Some people come to church from work.

Some people do not work in an office.

You cannot judge a person by their cover.

I wouldn't go to Wal-Mart filthy and smelly, much less to the church. Maybe that's just my peculiar quirkiness.

Modesty is contrasted with prosperity, not sensuality:

Job 8:7 - Then, even if your beginnings were modest, your final days will be full of prosperity.

Yeah, but then we can't use that verse to angrily judge people wearing skimpy clothing. They're some of the most fun to point fingers at and call sinners.

I have. I have done this a fair amount. I can't go the ten miles home...take a shower...and then go back ten miles to get a gallon of milk.

Some of us actually get dirty at work. If there are services you want to attend...church is close to work....and home is not....I don't see why you couldn't come to church.

Ok question. I have very blue eyes, and if I wear baby blue, Many, many compliments are given. Should I never that color to church? If I do am I not being modest? Is it like the LDS and wearing red kind of thing? I am serious.

Simple, are you showing off or not?

What do the poor people in your congregation think?

Does the demographic make up of the congregation match the demographics of the community?

If not, you are sticking out one way or another and calling attention to yourself and therefore immodest.

My hair is naturally curly I can stick out no matter what I wear. With the hair that God gave me.

I declare, Lightshine and Saraimay! You two just don't get it. Wise up and frump down, for good night.

Lightshine, you are hereby commanded to wear brown at all times, and that three sizes too large. An antique potato sack will be fine, but unable to find that, you can just make something of burlap.

Saraimay, no more pastels, and have a friend iron out those curlieques in your hair, like we used to iron our hair in the '60s.

If the two of you really wanted to frump, you could do it, so stop complaining, you to gorgeous examples of womanhood!

Why don't we all stop critiquing everyone else's clothing, hair, makeup, etc. and criticizing each other for it? It's not the most important part of church life, after all. I'm going to dress for church as I feel led to dress. If others have a problem with it, that's their problem! They need to get a life.

Maybe not fun ,but Godly in the word, last I read. Abyiah I like brown, but no potatoe sacks. I really ( no vanity intended) have wondered about the color, but then I worry about everything.Do I do this? or that? is this right or wrong? I do worry over these kind of things.

I had to wear shorts, a t-shirt and flip flops to church today. It happened that they had a lot of visitors who were dressed up. No one said or did anything to make me feel uncomfortable, but I felt out of place anyway.

Ya gotta quit worrying about every little thing. Do what the Good Lord leads you to do. If people can't accept that, it is they who have the problem. You can't please everyone all the time. Your first responsibility is to God. Secondly to your husband. Next come your children and the rest of your family. All the rest of us should be way down your priority list. At least that's the way I see it.

Dave and Abyiah, true. I was really trying to get at pleasing God. I am strange, it is not out of fear, but I always want to please him. It is kind of like VBS this year. I am so worn out. I would go to work early, leave early come home shower again, work VBS until 9:30, including clean-up, go back into work and work until almost 1am. Keep things running in my family, plus doing a gaurdianship with a mentally challenged child (long story) cooking for parents after work. This is not bragging, or whining, I feel confused, because I really, really, want to please the Lord. They had a picture on the website with VBS pictures, someone told my husband today, I looked so thin, it looked like I was going to blow away. Not even mentioning the suitcases under my eyes. I was curious and looked at it, and it is the worst picture I have ever taken (LOL). So it goes with the dress thing. I could care a rip less what anyone else wears, infact, two of the most wonderful ladies from a different church, and I talked about it ( they helped us with crafts) they wear shorts, jeans flip flops, casual every Sunday. I told them what I wear and they laughed, and we agreed what ever floats someones boat. Thre baby blue color may seem silly, vain, ignorant, to some, but yes, I have been concerned, not fretful though, that I was drawing attention to myself, and I get very embaressed if someone says something, and they do. I know everyone is thinking what a vain woman. Which is far from the truth, I have low self-worth, if not careful. Ok this is strange this whole post, I am so tired so excuse me. I carried a sign aroung by accident in Bath and Body works store that said two for ten dollars, until they took it from me. I thought I was carrying something else. MY DD ask if I had been tested for Alzheimers. I am babbling, so I will leave with this, it was kids Sunday, I wore the VBS T-Shirt ( Brown) and hot pink shorts- sort of capri things, but above knees, hot pink flats. Though I had matching jewelry. No hose though, so it was all good. PS. I will regret this post when my mind returns, so read it quickly before tommorow, and I deleate it. (LOL)

Lightshine, we weren't criticizing you. You just go on being the you G-d created, and that will be enough for us, because it is perfect for your Creator. You know that.

I have been in churches who made you wear certain clothing. I could never feel free there. I felt that I could never be good enough for God to accept me. I ended up quiting the church. I didn't go for over 10 years. God showed me something, for I didn't quit Him, He chose His desciples as they were, they didn't have to change their clothes or do anything special to please Him. He took them as they were. I believe the Holy Spirit that comes into our life at the time of salvation, will lead us in these things. If you are wearing something displeasing to God, the Spirit will let you know. I know this from experience, a little uneasy feeling saying this is too short, or this is cut to low. God will let you know. And for the ones that don't have salvation, they need to be there no matter what they're wearing.

Okay, I admit fully that while I have read most of this thread, I have not read it all, and this response is primarily to a post early on that seemed to imply that Americans should dress any which way because people in the Third World can't affrod to "dress up" for church.

Here are Haitans on their way into a church service:

Note that the choir is dressed in discarded American graduations robes--you talk about uncomfortable!

Here are Haitians going about their day-to-day lives at market:

So, saying I will wear whatever I feel like out of sympathy for my Third World brethren is hooey.

I'm just sayin'.

The West is spoiled and does not like anything that pulls us out of our comfort zones. I am not saying it is required to dress up for church, but just bear in mind that our Third World brethren recognize that going to church is different than just running out for plantains...

I also went to a church that had many Kenyans who were members. They invariably showed up in three-piece suits. (I can't remember the last time I saw an American in a three-piece suit--especially not at that particular church, so they were not trying to "fit in.")

Do not use the Third World poor as a reference point for how you dress.
