Back in the day:

* there was a sign at the front of the church that had the hymn numbers on it.
* We did not know the focal bible passage or sermon "title" until the pastor announced them.
* Mrs. Somebody having a party gave out invitations after church
* all church functions were announced in one, or all of 5 ways
1) during Sunday school opening assembly
2) during Sunday school
3) from the pulpit Sunday morning/night
4) from the pulpit Wednesday night
5) church calendar and clearly posted in the church so you had no excuses.
*We all kept up our own prayer lists... IF we wanted to keep a written record.

I guess that pretty much tells how I feel about the bulletin. I was more or less indifferent about it until I got tasked with the job while we found another person to pay to do the job. Now I know what is involved and how many go in the can without ever being read and I think it is a total waste of time and resources.

What do you think? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

If there are thousands that go in the trash, but one hurting person looks and sees there is a Divorce Care group, or something like that, in the bulletin, and goes to that and life's changed. . .

totally worth it.

I used to do the church bulletin.

good grief!

No one appreciated it, anal retentive pastors want perfection, and people want personal announcements put in.

Plus, someone stands up and READS THE bulletin each Sunday morning service. Why????

Oh, and someone always complains about the font size, the color paper, or some such goo as that.

NOT TO MENTION: We also had a weekly email bulletin, and email prayer chain.

Good to have a church bulletin, that way I know what is going on.

I, for one, find the bulletins to be helpful reminders of events, and I also like the outline of services. It makes me happy knowing what is coming.

Sometimes other duties keep me from hearing information when it is given and sometimes so much is given out verbally that I forget a lot.

I appreciate people like ezri and bluestone who put together bulletins for folk like me. THANK YOU!

One thing I can use mine for is to get a 10percent discount where I eat after church. All I have to do is take my bulletin into the resturant on Sunday after church. I to do tend to forget times if I don't see it written down so yes I like the bulletian.

I never noticed that, but now that you mention it, they all did seem to have Psalms 23 printed on them.

I tell ya...those things are priceless!

An evangelist I know with more than 30 years of doing revivals & evangelistic crusades told me that those fans cause your body to produce more heat than they fan away. His suggestion was sit near people fanning and, therefore, doing all the extra sweating for ya.

I know, right? But if you use a slight flick of the wrist...you don't sweat as much.

Bulletins are one of those things that probably most people wouldn't miss if they didn't have, at least until they wanted one and realized they didn't get one. Ours probably get thrown away most of the time, but they don't tell me anything I didn't already know. Every now and then I've needed to find last week's bulletin because it had the time printed for an event we were going to, or the phone number for the church, and then I either can't find it or the time was misprinted anyway.

we do the bulletin + a monthly calender that gets handed out. Seems like most of the stuff those of you here saying you'd miss can be found on the monthly calender of events which is normally not handed out every week BUT available in the foyer. So maybe that visitor that needs the divorce care meetings might not see it unless some usher with a sharp eye saw them and handed them a calender. But then that IS what the ushers used to do- keep an eye out for visitors so they could give them information on the church... and get their information in turn.

How'd folks know when stuff was 15-20 years ago??? You know before the bulletin and church sign screamed at them? Were they missing out on some magnificent programs because it wasn't spoon fed to them in a folded bit of paper that they could peruse at their leisure? No- I imagine they listened during the opening services, and Sunday school, and announcements from the pulpit and took NOTES. I am not talking Mega Church here folks- this is a rural church. Even those in ministry serving would be able to catch one of the mentioned announcements.

This was me too. I'm glad I don't do the church bulletins anymore....

adding last minute announcements, updating announcements, updating events, asking the pastor for the scripture verse, asking who is leading praise time, make sure I've got the right information for not just the bulletins but the INSERTS also...checking, double checking, triple checking for typos, make copies, manually fold bulletins and include inserts...and find out that I've made too many.

I vote no.

I think church bulletins are about as important as wearing hats.

And why hasn't anyone asked what scripture reference we go to for bulletins?

Our 'worship folder' is less about the 'order of service'(actually there's no 'order of service' listed) then about the opportunities for service in the coming week and anticipation of upcoming events.

Right after the pastor's wife said she had no idea the ladies group ministry meeting was last night. Pastor (fill-in-the-blank) said they needed some form of printed announcements as well.

My church kills a lot of trees.

There is the mass produced bullitin with all the church worship times ( 7 a week ) events, seminars and there is a place for those accepting Christ to contact the church. Its all professionally done with the sermon series "logo" on it. For example we are doing a Seekers series these last few weeks so there is a picture of Indiana Jones on the fron of the bulkltin...all excellently done.

Inside of that is the fill in the blank outline of the sermon given that week.

Sometimes they hand out printouts of special up coming events as well

Sometimes they put in those little church business cards to give out to the people you know.

Yeah...tree killers.

Oh I forgot...are they good? Well since I am in the printing busines....yeah. Someone has a job because of them. Good, good.

I like them, but I also like that the church has a recycling box when we don't need to hold on to them. A church website updated with events and activities may reduce the need- I find most info that I am seeking there.

I actually emailed a lady back today telling her that the prayer lists were already printed that her request would be in the wednesday night prayer lists. Then I reminded her that she really should put Prayer Request in the subject line as todays email subject line: "Brown Family" did not say prayer request to me when I did the initial email sweep(we did have two other emails that said Sick list and prayer in the subject line.) so it did not get opened until after all was printed.

Ooooo BAD ME I imagine that someone is gonna complain to someone that I wasn't sweet and cordial and patting them on the head in my correction but then the entire congregation knows I am a mean mommy so they ought to know that I am not gonna hold their hand and pat their heads. (don't let the cute kitty avvy fool you)

Our bulletin this week has a father's day insert, a prayer list insert, and a nominating committee insert in it. All that stuffing on top of the folding... and we print it all in house too. No recycle boxes.

I really feel for the new secy- She needs a raise before she starts. I guess the only really good thing about it all is that she is not a church member(it is against church bylaws) so she won't be around on Sundays to get an ear full if she messes it up. Though I am sure her email box will have "loving" instruction in it. Why today I had some of that in there myself... I wanted to write the LOL (That's Lil Ol Lady) back and tell her that is was nice of her to notice that such and such had not been "taken care of" and then add that I was putting it in the bulletin with HER as the contact.

See, it is a good thing I am being relieved of this job monday at 1:30pm otherwise I might be set upon by Vampiric LOLs for taking their *ahem* pointing out my shortcomings as their volunteering to take care of the issues themselves instead of sitting on their laurels and playing editor in chief after the fact.

Did Kitty bare her clawses? OOps Sorry.
