Story of Isaac
[for Roshashana]
by Leonard Cohen

The door it opened slowly
'My father he came in
I was nine years old.
And he stood so tall above me
blue eyes they were shining
And his voice was very cold.

Said, "I've had a vision,
And you know I'm strong and holy,
I must do what I've been told."
So he started up the mountain
I was running, he was walking
And his axe was made of gold.

The trees they got much smaller,
The lake a lady's mirror
We stopped to drink some wine.
And he threw the bottle over
Broke a minute later
And he put his hand on mine.

Thought I saw an eagle
but it might have been a vulture
I never could decide.
My father built an altar
He looked once behind his shoulder
He knew I would not hide

You who build the altars now
To sacrifice these children
Must not do it any more.
A scheme is not a vision
And you never have been tempted
By a demon or a god.

You who stand above them now
Your hatchets blunt and bloody
You were not there before
When I lay upon the altar
And my Father's hand was trembling
With the beauty of the Word.

You who call me brother now
Forgive me if I inquire
Just according to whose plan.
When it all comes down to dust
I will kill you if I must
or help you if I can.

When it all comes down to dust
I will help you if I must,
kill you if I can.
Mercy on our uniform
Man of peace, man of war,
The peacock spreads his fan.

2 things:

#1) Your post is a violation of TOS. It is a copyright violation, and therefore illegal, to post the entire lyrics of a song. You can post a verse and then link to the rest.

#2) What's the purpose of this thread?

When I read this story in Bible, I became very interested in this song, and just want to record and share it here. ( Actually I had a question about this story, but forget it now.)
the link is : http://www.spinninglobe.net/isaac.htm
Thanks for reminding.

I have no idea about this TOS, I am not from the States. I am wondering if the moderator can help me with getting rid of the extra lyric.
Thank you.

The question earlier was :Genesis 9:6 "whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man." Then in Genesis God tested Abraham by ordering him to sacrifice his son, who is a big gift from God, and Abraham, as a close friend of God must know very well about what God said about killing. How did he distuiguish God's will between these two orders and take action?

When a boy was almost killed by his father like this, he must be very sad, I believe Issac must also have learnt a good lesson. People's love is alway limited and disappointed, that is why we need God and should love Him better; He will send us healing and comfort.

Later I also read about Rebekah, she was really a good girl at first, but it was a pity that she loved her son Jacob better than Isaac, because she prompted the son decieve his father, Poor Isaac! [:o]Maybe she felt unhappy and unprotected when she had to tell Abimelech and his people she was only her husband's sister[:D]

I'd like to tell a testimony today:
last night I felt unpeaceful when I listened to some songs by a singer from Tibet, I knew she also sung some buddhist songs, but I did not stop listenning .
As a result, I was frightened to wake by bad dreams in the midnight and got up in the 4:00am. I had no choice but openned my computer again and got rid of these Tibetan songs. Additionally, I went to the website where these songs are introduced and posted some gospel masseages there.
We must be very careful when we choose the music to listen, sometimes they can be the enemies' attack in a beautiful disguise.

"If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed.But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands, and last night he rebuked you." Genesis 31:35

These verses hit me when I read today. Yes, people in this world, even those in our family could mistreat us out of selfishness and greed, but God knows and helps us. How pityful those who do not know this God are! Their life must be very lonely and hurtful to some extent that they maynot even realize it.
