary driver if need be.

BTW I'm posting this from PCLos with the new VC installed. It is a nice card. I'm more than Happy with it.

Here is a link to my webshots. These are screenshots of the PCLinuxOS Control Center and my customized desktop.

Hmm, don't you know how to get to a command line? Should be in Accessories or System Tools or something and called Terminal or Shell.

Looks like you don't have 3D acceleration. The output of those commands would confirm everything though.

I won't have 3D acceleration unless I I decide to install the driver from the PCLos repositories. Here is another interesting article.

The Truth About ATI/AMD & Linux, a very interesting read. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=735&num=1
