Just scan the one-stop threads! I see pages of "this is clearly what the verse means" and "no, this is clearly what the verse means" disagreement going on all the time. Same verse, two differant honest outlooks on what God intended it to mean. Most likely both sides are somewhat right and somewhat wrong. In fact, Jesus Himself got the religious rulers bent out of shape by often telling them, "No guys, this is what it means" after they spent years studying them.
I agree that the christain liberty fire-insurance outlook is short sighted and selfish, but don't be so quick to think folks are making excuses for pet sins. That is not always the case. They honestly believe they are in right standing with God, just not with other humans who want them to walk the same path they are.
