Another reason:

Fear of being stalked by a harassing user from one forum to another. I had this happen elsewhere. Less information given, less chance of someone putting two and two together.

They must be getting stopped by my spam blocker. I'm not getting them. Now I'm feeling left out.

I believe hiding an e-mail is WISDOM and Prudence and there is nothing wrong with that. There are so many people who on this website and being Christian website does not guarantee that all are angels and brimming with spirituality.

It is better to be wise and cautious and hide their e-mail than naive and that is Very Biblical!

I was getting unsolicited email sermons from "AL Finch". After requesting EIGHT times that he remove my name from his list, I finally threatened to contact His Internet service provider, as well as the administration here, and let them know he was spamming.

the emails stopped at that poin.

Is that what those emails are???? I thought I had signed up for something and completely forgot about it!!!

yep. and there were in black and white. If you can't make your spam pretty, don't bother! I suppose the person thought I needed them.

*snigger* I even have a folder set up for those emails. I've never read them though. LOLOL!!! Boy am I a blonde. *giggle*

My public email addy is a web based one. My private one is reserved for those who I either believe will not spam me.

I hide most of my information. I tend to be arrogant, but I am only antagonistic to people who are too far down the intellectual scale to have a real discussion.

BTW, I only hide information because people hate me. I can't help being beautiful, but that doesn't matter to others.

Personally, I think that if you reveal too much, then you are judged on worldly terms. If someone really needs to judge, then base it on the words written in a post, not some preconcieved notion that you get after reading someones personal info. Do you really need to know if a poster is male, female, old, young, tall, short etc? What about black or white?
What will it change about your opinion of someones post? Are people just looking for an excuse to not like someone?

I am public about my info to a slighty risky point.

However, it helps that I am clear that my politics include a strong belief in the second amendment, and defense of house and home is not an abridgement of my theology.

But that's the point. Based on the just the post some people must be arrogant jerks. If there's some info in their profile at least you can look and see if there's the possibility that you're reading them wrong or something.

Frankly, I'd much rather have someone look at my profile and try to see where I'm coming from than judge me on one post. That's why I have some info in there.

Today my label is "Dry Clean Only."

I don't really feel the need to expose a whole lot in my profile--although my age is there, so deal with it--here comes a power surge!

I think we tend to feel safe and isolated in forums (not just this one), and fail to recognize that anyone in the world can read the stuff. Not exactly wise to put a whole lot on there

But I do understand what the OP means about some particularly virulent posters who have no information at all in their profiles.

I hide my email. I get enough PMs from users calling me names, and at least here I can deal with them. Bye bye! If I received an email I'd not know who it was. I seriously just don't want to deal with that.

and I really get enough spam, I don't need more. I don't need viagra, thank you very much. and I don't care that you are some Nigerian princess who just needs a few thousand dollars to reclaim whatever it is you need to claim. And I'm sorry if you can't make your house payment but I can't help you.

So no, I do not put my personal email on my profile. I won't put my last name up either.

and yes, I do wonder about members who keep their profile private, I'm not talking about leaving it blank but not allowing it to be viewed at all. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, they do have that option under the rules, but I can understand if someone wants to click on it to find older posts to see who they are dealing with.

Another thing:

People can put anything in those information blocks, and none of it is true.
That way the person on mental disability become a lawyer, the lawyer becomes a scientist, etc.

The dead beat dad who has dumped his wife and kids for a new wife and kids can become a defender of morality and "putting women in their place"

Anyone you like!

But if you are a rich widow from Africa I will *not* talk to you anymore. I have had enough of them to last several lifetimes

This is one reason I rarely post in singles, or many of the personal threads. I just don't think most people are honest about their lives.

You can tell me you live in a Mansion in Miami, when in fact you are posting on your laptop from your outhouse in Peru.

How intriguing! Let's skip the indoor plumbing and get a laptop, Pa!

I'm so idiotically naive, that thought never occurred to me.

BTW, I really like those "putting women in their place" guys. They're fun to watch.
