From Wikipedia:
quote:

There have been a number of controversies surrounding Zondervan in recent years. In 1988, Zondervan became a division of Harper Collins Publishers, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation. This meant that the firm now belongs to an organization that also publishes non-Christian books. The new TNIV was opposed by some Christian conservatives.

Zondervan, publishers of many Bibles and owners (?) of the NIV and TNIV are also the owners of The Sun (a tabloid which features the page 3 topless woman in each publication), sky (a satellite TV station which has severan porn channels, and Harper Collins Publishers (which, among other publications, publishes the 5atanic Bib1e).

According to these sources, Rupert Murdoch, owner of these little enterprises, is a "born-again christian" and major contributor to Rick Warren's church.

I don't usually pay any attention to this kind of "celebrity gossip," usually because I neither know such person nor care to know about their actions and I am bored with their shenigans. But I have Zondervan-published books, including at least one NIV and a TNIV in my house. But this one has me reeling.

Years ago, people were saying Zondervan was printing satanic bibles. . . This stuff is old news. . .

I don't give a hoot if it is old news to you or anyone else. Also, I did not write that Zondervan published that stupid book.

If it is old news to you, so be it. It is not old news to me.

I am sorry, 1way, but I am asking a serious question here, expecting people to give real input.

Do you notice the flip-flop? In the Wikipedia link, it says that Zondervan is a division of Harper Collins, meaning H.C. owns Zondervan.

In the "leaven" quote, it says that Zondervan owns H.C.

The Wikipedia one is correct. Zondervan doesn't have control over what its owners do (the Sun, etc.). However, H.C. hasn't really made any changes to Zondervan - it hasn't told it to print a certain type of translation, add any slant, etc.

If it bothers you that a Bible publishing company is a division of a larger, non-Christian conglomerate, then yes, that's the case. But from what I've read, H.C. is basically leaving Zondervan alone.

Corporate ownership is just reality. That doesn't mean a Zondervan book is tainted.

I skimmed the article in your top link. I'm out on Rick Warren anyway.

Buying an NIV doesn't mean you're supporting something bad because of Harper Collins. Different divisions of corporations are run completely separately. Even if they weren't, you didn't buy "The Sun", or whatever.

Perhaps I read it poorly (I am dyslexic, so it would not surprise me), but I read that Murdock owns the companies. I am disturbed by KNOWINGLY giving money to such persons. I just ran into this garbage, so I am still thinking about it, regarding my response to it.

There are Christian organizations out there which seem to spend all their time pointing out other Christians, and proclaiming them to be not really Christians after all. The accused Christians range from Rick Warren, to Billy Graham, to Chuck Swindoll, and on and on. And, sad to say, they also will occasionally distort the truth in doing so.

If you buy an NIV or TNIV, Zondervan does not get the money from the royalties, the International Bible Society does. And, they use that money to fund missionaries who work translating the Bible for language groups which still do not have the word of God in their language.

What does Zondervan do with their money? You'd have to check their website to see if they give that information.

I don't know what to tell you. I know I don't trust those websites that continually point out that you should not trust this or that prominent Christian, especially since when I have tried to substantiate their information, I have found that they are not always entirely truthful. As I understand it, Rupert Murdoch is a business man who bought Zondervan when it was struggling, to keep it going. What his motives are, I don't know. Is he a Christian? I don't know. I guess you'd have to take this issue to God in prayer and ask for His guidance.

I wonder if this passage applies:

quote:

Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel, so that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else, and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear. Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will; the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice. Phillipians 1:12-18

If you wish to purchase a bible from another publisher then do so. As my first college bible professor told me, The best translation is your own translation. That is if you are concerned about the publishers/translators then learn the languages and find copies of source documents. Also, if you have to depend on others, trust those that you can come closest to personally verifying.
