Okay. I am opening this thread just to vent a little. Anyone else who needs to also, feel free.
I am pretty darn tired of every single issue having such an extreme political aspect attached to it. It seems to have destroyed the concept of rational debate. It has turned everyone into something similar to players on rival sports teams, one team blue the other red.

I mean, tell me what there is to talk about nowadays that doesn't have the possibility of striking up a fierce political debate? You can't talk about war. You can't talk about the president, VP, or even past presidents. You can't discuss marriage, children, or school. You can't talk about the price of gas, and don't dare utter the words "profit margins". You can't acknowledge diversity, it becomes either racism or sexism. You really ought not to bring up Israel unless you've got time to argue. You can,t talk about taxes, spending or saving. Not insurance, hospitals or banks.

And now, to top it all off, you can't even rely on the simple question "how's the weather?".

Anyway, as my PC reminder, this is certainly not aimed at anyone here on this forum. It is simply a generalized venting of frustration. Maybe I've just had a bad day.

Sophie, I agree with you. I also get frustrated by the amount of political labelling which goes on around here, particularly the labels of 'conservative' and 'liberal'.

On a serious note, this, I think, our politicians dividing us. It's a divide and conquer scenerio. Conspiracy I know but that is how I feel about the whole thing

Yeah, I know the divide and conquer tactic. Well I think it's that too. It just aggravates me!
Especially when I catch myself doing the same thing! [:@]

It's just that it seems it's come down to treating people one way or another depending on who they are voting for. It really is silly if you think about it.

I think that 90% of debates on this forum tend to work out in following manner, and most of us (including myself) are responsible for it:

-Person A makes a comment about subject XYZ.
-Person B (a known Conservative or Liberal) makes a comment about XYZ, but accidentally slips in something political that he/she didn't read as political.
-Person C (of the opposite political views) believes that Party B has turned this into a political debate and responds.
-Person B responds.
-Person C responds.
-Person D shows up and starts screaming incessantly about politicians STU who are (liberals or conservatives) are doing PID, which is worse than what the Nazis, Commies, and Romans all did combined, and therefore, this debate is moot.
-Person E is a little taken aback and then decides this comment is actually pretty comical in an Alice Cooper sort of way. He then decides to parody Person D's comments.

I find myself playing Person B, C, and E a whole lot. I am working on getting better.

This would be an example of you being a Person B and me being a Person C for reading this on your site:

Perhaps the best way to phrase things- if you don't want to start a political fight- may be this way:

So perhaps the best way to avoid political debates is that when we include clauses that use attack words IE: (, who supports murder) (, who lied his way into a war) (, who supports the same immorality he engages in) (, who brought the US to a new low), we should carefully consider whether people with different political views will see this as the start of a political discussion.

This is something that I continue to work on with my own writing.

[:D] Yes this does seem to be just how it goes! And I think I am probably B, C, and E also!

I have actually even spent time reading through threads so I could find something I AGREE with with certain people because it was seeming like we disagreed a lot and I felt bad for some of my shotty comments! [sm=hammerhead.gif]

Here and on other forums it is better if people didn't pick fights with the words.

On personal blogs, I think it is okay if it doesn't get into name calling.

But my favorite is when you throw something out there that is obviously just sarcastic and a joke at the topic, and before you know it you are being credited with those words as if they are your heartfelt beliefs!

But then again, I need to learn to just ignore it, and I guess even by making the joke in the first place I realize when I do it it's probably going to cause trouble somewhere. *Sigh*

I think you can have a rational debate, but they often get derailed by the obnoxious. This happens on every forum I have ever been on and tends to get worse around election time. IMO, the best you can do is ignore the rants and try to focus on the comments by people that are interested in having a rational discussion.

I also think the flip side on this is that we are at a unique time in history. One that has everyone concerned about the future of the United States and even the world. Those with nuclear capacities, price of oil, corn all of the political subjects that get argued/discussed are rather large proportional to our daily lives. Everyone seems to have a remedy on what should be done, how they would do it or why the support "X" and everyone, including myself, seems to want to be on top of every scenerio. I also catch myself surfing the forums for comments that I've made just to see if someone else has said something disparaging about what I said so that I can respond in some sort of smarty pants kinda way just to have some fun. That is what I should cease doing.....




BUT I CAN'T, it's too much fun!

Yeah, I totally understand this aspect of it too. And I think a good many times it's just that whoever is doing the arguing is doing it because they really do believe they are right on the issue and want everyone else to "understand the truth".

And you? Smarty pants replies? No, you're kidding! [:D]
