I've never been asked to show an ID either. But of course most of the poll workers have been to my home. 
Also in my area I-9's were unheard of a little over 10 years ago. Now we all know what an I-9 is.
Times change.

An I-9 is an employment eligibility verification form
It is required by both the Dept of Immigration and now Dept of Homeland Security
All employers (no matter how big or small) must verify both an employee’s eligibility to work and their identity. An I-9 is the form you must have your employees fill out before you can hire them. The employer must require that they want to be employee show you certain documents. The employer is going to be held legally responsible for gathering that information and keeping those records.
Me as an employer must to the best of my ability be sure the person working for me is who he says he is and is able to work in this country legally.

You may not have filled one out. The act was passed in the mid 1980's but it appears that very few employers complied or even knew about the act.
Not until the influx of illegals and foreign workers came to our area did we learn about the I-9. (until then I had never been asked to fill our one myself.....none of the other business people in my area that I contacted about this had heard of them either so they didn't have those forms on file)

A few weeks ago, I had my wallet lifted at the health club. Went to the local SS office to file for a new card and was turned down. The reason; I was born in Mexico City fifty-two years ago and I had to prove that I am an American citizen. Fortunately, I have the needed paperwork

Thanx for the info. I haven't been in a supervisory capacity in a few years. When I was, I worked for a company that subcontracted aerospace programs for NASA, GE, Martin Marietta, Lockheed, etc. All personnel paperwork was handled by the personnel dep't., so I probably wouldn't have seen the forms anyway, but aI'm sure the personnel dep't. did. Every item was scrutinized, i's dotted, t's crossed, etc.

Unless you haven't changed jobs in the last 25+ years, you should have signed an I-9 form upon hire. The paperwork is not complete if your John Hancock is not on it. But hey, sometimes there is so much paperwork at hire, that employees don't remember it all.
I have been requiring I-9's since the early 90s when I first became an employer, and my parents started complying with it in their businesses when it first passed. There's no excuse for employers failing to do this. Bottomline: The onus is on an employer to keep up with the law.
