Yours,

I watched the video. He made many points similar to this thread. Interesting!

I don't know that 501 c3 status necessarily brought all of that on, but we definitely have a predominant consumer mentality.

What I find even more disturbing is when church leadership encourages a consumer mentality by polling the people to find out what they (the leadership) should be doing to make church "better". There are numerous times in the OT where polling the people and doing what they want really didn't end with good results.

quote:

But there's hope. The Lord is alive and well, and even if there are "shopping malls for the religion of consumerism," I can still be salt and light. I can still spread the Gospel and live out my belief in the Lord and His good news.

I have great hope. I think these divisions we are seeing are very good, actually, because they help us study and gain discernment. I recently posted about this in another thread--the more some churches go away from scripture, the more other believers yearn for biblical faith.

1 Cor 11:19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval.

But really, there is nothing new under the sun. Often what we are seeing are the same problems people throughout history have faced, just with different packaging.

Oh, it's absolutely not new. LOL!

What's funny to me is the people who say they want to get real, want to really serve the Lord and be with the Lord, but when things get tough (and I'm not talking about church attendance), those people are nowhere to be found. I usually don't listen to someone when they start talking that way. I shut down a bit, because it's just talk, and I don't want to get down on them in my heart for just talking, talking and always talking and nothing else.

But then here I am on this site always talking.

I'm really not as down on people as I sound, but I am not very patient with Christians who only talk or only listen to talk -- even if it's well intentioned Bible study. This is probably the chief thing that soured me on the traditional church years ago was this incessant talking and receiving talking but seldom or ever acting on it. Oh, of course people were involved in church programs like Tuesday night visitation. But again, that's only talking, always talking. That seems to be what a lot of "church" is about.

When does the rubber ever meet the road?

You reminded me of this:
Washed By The Water
The Heat
by NEEDTOBREATHE

...Daddy was a preacher
She was his wife
Just tryin to make the world a little better
You know, shine a light
People started talking
Trying to hear their own voice
Those people tried to accuse my father
Said he made the wrong choice
Though it might be painful
You know that time will always tell
Those people have long since gone
My father never failed...

I believe that an idol is an idol. I don't think I ought to go around accusing abstract ideas, common household objects and buildings in the community of instigating idolatry. If it's an idol, it's probably an idol. If it's a church, it's probably a church. Let's not over-complicate this issue.
